In this report I have chosen to investigate bulimia and describe the variety of services available and how they support someone suffering from this condition. People who have bulimia try to control their weight by severely restricting the amount of food they eat, then binge eating and purging the food from their body by making themselves vomit or using laxatives. Therefore this can make the individual severely sick and depressed. There are a range of services available for help and support for someone who suffers from bulimia.

People use food to cope with their feelings instead of using it to satisfy their hunger. People can become bulimic to gain a higher self-esteem. It is not a response to hunger; it is a response to depression, stress, and low self-esteem. Bulimia has no concrete cause; researchers are beginning to think it is caused by dissatisfaction of the body (“Bulimia: Symptoms, Causes...” 1-4). Men are also susceptible to becoming bulimic. It is the drive for thinness, perfectionism, and the fear of giving up that triggers eating disorders in men. Men are under much pressure to look strong and maintain control. They are pressured to take care of the financial worries and be the foundation for a family. “Around 33% of men have an eating disorder” (Hall 1-4). Even though it’s women who are mostly affected by bulimia, it’s still a serious issue when it happens to a man. Even though stressful events are reasons for eating disorders, they aren’t the only reasons.

From an objective point of view, my physical health was crumbling before my eyes. From a subjective point of view in my very disordered mind, I was completely fine. I have lost to, fought against, rose up from, and recovered from an eating disorder. I was able to solve this majorly risky problem. At age sixteen my self-esteem was extremely low and my weight was at an all-time high. A doctor would say I was healthy for my age; however, my insecurities would not let me see it. The desire to lose weight was so strong I began the dark path down the road of bulimia. At age sixteen, I was aware that I had an eating disorder and it was not until two years later that I would seek treatment for it.

“Up to 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder” (Wade, Keski- Rahkonen, & Hudson, 1995). There are many factors which contribute to the development of eating disorders including “biology, emotional health, and societal expectation, and other issues” (“Diseases and Conditions Bulimia nervosa”). One of the most prominent eating disorders in America and around the globe has been around since the Middle Ages: “Bulimia is first reliably described among the some of the wealthy in the Middle Ages who would vomit during meals so they could consume more” (“A History of Eating Disorders”). Today bulimia is more prevalent and is predicted to affect around “4% of women in the United States” (“Eating Disorder Statistics and Research”). In 1979, Gerald Russell published a description of bulimia nervosa. It was the first description of bulimia ever published. Only a year later in 1980 bulimia appeared for the first time in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III.

The women with Bulimia exhibited negative responses to their bodies and that “self-images captivate[d] the attention of [the] BN patient” (Ortega-Roldan, et al). Their bodies also went into a defense mode, and part of the study’s results “confirm that one’s own body is perceived by BN patients as an unpleasant, uncontrollable, and activating stimulus” (Ortega-Roldan, et al). This study’s purpose was to look for a different way of spotting Bulimia, but it highlights the mental devastation that the people with these disorders face every day they face themselves.

As mentioned earlier, the SEDS was originally created as a measure of assessment to evaluate the behavioral and cognitive aspects of anorexia and bulimia. The idea is to be able to be aware of the signs to catch the problem before it peaks. The SEDS was designed by Williams and Kevin Power, to evaluate people suspected to have an eating disorder, testing their behaviors and cognitions, rather than to diagnose the disorder (Atlas & Berk, 2005). It was also designed to monitor the progress and examine the effectiveness of treatment.

Many conflicts across the globe are deciding whether to take sites about bulimia and anorexia down as to “better” the world. The world is now traumatized with the growing fear of their youths being twisted into believing such folly accusations about eating disorder web pages that our shown through-out the internet.
