Sebastian is a five-year-old male student at Desert Springs Elementary school, in the SunKids preschool program. Until few weeks ago he had an IEP for social emotional, and speech and OT as related services. Before his annual IEP meeting MET administered the BASC3 formal assessment and he tested out of Special Ed. with amazing results. He identifies with Asian/American ethnic category and speaks only English, which is the language spoken at home.

The Response to Intervention framework is a critical element of the Westside Elementary to meet the individual instructional needs of our students. The school utilizes universal screenings to access all students reading data in grades one through five, three times throughout the school year. Primarily, two assessments, STAR and Aimsweb data, determine the pathway of the students and the services deemed appropriate, including teacher information and collaboration with the MTSS team. The students partake in the assessments three times a year; fall, winter, and spring. Tiers are not stagnant; students may receive services from multiple tiers, depending on instructional, academic, and environmental needs. Therefore,

A child will be assessed by an educational psychologist if there are concerns about their intellectual, communication and behavioural development. Assessments can be arranged by the SENCO or independently. The aim of the assessments is to find out why the child is not progressing and what support is needed in order for them to progress. Specific learning difficulties are often identified in this way such as Dyslexia, AHAD, Dyspraxia. Support and targets for the child are then set to help them achieve. The outcome of the assessments may involve the child referred to other professionals e.g. occupational therapist, optometrist, speech and language therapist, psychiatrist. The psychologist will advise the school on how to promote development for example, keeping verbal instructions simple. Keep stories and group activities short to match attention span.

Students can be referred by a parent but usually it is by a teacher. Once a student is referred our school psychologist discusses with the teacher(s) several strategies to work on based on the perceived problem. If the strategies do not work she does a psychological evaluation. There are several different tools used in the evaluation: Students grades, testing data, classroom observations, WISC-IV, and WJ-III ACH are the most common. There are other more specific tests used depending on the area of concern including behavior assessments, and verbal and non-verbal tests. Once the evaluation is complete they make a determination based on a 15 point discrepancy method. If it is determined that the child has a need or qualifies as learning disabled in one or more areas they have 90 days to get an IEP in place. The IEP team consists of an EC teacher, the evaluator, a regular ed classroom teacher, the principal who is the LEA representative, parent/guardian, and the student. Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered school wide intervention model used to identify students in need of closer monitoring or more intervention. Johnson et al. (2006) explain the roles of general education teachers, special education teachers and administration in identifying and helping students. General Education will administer screening measurements for reading, writing and math. The data from these assessments will be evaluated and identify students who need additional support. Our district is well along the path to making Multi-Tiered Systems of Support a part of our normal routine. We are in our 6th year for reading and starting our third year of working on behavior. We will be continuing to work on both of those areas and rolling in math this year. All buildings have completed our first reading screener of the year and are busy doing further diagnostic testing of students who are not at benchmark. Some small groups have already started to address the specific needs of each student. These small groups change throughout the year based on the students’ needs. The goal is that students will master the grade level skills and exit the intervention group.

Programs randomly selected for the control condition will not have access to a mental health consultant, but will still receive Teaching Pyramid training and distance coaching. Behavior rating scales should be filled out by parents, and teachers to provide information on types and severity of ADD symptoms at home and at school, as well as types and severity of other emotional or behavior problems. Depression, anxiety and other emotional disorders are tested through a comprehensive psychological screening. Intellectual and achievement testing is used to help screen for and then assess learning problems, and areas of strength and greatest struggle.
