The Bronx Zoo: Welcome To The Jungle Where in the world can you see grizzly bears wrestling in the water, giraffes walking through the grass, and penguins playing in the snow, all in a span of a few minutes? How can you experience incredible and exotic animals without traveling across the world? Lucky for us New Yorkers, we can experience the jungle without even leaving the area! Welcome to the Bronx Zoo.
The Bronx Zoo was founded on November 8, 1899, by the Boone and Crockett Club which was later renamed the Wildlife Conservation Society. On opening day the zoo boasted a whopping 843 animals in 22 exhibits. The zoo borders the south side of the New York Botanical Garden. The land on which the zoo was built was bought from

This was the first animal hospital in the United States of America to be located in a zoo. In 1941 the zoo got a brand new ambulance specifically for animals. There is a famous photo of veterinarian Leonard Gross standing in front of the new ambulance holding a lion cub. In 1985, a new animal hospital was built. This new hospital was over ten times the size of the first one. Since medicine and technology have changed in major ways over the years, the new animal hospital also has been updated and modernized to keep with the times (Thompson 1). I’m sure many animals have had their lives saved by this incredible hospital. A unique thing about the physical property and architecture of The Bronx Zoo is that there are several New York City landmarks, located within its walls. The biggest one in the park is the area from the Rainey Gate entrance on Fordham Road which was landmarked in 1967, all the way to the end of Astor Court at the zoo center, which was landmarked in 2000. The Rainey Gate is named after Paul James Rainey who lived from 1877–1923. He was an adventurer famous for catching a full grown male polar bear with only a rope and his adventurous spirit (“New York City Government
The City Zoo is a private non-profitable, volunteer and professional service organization, started in 1905 when “Samantha Fresaer donated a hedgehog to the city park” when it was run by the City itself, until the year 1982 the ownership has been transferred to the Zoological Society. Ever since the City Zoological Society took over the leadership the local economy increased and the zoo made almost 8% in local economy for each tax dollar it
The exhibits are also very fascinating, and after going to the zoo you can catch a glimpse of a certain animal's way of life. Without zoos we wouldn't have the unbelievable experience of seeing Earth's most beautiful life forms. Zoos keep endangered species safe, and out of harms way. We need to start caring about the life forms on this planet. Showing each animal compassion, and love. My knowledge on zoos has been stretched after my reading analysis today. Based off of the articles, "The Stripes Will Survive", "The Zoos Go Wild", and "Our Beautiful Macaws and Why They Need Enrichment", we can truly get in-depth analysis about the role zoo's
The first zoo in the United States was established in 1874 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia zoo first only had 813 animals but
The oldest zoo in the world still in existence is the Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna, Austria. The modern day zoological parks look like a Safari. As I am standing under a lattice of positive ions surrounded by a cloud of delocalized electrons. I realize that the Sacramento Zoo needs to be updated. The Sacramento Zoo is located in the capital city of California it should be supported by both county sales taxes and public donations because both types of revenue are necessary for a zoo to continue with the conservation and natural habitats in which animals can thrive, should resemble a scene of an African Amazon, and be the best place to learn about Wildlife.
Zoos take giant roles to protect animals. In the magazines I read, "The Stripes Will Survive", and "The Zoos Go Wild," and the video that I watched called "Behind the Scenes with the National Zoo's Lion Cubs.", there are ways that they help the animals.
Before the grand opening of America’s first zoo, people would gather and pay shillings to see animals such as lions and elephants displayed at places like general stores and museums. Though the zoo was prepared to open in 1859 was set back fifteen years due to the Civil War. Finally, In the mid-1850's, a well known Philadelphia physician, Dr. William Camac-the zoo's founding father-became involved and led
Initially, zoos have improved a great deal over the last four thousand years. They do not have any more cages or steel bars. They have continuously tried to provide exceptional and friendlier environments for these wild animals.
There are several zoos exist in other places. For example, San Diego Zoo is one of the most attractive park in whole California. San Diego Zoo is huge park of wild animals in Babloa Park. It has over 3,700 exotic animals of 650 species. I visited San Diego Zoo last summer, and I noticed how amazing it is. Also, it has polar bear and giant panda which is not existed in Los Angeles zoo. San Diego zoo divided to seven spaces and
In the early 1930s, the Central Park Zoo was nothing more that a rotted wooden structure that housed lions and tigers located in New York, NY. The infrastructure was so bad many Park Department officials thought the animals may escape. The man that brightened the zoos future was names Robert Moses. His goal was to create a "picture-book zoo." With this, he
A 12 acre zoo located on the Eastern side of the park, Prospect Park Zoo is a fun place to spend the afternoon with family. Housing 630 animals representing 101 species, the zoo is situated in the heart of Brooklyn and attracts thousands of visitors a
The Bronx Zoo was opened on November 8, 1899, with approximately 6,000 animals and about 100 exhibits and is still adding animals daily. The Bronx Zoo is a great place to visit. Animal lovers and families should visit the Bronx zoo because of the exhibits, the fascinating animals, and the history that makes it great.
Background Info: Zoos in American have changed a lot over the years, but they have not made the full transition to where they should be yet.
Staten Island Zoo is located at 614 Broadway, West Brighton Staten Island, New York. The construction of the zoo began in August of 1933 but the zoo was not opened until June 10, 1936 (“History of the Staten Island Zoo,” n.d.). The Staten Island Zoo was the first zoo in the United States dedicated to educational mandate. It was also the first zoo in the country devoted to satisfying an educational mission. The zoo has opportunities for interns, goals to help the interns, and a mission to succeed.
I do not believe that there are any necessary changes to be made to the zoo. At this moment, there is no big issue with the zoo and I believe that they should continue to do what they are doing. Two benefits to keep things the way they are is that if nothing is wrong why should you change it, although there is always room for improvement. Additionally, not only has it been listed numerous times as one of the top zoos in America, it has also been named one of the best zoos in the world. Stories that I found to support my claim
Since approximately 1250 B.C., ancient Egyptians had created and practiced the capture and display of animals in what are now known as zoos (Fravel). Records describe such exotic animals as birds, lions, giraffes, and tigers in captivity (Fravel). Since then, zoos have continued to entertain millions with the exciting chance to view exotic animals up close and personal. Even in ancient Greece, exotic animals were on display in fighting arenas, and in enclosed viewing areas. Originally in America, zoos were just created so that royalty and the wealthy could flaunt their exotic animals to the public (Leolupus). Today, with species threatened and habitats disappearing worldwide, zoos are serving a new purpose other than the mere exhibition of
