The 1900 election was a rematch of the 1896 race between Republican President William McKinley and his Democratic challenger, William Jennings Bryan. A major focus was whether or not the United States should keep building empire.
Mckinley was for empire as he was the one to wage war against Spain with the intention to not only to free Cuba but gain control of the Philippines to have an entry point into China. In total the United States acquired Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines from the Spanish-American War. Then after pressuring from sugar planters McKinley expanded the empire further, annexing Hawaii. This is what he did in his first term as president and showed no interest in stopping the gaining of United States empire.
Bryan
President William McKinley agreed with annexing the Philippines. He said it would be bad business and discreditble if we turned them over to France and Germany (doc C). Also we couldn’t
Election of 1800 was between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. It was one of the emotional and hard-fought campaign. James Madison joined Jefferson in leading the opposition Republican Party. The two parties were endorsing different platforms. John Adams and Charles C. Pinckney ran for the Federalist Party. Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr ran as Republicans. Both these Democratic-Republicans defeated Federalist John Adams but tied with each other. They ended up tiring because party discipline was so excellent. The Republicans were so well organized that everybody voted for the two men.
After the Spanish-American, Cuba was free from Spain. For instance,William McKinley President of the United States”In March McKinley gave Spain an ultimatum, including demands for an end to brutality inflicted upon Cubans and the start of negotiations leading toward independence for the island.”(The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica 1).The statement from the article by the E. E. B proves that McKinley wanted to end it peacefully. Combat in the Spanish-American War started early May and ended mid-August. The Treaty of Paris was signed and Spain ceded from Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Some people thought of the Treaty of Paris as “imperialist”. McKinley’s foreign policies were big when he was
The election of 1896 was the 28th presidential election of the United States. The election was between the two candidates William Mckinley and Williams Jennings Bryan. This election was famous for ending what was known as the third party election and starting the fourth party elections. Other people that were competing in the election was Thomas Brackett Reed (Speaker of the House from Maine) , Matthew S. Quay (Senator from Pennsylvania), William B. Allison (Senator from Iowa), and Levi B. Morton (Governor of Iowa). Mckinley had a campaign manager named Mark Hanna that was a wealthy and talented businessman. Mark Hanna has the hardest time earning money for the campaign because of Mckinley's plan for the Gold Standard.
The United States needed to create an empire because the Philippines could not govern themselves. Document C says that “ that we would not give (The Philippines) back to Spain- that would be cowardly and dishonorable”. We would be cowardly and dishonorable if we gave the Philippines away, the Philippines could not manage on their own. If the United States gave the Philippines back to Spain they would not be able to manage on their own. The Philippines are an unstable for self-government and soon would fall apart. Creating an empire was the best option for the United States because it gave America to become closer and be more civil.
The American people sided more towards the Cubans then with Spain within during the war. There was a big difference between the Cubans and the Spanish people. The Cubans were very poor people who did have much, while the Spanish controlled everything and had everything. This upsetted many people from the poor to the rich, and the Spanish just wanted to do what was right. The War with Spain was ultimately suppose to help the other people and the government. And this War with Spain started to include the Blacks which was gonna end up making things more peaceful and an “era of good feelings”. All Spain wanted was a perfect sound of unity among the people around them without the issues of racism, etc. (document 1) As a step to fix this, the American government try to adopt a policy of neutrality to help with this issue. The Americans reached out for help, but got little in return. McKinley just wanted to help the Philippines. They were unfit for self-government as I said above, and soon as time went on, they would have an “anarchy” and would soon be misruled for so many things. According to Document 3, McKinley just wanted the Philippines to be involved in the church and one night after speaking to God, he figured it all out. He decided that all he could do was to educate them and to provide them with everything he possibly could. (document 3) A lot of the Americans were starting to believe that all the people were ready to start accepting peace and neutrality, that was still yet to come in the years to follow. (document 4) The Spanish-American War had a big effect on a lot of things throughout the 19th and 20th
Secondly I believe that Mckinley made a few mistakes in some of the decisions that he made. He asked for Congress to help him make a declaration for the war. He also was hurt and insulted be the terms of him being weak and hypocritical, so I believe that he was starting to take all of this a little personal and he ended up taking it just a bit to far. If he would have been rational in the decisions that he made than maybe we would have not went to war with the Filipino’s.
As for the people who agree with Imperialism, there was quite a bit. Yes, we had the U.S states but we wanted more. In Document C, Mckinley is making a new suit. But it's not your typical suit, it is suppose to represent the land the United States has gotten. And how much imperialism has made us develop over time.
The election of 1800 was a fight between the democratic-republicans and the federalists party for presidency. It also became the first time in American History where there was a peaceful shift in the political party, from the federalists party to the democratic-republicans party (Jeffersonians). The election of 1800 consists of five candidates, each believing that victory by the other side would ruin their nation. The candidates were, Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson in the democratic-republican party, and John Adams, Charles Pinckney, and John Jay in the federalist party;
The second Industrial Revolution was a time of economic prosperity. This success made many think America should spread overseas. Foreign policy was a debated topic in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many Americans, including William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, should spread its influence overseas to places like the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, but many others, including Mark Twain and William J. Bryan, felt that imperialism was not what the country needed and was against its values. Those in favor of overseas involvement thought America should civilize others, while those against thought America should spend its time and focus on domestic issues.
Also, Social Darwinism had been a huge influence to many Americans, which led them to believe that the United States had a responsiblity to bring industrialization and democracy to less developed nations. Many American leaders, such as Theodore Roosevelt, thought that the ticket and key tool for imperialism would be a powerful naval presence, his, “big stick” that would rival any great European power. Through necessity of resources and war with Spain, the United States would free Cuba, annex Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. Annexation had a pronounced affect on the citizens of those countries, more so in the Philippines. As we know the United States engaged in imperialism to promote their influence of democracy to new parts of the world. The United States believed they had a responsible to police the Western Hemisphere, but the United States’ decision to engage in imperialism was much more than
Taft was opposed by William Jennings Bryan, running for a third time. Progressives were excited with Taft's election and conservatives were delighted to be rid of Roosevelt. The campaign which Taft won was more about personality than the issues. Taft won with 52% of the popular vote.
"American imperialism in 1898 was not a sudden abandonment of anti-colonial tradition but was a logical extension of commercial expansion, something the US had been doing throughout its history" (SparkNotes: The Spanish American War, 1898-1901,: Effects of the Treaty). President McKinley was not interested in wars of conquest or of territorial aggression. His interest in expansion was "to make the United States first in international commerce and as a means to implement its humanitarian and democratic goals" (Faragher, J., Buhle, M. J., & Armitage, S. H. ,2008, Out of Many, A History of the American People, 6th ed., Vol. 2, p. 561). McKinley would eventually be forced to act in a humanitarian effort for the people of Cuba and to protect
Due to the circumstance I strongly feel Jane will win the case. She will win for consequential damages. Defined in the textbook as; foreseeable damages that result from a party’s breach of contract or special damages. Which are caused by special circumstances beyond the contract itself. When the seller fails to deliver goods, knowing the buyer plans to use or resell goods immediately. For example in the case: Hadley v. Baxendale where the Hadleys hired Baxendale to transport the shaft to be fixed, Baxendale promised to deliver the shaft the following day. But the shaft was not delivering until a few days later which cause the Hadley’s to close the mill for a few days which cost them money. The Hadley’s sued to recover profits lost during that
Prior to the second Industrial Revolution, Americans lived in a very isolated nation. However, accompanying the Industrial Revolution was domestic prosperity that led to an urge of expansion in many Americans. Many supporters argued that expansion was necessary because the United States served as an international police to civilize others, while opponents argue that the united states should maintain focus on domestic problems and keep their traditional identity. Imperialism became an evident issue during the Spanish-American War.
