Introduction
Cameroon is in central Africa, between Guinea and Nigeria, sometimes even called the “hinge of Africa” due to its volcanic activity. Its area in comparison to California is only slightly larger- about 475,000 sq km, which makes this a relatively small country. In terms of boundaries, it has about six countries that border it: the Central African Republic, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Nigeria. Its terrain is relatively plain, with its coastal plain in the southwest, the dissected plateau near the center, some high mountains westward, and north it has plains.

This was a time of prosperity for Cameroon, as they began to create a stronger community with the uniting of the Southern Cameroons to become the Federal Republic of Cameroon in 1961. In 2000, the issue rises as the country was given funding for pipeline projects whilst having criticism from human rights activists, as well as the Roman Catholic Church in Cameroon states that corruption has intruded into all levels of their society. Subsequent events then follow such as the realization that 80% of the country’s forests have been removed, tension because of the country’s English inhabitants, and claims of fraud and vote-rigging at their parliamentary and municipal elections in 2002.
Moving on to recent history, the times have changed, as their constitution was finally amended in 2008, allowing their then-President Biya to run a third term in office. It was then that Cameroon started to come to agreements with other surrounding countries on more occasions, such as the alliance with Nigeria to protect their land and sea border from attacks by pirates or the Chinese loan for a deep sea port in 2011.
After a brief period of no serious transgressions, the Boko Haram incursions start to surface, which sparks tension with northern Nigeria, and fear starts to spread. The lives of the people in the Southwest Asia and North Africa region has changed drastically in the last century. With improved health care and high birthrate, the region’s population has grown rapidly. Making one-third of the population in most countries under the age of fifteen. A large number of people of the region have moved to urban areas. This change in the lives of the people have made it difficult for them to maintain their cultural values as technological advances continue. Religion is an important part of the lives of the people in the region. Many religions have emerged in the Southwest Asia and North Africa region. On January 17th 1961 the former Congolese Prime minister, Patrice Lumumba was assassinated. According to document A “Belgians supported a 30-year timetable to prepare them for independence. Distrusting the Belgians, African nationalists demanded immediate self-government.” After the announcement of the Belgians leaving some citizens wanted this to come much faster, so Belgium said they would give full control within the year. In the following year Lumumba was assassinated by an unknown killed. Due Lumumba's decisions chaos grew in the country and the hatred of the Congo grew to the Belgium and their allies. Lumumba was assassinated for multiple reasons but the largest cause was that he opposed popular opinion and made very powerful people upset with his erratic decisions and accusations.
The Togolese Republic is a country on the South coast of West Africa that borders Ghana to the West, Burkina Faso up North and Benin is on the East. To the South of Togo is the Gulf of Guinea.
Many students from Cameroon think America is easy: money is easy to get, luxuries are common, and jobs are plentiful. However, Cameroonians who come here will be disappointed by how hard life is and how difficult it is to attain their goals.

However, after World War I, Germany lost control of these colonies to the French and British, who divided up the territories into mandates, which later became South and North Cameroon respectively. By the 1950s, the French side of Cameroon became dissatisfied with colonial rule, and created the Union des Populations du Cameroun (UPC) which pushed for Cameroonian independence. After the UPC was outlawed by French officials in 1955 a bloody civil war began that lasted years after the country gained independence, which could have resulted in between tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of deaths.
