The purpose of this experiment was to determine if rubber bands or bungee cord would put more force into the launch of the catapult. The experiment was designed to test the hypothesis if either a bungee cord or rubber bands would help an eraser to launch further, because of more force. The catapult was launched twenty times: ten with bungee cords and ten with rubber bands. There were two bungee cords for the ten launches and fifty rubber bands for the other ten launches. The catapult was tested ten times with both, bungee cords and rubber bands. The launches were recorded to how far each shot went and averaged. The position of the catapult wasn’t changed so that the measurements were accurate and the data was accurate. The bungee cords definitely
Before even beginning to measure the ping pong ball’s “journey”, we had to create our own catapult. Using materials provided by Ms. Csigi, such as popsicle sticks, hot glue, rubber bands, and a spoon, we created the our own, unique catapult. First off, we created a square with four popsicle overlapping each other. Then we created another square and connected the two by the edge, with one side upwards. Then we got a spoon and glued it on another popsicle stick. Because the spoon needed to be at an angle, we hot glued the bottom facing the bottom of the square. We connected rubber bands to the spoon so that once we pull the spoon to ground zero, the
Objective: Using a marble launcher, launch marbles from different angles with different forces to find the maximum height and the velocity as it leaves the launcher. Using different variables and results to determine how the different angles and amounts of force effect the variables. With this data show the effect the forces cause in 1-D and 2-D motion, as well as in the X and Y directions. This is done through kinematic equations and calculations.
The purpose of this experiment is to see how height affects distance and to see how adding additional height affects the distance that the ball travels. Also, to see how gravity pulls the ball down storing energy and releasing the energy as the ball hits the bottom of the ramp and to see the distance the ball travels after books are added.
A ball of twine. A packet of gum. A spelling medal. These are just some of the many things Boo Radley left Jem and Scout in the hole in the tree. Before Nathan Radley put cement in the tree, the best part of Jem and Scout’s day was finding one of these treasures in the tree. If I were able to give gifts to Jem and Scout through the tree, I would give them gifts that would encourage them to follow their dreams and make them happy.
The Barbie Bungee lab was conducted in order to find the association between the amount of rubber bands and the distance the Barbie bungeed. Before performing the final experiment, the group conducted an initial investigation to get data that could be analyzed to examine the comparison from the amount of rubber bands to the length Barbie was able to bungee. In the investigation rubber bands would gradually be added one by one starting at two rubber bands. Each time a rubber band was added, three trial bungees were done and the lengths the barbie dropped were recorded. Using data collected from our background investigation, the group used excel to create a sheet displaying the data in a table, a graph showing the correlation constant, the line of best fit. The line of best fit was in slope-intercept form (y=mx+b) where y represents the length of the trial average; m represents the slope
In this lab, we applied the concepts of velocity, force, acceleration, time, and distance in order to calculate which trial had a higher velocity. We also learned the relationship between each of the factors and how altering one plays a role in the other factors. For example, if we were to apply more force the velocity of the cart would increase, as well as the amount of time it took for the cart to go down the
Next, during the experiment, it was observed that the hole in the lifesaver was not big enough for Sam to go through it. It was also observed that Sam and the lifesaver were both very fragile in the sense that they could be reshaped or stretched easily. In contrast, during the lab, it was observed that to go through with the procedures four paperclips are needed. Further, into the lab, it was noticed that the lifesaver needed to be stretched at least 4 more mm for sam to go through the lifesaver. The hypothesis was proven to be correct because after reshaping the paper clips from their original form it was
In the clothespin lab, we shot a marshmallow placed on a clothespin by applying force to the longer end of the clothespin and calculated the distance the marshmallow was shot by measuring our pace, walking from the clothespin to the spot where the marshmallow first hit the ground, and then converting the amount of steps (paces) it took to walk to the marshmallow to
The age of a Pine tree was measured five times independently using a new electronic probe inserted in the tree’s trunk. The measured values were 46 years old, 45 years old, 47 years old, 45 years old, and 47 years old. Later this same tree was cut down and, by counting the growth rings, it was determined that the tree was really 34 years old. Does a measurement with this new electronic device for measuring the age of trees have a larger problem with bias or with reliability? Explain.
2. No, the forces went in equal and opposite directions just as the rubber band and string
(Melvin, Mangonel - “Physics of Catapults”) The speed and distance of the projectile depended on how much force the catapult applied to the projectile, and the momentum depended on the mass and the velocity of the projectile (dead diseased cow, or flaming
In the bungee blast lab the independent variable was the band stretch and the dependent was the distance of the rocket. I think our experiment was well controlled, because we were careful to stay in the lines of our procedure. For example: some things we kept constant were, the height we shot the rocket from, and the angle we shot the rocket from. We made sure to keep our constants, however, different people were shooting the rocket for each band stretch length. Therefore, some of our data may have been affected adversely.
* The relevance of this experiment is similar to understanding a real airplane. Paper airplane models are derived from an actual plane these days. The design of an airplane has so much to do with distance, hang time, speed, and many other factors. Understanding the models I have chosen to make help me
On one side of the straw there was two wings paired together and about 45 degrees apart; on the complete opposite side, there was the other set of two wings positioned the same way. Additionally, this design team also plugged the front of the straw by forming the modeling clay to a point and they moved around and adding clay to position the center of mass just behind the middle of the rocket. Both of the rockets were designed to be fairly aerodynamic with relatively small wings to reduce the effects of air resistance, by as much as physically possible without compromising the stability and consistency of the flight path. After a few test launches we collectively decided that team’s two rocket a better and more consistent flight, so we declined team’s one rocket design and continued the rest of the testing and data collection with team’s two rocket. After moving out to the stairwell for some vertical launches we found out that Roman’s and Dylan’s rocket had too much mass for the rocket launching apparatus to propel the rocket to a height that would clear the railing, even when using the maximum plunger drop height. With this dilemma, our team had to enter back in the design phase in order to modify rocket in such a way the would reduce the mass without compromising the favored flight path
Cole: Our fab friday project was to build a slingshot and see what the optimal object for launching was. The first thing we had to do was build a slingshot. First we created the frame in 3 steps. First, we made the base using planks and then we added the supports to hold the bands which would be used to launch the projectile. Then we had to put extra supports so the other supports wouldn’t cave in while attempting to shoot.
