Buddhism; Though it isn't the most popular religion in the world, it is definitely one where the practices of the Buddhist ahereants are well known as well as their beliefs. About six percent of the world today follows Buddhist traditions. This is nearly 376 million people. However, even though nearly every student at some point during their academic life will encounter a class that teaches about the Buddhist lifestyle, the best way to truly undertand it is by visiting the Buddhist Temple. Upon visting this temple we were given the chance to speak to a monk and learn about the life of Buddha, the life of the monks, and the beliefs behind the Buddhist way of life. Anyone who enters the main area for worship was to leave their shoes right outside the door and enter without them. The images that covered the doors were ones that showed the food that the monks could eat, and the ones that should not be eaten. According to the monk, regardless of the food that can or cannot be eaten, monks do not eat after noon. They may drink the nector from the fruit and vegetables that they are permitted to eat, but eating after noon is not acceptable. Monks are considered to be pure, which leads to another regulation for the monks. They live by the rule that they could not be touched by any vistors. Even simply tapping on them or brushing past them would result in their need for fasting and cleansing. Meditation is a huge aspect of the Buddhist way of life because meditation allows one to become connected with their inner self. It was believed that Buddha had become awakened through his meditation and realization of what causes his suffering and happiness which led to what is known as the Four Noble Truths. The meditation sessions take place on Saturdays and does not consist of one class where everything is learned, but instead several different classes where things are learned over a period of time. He had said that the first session was just to get to clear your mind and learn the way you think.
