I wake up to an unusual feeling: Caspian’s arms are not around me. I shiver; he keeps the Ihana at an ungodly chilly temperature, though I don’t usually realize it because he keeps me warm. My shoulders feel bare, unnatural. When I open my eyes, I see him sitting up in bed, cross-legged, staring at me. His head is cocked to the side, a strange expression on his face, like he’s never seen me before. His orange eyes examine me in a way I’ve not seen since I first met him. And then it hits me: It came. The day he forgot me has come. And on Christmas Eve, too, a day when we’re supposed to celebrate and have fun and kiss the ones we love. Except what if the person you love doesn’t know who you are? “Caspian,” I whisper. “Are you okay?” Lines of worry appear all over his face. “I should know you,” he whispers back. “I should know who you are. She wraps her arms around me and lets me cry into her shoulder. She strokes my hair like my mother would when I was little and scared of a thunderstorm. Violet doesn’t say anything; she doesn’t need to. When I think I’ve let everything out, I pull back and give her a weak smile. She pushes a strand of snotty hair behind my ear. “Let’s go Christmas shopping today,” she says. “Take your mind off what’s going on. Leave Caspian here to find memories of you.” I give her a dubious look, but she tells me to trust her. So I do. She rounds up everyone, keeping a chipper attitude despite the solemnity of the situation. She flies the Ihana, something I’m still not used to seeing, to a planet called Noëlla. “How are we supposed to even buy stuff?” Keeley asks. “I have, like, no alien money. I barely even have money from Earth.” Violet smiles and raises an eyebrow. “Secrets. You place your hand on a payment orb and tell a secret. The orb determines the psychological value of the secret.
