I understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder; however, in my opinion, Bruce Jenner looks like Hilary Farr from a distance and up close he looks like a client on the television show botched. As for Serena Williams, I think that she is a very attractive woman, but her body builder like features ruin her overall sex appeal. DL Hughley stated in his interview on “The View” that he also did not see Caitlyn Jenner as attractive, and then compared him to Laverne Cox by saying she went all out and Caitlyn gave up in the process. I completely agree with DL Hughley because the fact is Bruce Jenner has not completed his transformation, and is debating on if he should finish it. I have nothing against LGBT people, but as long as Bruce Jenner
She compared Serene Williams and Anne White, two very well known tennis players and how each is portrayed differently by the media due to their race. Tennis, as well as skiing, is a very white-dominated sport. Serena was a very easy target because she was black and everyone she was competing against were white women. The media played a huge part for making Serene Williams feel unwelcoming rather than unique. The media portrayed Serena Williams and her sister Venus as the “other,” there was no doubt that the sisters were very talented and athletic but the media saw the sisters as a non-explainable classification and categorized them as “other.” Sid Rosenberg, who was a white male sportscaster made hurtful downgrading remarks towards these African American athletes. He stated that he couldn't watch them play anymore because they were disgusting to watch since they were too muscular. When he was told about the sisters one day appearing in a Playboy magazine, he ignorantly responded by saying they had a better shot for posing at National Geographic. Rosenberg, ignorantly dehumanized the William sisters because their body type was different than the majority of white women in
There were social, economic, and cultural influences on Caitlyn Jenner which affected her lifetime achievements. This paper will focus on the person who went from winning the Olympics as a man to being declared “Most Famous Transgender Women in the World” and the things that influenced her to becoming who she is today.
It has been said, “Judging a person does not define who they are…but defines who you are.” Being judged is discrimination toward a person’s character. Discrimination is a practice to judge others based on their person beliefs. There are many areas in which people are judge others such as appearance, beliefs, race and religion. People discriminate against others because they base their judgment off appearance. We all are human and we all should be treated equal. In this case, Brent Staples, Susan Boyle, Travon Martin and myself are people who know what it means to be judge base on their appearance. You can’t judge people based on their appearance.
Beyonce has been surrounded in controversy in the last few months, but she is no stranger to controversy. In 2013, Beyonce sampled the audio tapings of the Challenger explosion and faced backlash from the media. Family member’s, colleagues, and friends have commented on Beyonce’s choice in featuring the clip in her song ‘XO.’ June Scobee Rodgers, the founder of Challenger Center for Space Science Education and widow of the Space Shuttle Challenger Commander Dick Scobee. “We were disappointed to learn that an audio clip from the day we lost our heroic Challenger crew was used in the song 'XO'. The moment included in this song is an emotionally difficult one for the Challenger families,
With the constant availability of the media’s opinion, it may be hard for someone to accept their body image, but it is defiantly possible. Athletes, female in particular, like Serena Williams, struggled with body image, but later found their bodies to be a reflection of their performance on the court, field or track. They are focused on one thing only: becoming better at what they do and if that means spending some time on the bench lifting weights to gain muscle
The two had a poor relationship and naturally got a divorce because divorce wasn’t new to the two, they had both already been through a divorce with their first marriages. However, major conflict perspective happened when Bruce decided he wanted to be a woman in season 10 and came out to his family. This shocked everyone. It took Bruce a long time to become who he really is because of societies expectations and his gendered role as a male and father in the family. He has stated numerous times that the reason he kept this hidden for so long was his fear over how this would effect his children not only within the family but also protecting them from the media. This ended up positively changing societies views on sexuality, gender, and roles people traditionally expect from a male. This news was shocking to the family and completely changed the relationships among members. Kris and Bruce kept it together for their kid’s sake, but with this single act of Bruce turning into Caitlyn, she inspired people across the nation to come out and be who they really want to be. The media praised Caitlyn for her bravery and strength that she won several awards and started her own reality television
The picture I have posted is of Arnold Schwarzenegger. My question to you is, would you elect this guy as president? Arnold Schwarzenegger began his career as a body builder and later became a famous actor, staring in many famous movies and roles. In 2003 he ran for governor of California and won. However, his career and home life have been shadowed by many controversies. One such controversy is that Schwarzenegger has admitted to steroid use during his bodybuilding career. He stated “steroids were helpful to me in maintaining muscle size while on a strict diet in preparation for a contest. I did not use them for muscle growth, but rather for muscle maintenance when cutting up”. This statement would make one question his integrity,
Michael Phelps is an American icon. He is a widely known professional swimmer representing the most decorated Olympic Athlete of all time. Phelps held a positive reputation until the release of an image in which the 23-year-old swimmer was allegedly smoking marijuana from a pipe (bong). This image received much commentary and attention from the public and this study was designed to analyze and evaluate the repair strategies used by Phelps, his sponsors and his organization to repair the crisis. The main crisis involved the release of the photograph of Phelps and created a need to present an image defense.
When women decide to participate in sports traditionally for men such as bodybuilding, they risk the chance of being socially stereotyped as lesbians, or simply viewed as "less feminine" then say women figure skaters. For example, Venus Williams is seen as criticized for being very masculine in build and judged on that by her performance. The media has commented on how well she plays, and has compared her to men in her sport. She receives fewer endorsements than many other tennis players do because of her looks (but mainly due to her race).
The object of this reaction paper is the continued exploration of the ramifications of policy making in the reinvention of health care. The premise of the panel discussion was the current American health care system is financially unsustainable and morally untenable. Further, the current health care delivery system is not meeting the basic health care needs of societal members. Despite having the costliest per capita health care spending in the world, our health care outcomes lag behind most developed countries, including those with socialized medicine.
One behavior that I would like to improve for myself is increasing my daily physical activity level. I chose to utilize the Revised Health Promotion Model (HPM) to address this behavior. Upon reviewing the various models and theories in chapter three of the textbook, the revised Health Promotion model stood out to me and I felt many aspects of the model are perfect to address the behavior I selected to change. The three main components of the model focus on the individual characteristics and experiences, behavior-specific cognition and affect, and the behavioral outcome (Pender et al., 2011). All of these components are essential when planning and intervening to change a behavior. The text states “Research indicates that often the best predictor of behavior is the frequency of the same or similar behavior in the past. Prior behavior is posed to have both direct and indirect
Eating disorders have been a topic of controversy for numerous years. I myself have struggled with an eating disorder for three years, not only as an individual but as an athlete. Being a competitive cheerleader for fourteen years has opened my eyes to many different experiences and primarily developing an eating disorder. The last three years, I was apart of one of the most prestigious all-star cheerleading teams in the world. My team was known for winning numerous national championship titles and four world championship titles. My team was raised on a pedestal by other coaches, teams, athletes, and judges; therefore, my teammates and I were expected to reach a certain expectation. I am known as a flyer, the one who gets thrown in the air,
When it comes to athlete’s controversy you will never know what is going to happen to them. It is starting to become a familiar thing for athlete’s to be in some type of trouble. Sometimes the controversy that the athlete deals with isn’t always something that people take as a serious matter. Athletes who commit crimes, typically don’t think about what that does to their reputation or their career. Most athletes that get in trouble, will go through so much stress if the story gets out to the public that they have a murder, domestic violence, DUI or any other case. When it comes to athletes who break the law, the three major viewpoints are those who feel they get off, those who feel their treatment
“Williams slays Sharapova to reach ninth Miami Masters final” (2014 CNN) In one sentence they managed to paint Sharapova as a victim who was violently destroyed by Serena Williams. So even though Williams won fairly; Sharapova is painted as a victim who should be sympathized with, while Serena Williams is an aggressor. This headline enforces the narrative of if your white and feminine you are vulnerable. And due to Williams physique it is easy to negatively associate terms with her because her appearance does not meet the norms.
Serena Williams is a household name; she is one of the top female tennis players so thus she was named as Sports Illustrated’s sportsperson of year of 2015. Serena is seen as a powerful woman in the sports industry. She is also a black female sitting on a throne essentially on this cover. Williams is pictured wearing an all black outfit, which can constitute her ‘classiness’. Her lace bodysuit, black pumps, and long necklace helps show the feminine side of this athlete. It is interesting to see that her legs are one of the main focal feature of her body likely since she is a tennis player who often has exposed legs which makes it easier to run around in. Williams appears to convey both femininity and masculinity; she is wearing a very form fitting and
