Black-ish is about a family man struggles to gain a sense of cultural identity while raising his kids in a primarily white, upper-middle-class neighborhood. The main artist, which is the family man, would be Anthony Anderson. His wife, Tracee Ross, His older daughter, Yara Shahidi, His older son, Marcus Scribner, His two youngest kids, Miles Brown and Marsai Martin. Black-sih first season premiered on September 24, 2014 and they plan on having two more seasons. Black-ish is constructed around stereotypes and explaining how must might not be true, doing this they are making people laugh throughout the show. The repetition would be how their youngest kids often act as such they weren't " black" while upsetting their father. Also a repetition
The Anatomy of Gray was a play performed by the Southern Union Wadley Campus Theatre. The play took place in the small town of Gray, Indiana where, according to the main character, June Muldoon, nothing ever happened. The town was full of good country folk, Rebekah Muldoon, June’s mother, Phineaus Wingfield, the town priest, Tiny Wingfield, the priest’s sister, Crutch Collins, the local farmer, Belva Collins, Crutch Collins’ wife, Maggie, the owner of the town diner, and Homer, the local farmer boy. At the beginning of the play, June’s father died from an illness. The town did not have a doctor, and because of this there was no hope for June’s father to survive. June prayed to God that he would send the town a healer, and at the same time make him good looking so she could marry him. A few days later June’s prayers were answered.
She makes being black not about color but about a stereotypical way of acting, talking and living. She also says to Cameron she doesn’t know how to “Shuck and Jive” like he can as if he is just submissive to whites, especially whites of authority. It’s clear that they do not like the stereotype given to blacks and Cameron displays that later in the movie when he just snaps and almost gets killed arguing with the cops. Cameron is a good hearted person who always does what’s right but after recently falling victim to racism he had had enough, so much so he beats up Anthony for calling him a “nigga”, pulling a gun on him and trying to steal his car, telling Anthony in the end “you embarrass me, you embarrass yourself”, handed him back his gun,
John Howard Griffin's research should undeniably be considered sociological. He began with a theory, if he became black he could help understand the difficulties between races as both a white man and a black man in the south and with this knowledge develop a means to bridge the gap. With this information he developed a micro-theory, trying to explain a limited part of human behavior; why is there hate among blacks and whites? He collected his data in a process of explanatory research. He needed to test his theory in order to elaborate existing explanations. He gathered all his data and went through all research methods in the hopes of explaining his theory. He followed the research
“Whenever my environment had failed to support or nourish me, I had clutched at books.” –Richard Wright, Black Boy. The author suffered and lived through an isolated society, where books were the only option for him to escape the reality of the world. Wright wrote this fictionalized book about his childhood and adulthood to portray the dark and cruel civilization and to illustrate the difficulties that blacks had, living in a world run by whites.
Understanding the essential characters in this episode is critical in understanding the inaccuracies of “the invisible black spectrum”. The main to characters in this episode are two cousins Will and Carlton. Will was born and raised West Philadelphia, wears urban stylish clothing and is engaged in hip hop culture. On the other hand, Carlton is from Bel-Air, dresses very preppy, and has very nerdy/ scholastic interest. Will and Carlton are polar opposites, for this they are constantly compared throughout the show. Will is obviously seen as “more black” than Carlton for obvious reasons. Will is from West Philadelphia, which is considered the “hood” as oppose to Carlton who is considered less white for being raised in the suburbs or Bel-Air California. Upbringing location seems to be an
Like the play, much of the action takes place in Troy and Rose’s backyard, where Troy works to build the long-promised fence around Rose’s property, a fence meant to keep Rose’s family “in,” a symbolic protection of the freedom the family has come to enjoy. The thrust of the action follows Troy’s breakneck monologs, each describing the racism he’s had to overcome as a black man who has done time, played in the Negro baseball league, and then not made it into the still predominantly white pros. Yet, Troy’s inability to see that times are changing for “the negro” only lead to the movie's major conflicts; he cheats on his wife and father’s a daughter out of wedlock because he wants “a different understanding of [him]self” and wants to “get away from the pressures and problems” he has faced in his life (Wilson, pg. 1391, 1985). Simultaneously, he undermines his gifted sons (played by Russell Hornsby and Jovan Adepo), incapable of understanding the opportunities the post-Brown v. Board world affords them, opportunities never offered to him. In short, the narrative maintains Wilson’s pragmatic realism and confronts the diametrically opposed definitions facing black men and women in the world today.
The Story “The Black Ball” written by Ralph Ellison is about a man named John, born around the civil war that goes through difficulties and challenges in his life him being an African American. In the story, it seems like it’s just a straight forward story but if you take a real close look at it you can see that there is a message within the story. Through Metaphors and allegories and other literary terms like characterization, you can see the negative of how racism and discrimination affects people in a big way of there thinking. The theme of the story would have to do with Persistence and doing hard work through the tough times.
The film has several ethnicities within a small area along a time line of one day. The film has many, informative methods in which it describe the various diversity issues of all the characters within the movie. For example, Sal’s pizzeria which is owned by an Italian American has pictures of famous Italian Americans on the wall and plays Italian music. One character named Buggin Out is always upset. Bugging out hates the fact that there are no black people pictures on the wall especially since the pizzeria is in a black neighborhood. His perspective represents the people in the African American community that always protest, but usually don’t work to improve the community. The
Black theater is as old as the first tribes in Africa who would dance with wooden masks to represent gods or legends (Kerr, p3). The playwrights of this time were the Griots, who were known as the keepers of history in African tribes and mark the beginning of African literary tradition (Freeman.) But when does the development of black playwright actually take off?
Cryptozoology is, literally, the study of hidden animals. It is the study of such creatures as the Australian bunya, Bigfoot, the Chupacabra, and the Loch Ness monster. It is not a recognized branch of the science of zoology.
The television show Black-ish has caused many controversial discussion and opinions. The sitcom features three generations of an African American family, the Johnsons, which includes a successful executive Andre; his wife Rainbow, who is a doctor; their four kids: Andre Jr., Zoey, Jack, Diane, and Andre’s parents Pops and Ruby living in a predominantly white suburban neighborhood in Los Angeles. The theme centers around how Andre came from a poor black neighborhood and his kids don’t seem to realize their culture. With this being the basis of the show, it has caused an uproar, with just its name alone being said to perpetrate racial stereotypes, leaving some with feelings that the show should be canceled (Peyser). The sitcom has even received tweets from Presidential candidate Donald Trump about being racist. This is as far from the truth as possible. Black-ish is not only non-racist it, but it is also a great show, providing laughs, life lessons, and diversity. Therefore, Black-ish is a good family sitcom and meets several aspects to be judged as one.
I think that Wilson’s choice of language spoken by the characters helped develop the play in many ways. This language affected the tone and mood of the play. The effect of Wilson deciding to use black English in this play personally helped me understand the play and the tone of the play a lot better than I would have if he would have decided to not use black English in this play. Black English helped develop the play and the characters’ voices because it showed the struggles of Black Americans and gave them an authentic voice.

“Hills Like White Elephants” is a story written by, Ernest Hemingway. In the story, Hemingway uses symbols to show the reader certain things that one could encounter during their daily life. Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities, by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. The use of symbols in “Hills Like White Elephants” is very important to the meaning of the story. The symbols in the story are white elephants, the train and the hills.
The director uses location to make a gap between black and white by putting them in different areas. It seems that the one belongs to black society, while the richer area is white’s. In this movie, black people are pictured to look like criminals, and their lives are messed up and they live in poverty.
