As I Lay Dying is a book set in the early nineteen-hundreds. Each chapter alternates perspective of one of approximately 14 characters throughout the book. William Faulkner uses each character to guide you through the death of a prideful mother, Addie Bundren, and the family willing to travel for days to bury her at her parents’ graves.The Bundren family consists of Addie her husband Anse, and their children, Cash, Darl, Jewel, Dewey Dell, Vardaman. Darl can be understood as the most systematic character throughout the book, mainly driven by reason rather than emotion. In contrast, his brother, Jewel, is fiercely loyal to their mother, and is willing to go to unspeakable lengths to protect her, even after her death. The Bundren family has had nothing but bad luck on their trek to Addie's’ gravesite, including the death of their mules, nearly drowning in a flooded river, and their brother, Cash, on his deathbed …show more content…

Darl realizes that the burial of their mother isn’t worth their losses. Consequently, he sets out to incinerate her coffin by setting fire to the barn she was located in. Although Darl and Jewel have had minor conflicts in the past, the incineration of the barn was the turning point for Jewel and Darl’s relationship in the book, and the basis in which Jewel threatened to send Darl to an insane asylum. The song I composed is centralized around the conflict of these two characters. At the beginning of the song I used a pattern of octaves in the bass clef to reflect the hostility in the situation. The depth of the octaves contrast with the slightly quicker melody in the right hand to give the song a worried, detached feeling. I also integrated accidentals such as “F” sharps and ‘B” flats into the song to further a “darker” feeling. The song then changes into a waltz, where I hoped to imitate a quirky, almost insane sounding melody.
