In Capitalism: A Love Story- Michael Moore sheds light on the capitalist system that has caused much of society’s problems. This documentary emphasizes how the capitalist system has benefited only the top one percent by further concentrating their wealth at the expense of the working class. In order to explain how the capitalist system operates, Moore examines how politicians are bought by corporations, homes are repossessed, and how families are exploited by peasant’s insurance and private ‘for-profit’ prisons. The documentary begins with Moore explaining the decline of the Roman empire.

Henslin explains in chapter eleven that in the United states the capitalism that we have is state or welfare capitalism (Henslin, 2015). There is know such thing as a whole country being capitalists. Therefore, state capitalism means “private citizens own the means of production and pursue profits, but they do so within a vast system of laws designed to patent the welfare of the population, and not incidentally ensures that the government can collect taxes.” Moore’s documentary explains why capitalism is hurting our country in so many different ways. But big CEOs and business owners do not want to hear what the middle class people have to say because it is the big companies like that, that are taking everyones money and work.

The movie gave many description of Capitalism. It ranged from good remarks like “system of taking and giving” to criticism like how it is a “system of taking and giving, but mostly taking.” Based on what is shown in the movie, the second description would be more believable. The “successful” people shown in the movie took advantage of others’ misfortune. For example, the loan companies who bankrupt the poor people even more. The loan companies let people borrow more money with high interest rates, knowing that they would most likely not be able to pay it back, but in return the companies take everything they have. There is a family in the movie that owned a house for so many years, and the bank was able to take it from them for not being able to pay what they owe. Thankfully, the bank was “generous” enough to offer them money in exchange of cleaning out their house. Is that really the right thing to do? Another infuriating part of the movie is when another family became homeless and was forced to live in a truck. What happened to the “highest standard of living in the world” that they America promised? Is living a truck a luxurious thing now?

A) There is a very big gap between the poor and the rich. The middle class is shrinking and now looking more and more like the poor. In the first video they asked 5,000 Americans how they think wealth is distributed in the United States. Of these Americans 92% of them believed that wealth should be equally distributed across the board. The bottom 40% of Americans barely have any of the nation’s wealth and the top 1% have more wealth than people believe the top 20% combined should have. Most of the nation has only 7% of the wealth. An average worker would have to work for a whole month to make what a CEO makes in an hour. Many people at the top end of the wealth have the power to decrease the inequality, but they won’t because that would mean they make a lot less money, and they only care about themselves. America needs to change the distribution of wealth or we will go under as a nation. What happened to equal opportunity for all?

A cancer cell known today is a destructive living organism that duplicates itself by feeding off the energy of a corpse. Similarly, a country that promotes capitalism enables businesses to gain wealth at the expense of the consumer’s wealth. Ultimately this becomes a question of morality as these corporations reap the money from hardworking citizens for the purpose of greed and exploitation of the free market economy. In the film, Capitalism: A love story, the film makers use conventions and point of view to show that capitalism in America is an evil that is better replaced by democracy. Michael Moore warns everyone that promoting capitalism will destroy the economy because of the financial sacrifices made by citizens for free enterprise

As stated in the article, “To work for change, we need to know where to stand” and that should began with the fight against unnecessary consumption. Capitalism, needs to be confronted, and we need to understand the forms of oppression that comes along with it. Our focus should not be on things and objects, but on people. Capitalism is risking our plant for all of us. This system is based on control and power, and it is willing to do anything to maintain it, even at the expense of lives, because any change in a positive direction would reduce their profits, therefore it’s important to keep people oppressed and disunited.

In this system, individuals and companies own and direct most of the resources used to produce goods and services, including land and other natural resources labor, and “capital”. “Capital” includes factories and equipment and sometimes the money used in businesses (Friedman, 5).
