According to Merriam-Webster, ethics is defined as an area of study that deals with ideas about what is good and bad behavior. Some would argue that definition is rather vague. A more complete understanding of ethics would suggest that it is more than just an area of study but rather a way of life; moral principles that govern a person's or group's behavior. If one is ethical and has good moral standards, it is usually seen in that person. Simply put, ethics could be considered the standards of behavior as to which society accepts.

What are ethics? Why is it important? Ethics can be defined as “the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation; or “a set of moral principles (Merriam-Webster, 2017)”. The reason ethics is important is because it gives us a basic understanding the difference between concepts and situations that are considered right or wrong. We as humans have learned a set of values and beliefs that tell us what is considered right and wrong, there are times when situations change and the standard of ethics changes, but generally it goes according to our beliefs and what society considers to be right and wrong.

Ethics refers to a system of moral standards that guide the decision for human conduct of what is right and wrong based on everyday life situations, usually in terms rights, obligations, benefits, fairness, or virtue. Ethics is used as a formal guideline for conducting business in order to minimize pain to the greater number of people as a whole. It tells us how we ought to think and behave toward one another considering first, how we want to be treated. Ethics is what differentiate human beings from animals, those who have got ethics in them and find it as an avoidable tool in life. Such people interact in a friendly way. They know what they are expected to do in the best way possible. For example, ethics teaches one that killing is wrong. If one were to find pleasure in killing, that person would be considered to have bad ethics. Nevertheless, ethics involves positive deeds alike.

Because this world is inhabited by multitudes of people with diverse experiences as well as different sets of customs and beliefs, determining what is truly right from what is truly wrong can prove to be an impossible feat. It is principally for this reason that the study of ethics is important not only for students, but any person whom considers themselves a part of humanity. Andrew Fiala and Barbara MacKinnon assert that “if we are to make progress understanding each other…then we have to understand why we think certain things are right and other things are wrong”

Ethics are moral principles or values that govern the conduct of an individual or a group.It is not a burden to bear, but a prudent and effective guide which furthers life and success. Ethics are important not only in business but in academics and society as well because it is an essential part of the foundation on which a civilized society is built.

“Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do.” I believe that you can teach the basics of ethics in a classroom, but you can only learn to have good ethics through personal experiences. Classrooms do not provide an atmosphere to really change a person’s way of thinking. Ethics is changing your way of thinking and only real experiences can do that for us. When you are young you do not have a major concept of what is right and what’s is wrong.

What does education mean if ethics is sacrificed for academic gains? As Aristotle once said, “educating the mind without the heart is no education at all”. Not to mention, ethics is the key in shaping moral identities in people, especially students. This essay examines the importance of teaching ethics to students and the challenges that come with it. Educating students on ethics can minimize academic misconducts, guide students to become self-reliant in decision-making and attain wisdom. Yet, less experienced teachers, ignorance towards the importance of ethics and the increasing pressure on teachers regarding students’ academic standards have become inevitable challenges in the implementation of ethics in education.

Ethics is defined as moral principles of conduct, which people usually agree with. Unlike in law there is no punishment involved in ethical values, if you don't follow according with the standards. There are many things that influence ethical behaviour. These can be personal reflection, religious beliefs, culture, experiences and family influences. If broadly speaking, ethics is the science or study of the morality of how humans act through the medium of natural reason.

Ethics is best described as a system of moral values that is followed by human beings. In this chapter, I found myself connecting with Mo Tzu’s statement about Universal Love. His statement followed his principle that everyone should have access to peace, food, and clothes. Food and clothes, I believe, are two basic needs that a human being needs on a daily basis. As for peace, I believe that it is something that all human being should have to feel in their life and strive for. This is something that I can definitely relate to because my family and I are constantly involved in making other lives better when things are rough for them. I was taught at a young age that not every one on this planet was as fortunate as I was, and I will forever be thankful for my parents for teaching me this
