Overall, the British conquest of India in the late 1800s to early 1900s brought about positive and negative changes to the country. Colonization of the land defined and segregated certain traits from others. Those who were defined as incapable or different were sent to lunatic asylums to protect the rest of society. They were scrutinized by their peers and stigmatized as a “lunatic”. The fact they were separated and incarcerated from the public established a negative outlook on mental illness. However, within the asylums, these individuals were the subjects of new health reforms and public health policies towards mental health. As the British started to invest in the development of mental asylums, they made renovations to the sanitation, health, and state of these facilities. They also modeled the mental asylums after their own, and they introduced the basics of modern psychiatry. These foundations consist of subjects such as research, drug therapy, patient care, preventative care, and vital statistics. It introduced Indians to the way in which medicine can be practiced as well as how certain treatments can be implemented to certain populations. India is still only reaching the surface of their research. They continue to investigate the burden of mental illness due to years of social consequences that have resulted in unemployment, stigmatization, and violations. The conquest of India has shown a very important concept about health and its’ policies. Health policies are a byproduct of people in control. These people can dictate who receives or who doesn’t receive health benefits. It can also dictate how much money, power, and time is designated into solving a health issue.
