The birth of a new child usually brings jubilation to the parents. After all of the initial celebrations have ended, and the parents bring the infant home, this is when the child’s development begins. Even before the celebrations begin, the child’s development begins at the fetal stage (Boyd, Johnson, & Bee, 2009). Bronfenbrenner’s Systems theory describes how external environments and individuals affect the development of a child (Boyd, Johnson, & Bee, 2009). The relationships are interconnected among all individuals and their environments (Boyd, Johnson, & Bee, 2009). These environments are referred to as spheres. Same sex marriage has become a norm in Canada in recent years. This alternative definition of marriage used to be considered taboo to even mention it publicly in most western societies. With these new laws, the topic of same sex marriage will also be taught in school to new students just like how the Charter of Rights was taught to me in school. Exosystem Within the exosystem are the institutions that make up the socioeconomic system (Boyd, Johnson, & Bee, 2009). These are the elements of the bigger macrosystem. According to Swick and Williams (2006), “we all live in systems psychologically and not physically; these are exosystems” (p. 372). These would include daycares, social service agencies and health care services (Boyd, Johnson, & Bee, 2009). As a member of a low income family, there was a need to access social services agencies in order to meet the needs of being fed and paying the bills. Along with the visit to the social service agency, the social worker would also connect the family with a food bank. Even though the child does not directly need the service, the parent will use these services for the benefit of the child, (indirectly usage). (Swick & Williams, 2006). Another example of an exosystem is the mass media, such as newspapers, radio and social media. The communication industry impacts everyone at any age whether or not you are a child or an adult. The second stage of Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory is the Mesosystem. The Mesosystem is a system comprising the connections between immediate environments (i.e., a child’s home and school). The Mesosystem provides the connection between the structures of the child’s Microsystem (Berk, 2000). Developmental Psychology has widened my perspective and knowledge of the nature of development from humans’ infancy to adolescence and emerging adulthood. Although I have learned about biological, cognitive, and socioemotional processes and periods of development, I am especially interested in socioemotional development in infancy because it is the foundation for a child’s future development. That is to say, if children have a healthy socioemotional development from infancy, they will have a healthy life later on. By understanding the developmental process in infancy, I will be fully prepared when I have children or when my family’s members do.
Development psychology has many ideas of how humans are influence during their development. The ones that this paper will be covering are the Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems, nature and nurture influences and cultural influences. I have also given my own personal influence to further demonstrate my understanding of each idea.
Developmental psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner first introduced the Ecologicial Systems model in the 1970’s. Bronfenbrenner argued that to understand human development, the environment in which the person belongs must be understood (Bronfenbrenner, U.1979). The Ecological Systems model concentrically depicts how a person’s development is influenced by their wider environment. In the original model there were four ecological levels in the system, however in 1979 Bronfenbrenner added an additional fifth level (Bronfenbrenner, U. 1994). With the developing person in the centre, the five progressive levels of environment include the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, marcosystem and the chronosystem.
Early childhood is the most important phase of development in one’s lifespan as the experiences during childhood sets the course for later stages of development. It has been noted that a mother’s actions during pregnancy may influence the development of an infant. The developmental influences include prenatal, perinatal and neonatal environments. (Santrock, 2002) Although babies come into the world with no say or control over which family they will be placed into, or the environment in which they will begin to live in, theorists agree that the first two years are crucial, with early emotional, physical and social development influenced by the infant’s biological and environmental factors (Sigelman, Rider, & De-George Walker, 2013). Sabrina is a seven-year old girl. She is in Primary Two this year. Both her parents are teachers in a primary school and she has a younger sister who is two years younger than her. Sabrina’s maternal grandparents lived with her. Her grandfather passed away two years ago. Then her grandmother passed away later that same year. Sabrina was very close to her grandmother and her death affected her badly. She would still ask for her grandmother when she was in Primary One and was not able to accept her death. Sabrina was referred to the school counselor late in 2013 as her parents had to be persuaded to give their consent. The counselor started having sessions with her this year.

In this theory you have: microsystems, exosystems, macrosystems, chronosystems, and mesosystems. Microsystems being what we commonly consider to be the “nurture” of a child, family and caregivers. Exosystems are places such as school, macrosystems consist of the economy, politics, and the cultural values placed by parents or by geographic location, and chronosystem is the time or era that the child is being brought up in (7). Canada is often seen as a leader in the gay rights movement and it has a long history of providing rights to those that identify as homosexual (BC Teachers’ Federation, 2016; Cotler, 2015). As far back as 1969, Prime Minister Trudeau passed Bill C-150 which amended the Criminal Code to decriminalize “gross indecency” and “buggery”; if committed between two consenting adults if they are over 21 (BC Teachers’ Federation, 2016). The Code was further amended to drop the age of consent for anal sex from 18 and 14 for other sexual activity and it was recognized that a higher age for consent of anal sex was unconstitutional (BC Teachers’ Federation, 2016). Since then there have been many changes to the political and social system in Canada to be able to improve the rights not only individuals whom are part of the LGBTQ community, but also for those whom are in same sex relationships (BC Teachers’ Federation, 2016). As of 2005, same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada; however, there is still debate of whether or not same-sex legalization has legitimized same-sex partnerships within society (Colter, 2015). Many cases that have come before the court regarding homosexuality and same-sex marriages have argued that the actions of society are a direct violation of people’s s.15 rights in the Constitution; which allows for every person to be treated equally and bear the freedom of religion (Supreme Court Judgements, 2004).
