British East India Company: The British Colonies In North America

The 13 colonies in North America struggled for independence. The British government passed many laws and took action that the colonists felt were unfair. As a result, the American Colonists took actions to oppose the British rulers.

The British colonist of North America had many reasons of why did they dissolve all ties with England in order to form a new country. In this essay, I will talk about the top 5 reasons of this issue, these reasons are the Stamp Act in 1765, Boston Massacre in 1770, Tea Act in 1973, The Intolerable Acts in 1774, and Lexington and Concord in 1775. All these reasons led the British colonists break away from England.

The extent to which the conflict between Great Britain and her North American colonies was economic in origin rather than rooted in political and social controversies and differences. For example, the imposement on trade and taxation on imports and exports.

The British were able to obtain diverse raw materials for goods because of their central location. Great Britain had good access to the atlantic ocean which gave it good ports.Britain often exported opium to China. Often luxury items such as tea and silk was exported. In 1875 they also imported 125 pounds of cotton that was used in the British textile industry. Great Britain was successful for its industrialization giving that they were holding lands in places

British North America by the mid 1700’s consisted of three major regions. The New England region included the colonies of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The Middle Region included the colonies of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The Southern Region, also known as the Chesapeake Colonies, included the Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Although all three regions consisted of British colonies, each region differed in terms of climate, geography, population, politics, economy, and religious attitudes. The colonists were also affected economically. Once the colonists were introduced to mercantilism. The reasons behind the sudden transition of England and it’s American colonies from allies to enemies is still debated today. When the colonies were first created they had a somewhat dependent relationship with the British. Trade was regulated through the British homeland while the British provided structure for the developing colonies. As salutary neglect came into play, the colonies became more independent in their ways by developing their own governments and laws. After the French and Indian War, the British economy dropped due to war expenses. The passing of the Stamp Act and all the taxes to follow were an attempt to create revenue for the British. This created tension between the colonists and the British government. The British government caused rebellion by trying to tax the colonists in ways that had not previously been done and by trying to control the colonies more closely than it previously had. The colonies were justified in waging war and breaking away from the British due to the unfair tyrant, burdensome taxes, and the aggressive behavior of the British.

As we know, the foundation of today’s American Society leads back to the transfer of people from the Britain to the New World, in the early 1600s. In his book, Bernard Bailyn, author of The Peopling of British North America, An Introduction, gathers demographic, social, and economic history research to form four propositions relating to the migration. While identifying central themes of our history, he attempts to present an overview for American knowledge relating to the causes of migration to the new world and consequences of society created

The policy-makers of England wanted to establish colonies in America because of economic and political change, religion and to increase their power. The economic change was due to the Enclosure Acts. The Enclosure Acts was the end to the open field system of sheep mostly, which had been the way people farmed in England for centuries. The abundance of wool made the landowners, merchants and suppliers very wealthy, but the migrants could not survive for being uprooted. The new world colonies were a hopeful choice to the migrants, but England’s upper-class saw the new world colonies as an answer to their problem of what to do with the growing number of poor people and those that were dissatisfied with the English government.

Between 1492-1776, although many people moved to the “New World”, North America lost population due to the amount of Indians dying from war and diseases and the inability of colonists to replace them. John Murrin states, “losers far outnumbered winners” in “ a tragedy of such huge proportions that no one’s imagination can easily encompass it all.” This thought of a decreasing population broadens one’s perspective of history from that of an excluded American tale full of positivity to that of a more unbiased, all-encompassing analysis. The Indians and slaves have recently been noted as a more crucial part of history than previously accredited with.

Before the American Revolution, there are several British Colonies in the Americas. Not all of them participated in the revolution. There were 13 clones which ended up rebelling. These were Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Mary land,North Carolina, South Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island. The colonists wanted to be free from the England. They started to fight the soldiers of the English army in 1775. The Americans started a war with England. We call it the Revolutionary War. The American Revolution was on April 19, 1775 and is called the “shot heard around the world” It was named that because the hand draw action of the battles of Lexington and concord an the siege of Boston

One might think that all of the British colonies in the new world were all the same. This is not the case though. The colonies, although they were all British they had some similarities but mainly they had differences. The Southern, New England and Middle colonies clearly show theses similarities and differences, particularly in terms of land, labor, religion, and native relations.

From 1607 to 1754, people’s views on governing themselves changed greatly. It began in 1607, with the settlement of Jamestown. They were a corporate colony, working for the Virginia Company, they were whole-heartedly British. The Great Awakening, the Enlightenment, and the Tradition of Neglect all introduced new ways for the American colonies to think of themselves as more independent. Although they still considered themselves part of the British Empire, by the end of this era they had discovered that they could make their own laws and constitutions that fit the way that their world worked as opposed to Great Britain.

The colonisation of North America by the Europeans became one of the most crucial points for the native North Americans. The differing experiences of contact between both cultures had overwhelmingly disastrous impacts on the normal way of life. From such contact arose the issue of land disputes, in turn resulting in massacres and frontier wars which could have otherwise been unnecessary. The factors stated above provide a suitable stimulus for a discussion in regards to the varying encounters of the Indigenous North Americans.
