The Bronx Zoo: Welcome To The Jungle Where in the world can you see grizzly bears wrestling in the water, giraffes walking through the grass, and penguins playing in the snow, all in a span of a few minutes? How can you experience incredible and exotic animals without traveling across the world? Lucky for us New Yorkers, we can experience the jungle without even leaving the area! Welcome to the Bronx Zoo.
The Bronx Zoo was founded on November 8, 1899, by the Boone and Crockett Club which was later renamed the Wildlife Conservation Society. On opening day the zoo boasted a whopping 843 animals in 22 exhibits. The zoo borders the south side of the New York Botanical Garden. This was the first animal hospital in the United States of America to be located in a zoo. In 1941 the zoo got a brand new ambulance specifically for animals. There is a famous photo of veterinarian Leonard Gross standing in front of the new ambulance holding a lion cub. In 1985, a new animal hospital was built. This new hospital was over ten times the size of the first one. Since medicine and technology have changed in major ways over the years, the new animal hospital also has been updated and modernized to keep with the times (Thompson 1). I’m sure many animals have had their lives saved by this incredible hospital. A unique thing about the physical property and architecture of The Bronx Zoo is that there are several New York City landmarks, located within its walls. The biggest one in the park is the area from the Rainey Gate entrance on Fordham Road which was landmarked in 1967, all the way to the end of Astor Court at the zoo center, which was landmarked in 2000. The Rainey Gate is named after Paul James Rainey who lived from 1877–1923. He was an adventurer famous for catching a full grown male polar bear with only a rope and his adventurous spirit (“New York City Government
