The diagnosis was: broken fibula. “You will have to undergo a surgical intervention”, said the traumatologist after an unfortunate Football game. A few titanium cloves were the beginning of what it would be a long season of home working. And while I was -compulsorily- practicing this work dynamic, I began to think about the benefits and drawbacks for both, workers and companies. And it´s just that I´ve also experienced myself, that gaining efficiency in home working, involves certain conditions that may not exist in all cases. First of all, it requires a lot of discipline by the home worker. Sometimes, the fact of not being immersed in a work environment may contribute to the lack of attention, action and reaction to some situations. In addition, it is essential to apply this same discipline when working time is over because we may end up working longer hours than usual, just because we don´t have the ability to separate personal from working time. I can´t ignore the key factor that this kind of work dynamic contributes to a sedentary lifestyle: as we do not need to move, we exercise much less. Besides, the lack of participation and integration with the teams in the office can even affect growth prospects and employees’ promotion chances. It is a fact that the new communication technologies have enabled to remotely connect with members of the organization, but it happens sometimes that not being in the same physical space can give us the feeling that we can´t defend our ideas with the same emphasis as if we were there.
