Memo #4
Sustainability means that the natural resources endure to ensure that the present and future's needs are met. In better words, "sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Brundtland Commission). It applies to the beverage industry because the industry needs to use products to make and fill the beverages, and also to reduce waste. The actions to constitute sustainable production and development in the beverage industry are to establish policies such as requiring workers to use sustainable products such as recycling cups and also the Chief Executive Officer could perform a risk analysis to analyze the problems in the industry

First, they can try to reduce carbon footprint by better processing and producing the beverages; before doing that, they should go through the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions assessment to know the size of a carbon footprint in the brewery. Reducing electricity and water bills would benefit the company too since it will save them money and energy. The CEO should also encourage employees to carpool together or take the public transportation since it is more "green" than everyone commuting to work in separate cars. Finally, they could put solar panels on the building, but it may be an expensive option. While addressing to climate change shows that the brewery gives attention to preserving nature, they may have to spend more money and time which might be a financial risk to the brewery. However, they may gain more customers so they would earn much more money …show more content…
They need to know how sustainability will impact their supply chain and what risks it will cause. Then, they need to communicate the supply chain to the suppliers and customers so they know the expectations. After the policies are enforced, Brick City must ensure that there will be proper training to adapt the changes in the supply chain. Then, they can measure the performance improvement over time. However, it will be a concern if Brick City used to acquire its agricultural products from places that are not local. Since they need to focus on sustainability, they need to acquire their products from local farms and markets. Again, it will be expensive, but worth it because consumers will feel satisfied.
The Brick City brewery can promote their sustainability policies to its consumers in a few ways. For example, they can show their policies on their website if they have any, and in the brewery too. It could also be shown in their mission statement and also host campaigns to inform the consumers. They can promote it through actions such as fundraisers and volunteering to clean up the Genesee River. Hopefully, their sustainability policies will be effective and shows corporate social
1. The geology of Ontario is divided into three layers of rock. The first layer, Precambrian Canadian Shield rocks, is composed of mainly igneous and metamorphic rocks from the Precambrian Eon. This layer is the eldest at approximately 3-0.8x109 years old and is therefore the bottom-most layer (L). Although this layer is largely found in the Canadian Shield region of Ontario, glacial erratics from the Precambrian layer can be found at the Don Valley Brickyard (L). In the GTA, younger sediments and rocks cover the Precambrian rock layer (L). The second layer is Paleozoic rock, composed of sedimentary rocks . It was deposited 600-400 million years
Bertrand Piccard quotes, “In the 21st century, the heroes will be the people who will improve the quality of life, fight poverty and introduce more sustainability. This is a powerful message, it sums up the concepts discussed throughout the course. Additionally, the case studies such as the New Belgium Brewery, SC Johnson and The Kimberly Clarke organization have been proven to practice this philosophy. As society progresses in its efforts to provide a more sustainable future, there is a fundamental foundation of principles that must be followed to ensure success. Sustainable business development takes into account the application of business operations as it relates to the three pillars of sustainability, which is a dynamic yet integrative place to begin this journey. DesJardins, (2006) calls for a re-imagination of the future to create a vibrant sustainable model; which forms similar beliefs to Piccard. In addition, organizations are more inclined to create sustainable practices based on consumer demand and the willingness of leadership to participate in sustainability programs.
Although some individuals or groups would argue that a brewing company cannot be socially responsible due to the nature of their product. Ultimately, their “to do” list will never end, and no matter how much they give back or enhance their operations to be more environmentally friendly, it will never be enough.
Frog Leap Winery utilized methods in order to become more sustainable and has been successful thus far. The company appears to be on the right track to becoming a fully self-sustainable company despite changes in the economy. The sustainable measure Frog’s Leap has implemented fail directly in line with the features of the triple bottom line. Frog’s Leap needs to measure “the impacts of their activities upon “people, planet, and profit – that is, how it created social, environmental, and economic value.” Leap Frog has managed to effectively make an impact on all of the aspect of the triple bottom line thus displaying the company’s progression towards self-sufficiency.
New Belgium Brewing try to reduce its negative impact from the natural environment. New Belgium Brewing (NBB) invest in a wind turbine, making it the first fully wind powered brewery in the United States. NBB has also invested a mist condenser that helps to reuses of hot water used for boiling barley and hops to create the after that brew. This steam also helps to heat the floor tiles and de-ice the room in during winter. NBB has also many other energy saving processes like use of daylight. I think that the company has chosen to focus on the environment because of the type of their business is unethical. From my view point its master product Tobacco and Brew both r harmful for society and environment. I think it just a way of advertising. We know Prevention is better than cure. SoI think it’s better to do something for environment without doing harmful activities
The purpose of this paper is to compare the sustainability practices of two companies in the same industry. The two companies chosen for comparison are The Hershey Company and Coca-Cola Enterprises, both of which are in the consumer staples industry. These two corporations are ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, on the Newsweek Top Green Companies in the U.S 2015. They have taken pride in creating sustainable product designs, having environmentally sustainable processes and supply chain management.
1. What environmental issues does the new belgium brewing company work to address? How does NBB taken a strategic approach to addressing these issues? Why do you think the company has taken such a strong stance toward sustainability?
Majority of carbon dioxide is released from big corporate companies and once this policy is implemented, they’ll start to look for alternative, more green sources of energy. Secondly, initiative from citizens is important as well. When residents start supporting locally grown food, using fuel-efficient vehicles or taking the public transit, it drastically reduces our carbon footprint. Lastly, it’s important to commercialize green energy. Although there are many smart companies like Tesla or First Solar, they are not enough. Coal or coal-reliant technologies are prevalent in our communities and therefore, generate the most profit. Therefore, if green technologies become more accessible to the general public, it’ll lead to the growth of this
Additionally, on a socio-cultural level, many consumers feel that restaurants partaking in green initiatives and operations are doing their part to not only help sustain the earth but also to conserving natural resources (Hu, Parsa & Self, 2010). “Going green” is not simply a trend in the food service industry but around the world and in all forms of business. Corporate companies consider “going green” as a sensible business strategy in building recognition for corporate social responsibility among consumers concerned with environmental conservation efforts. Lastly, technological initiatives such as Energy Star appliances (dishwashers, refrigerators, ice machines, etc.) and faucets that use less water must also be analyzed in their ecological conservation capability and weighed against their financial costs (University of Notre Dame, 2014).
Sustainability has become a great topic of interest in many arenas. Particularly, leading organizations are recognizing sustainability needs to be an essential aspect of their long term strategies. With this recognition, better business practices are being sought by investors as well as sustainability is becoming a driving force for better efficiencies and innovation. Two organizations, Wal-Mart and Starbucks, have both took on sustainability as long term initiatives to address their customer needs and affect how their suppliers operate.
In 2012, the United States Environmental Protection Agency awarded PepsiCo its prestigious Energy Star “Partner of the Year Award for Sustainable Excellence.” PepsiCo was honored with this award because of the continued effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Even with an increase in products, the company has been able to maintain their carbon footprint. Their goal is to improve energy efficiency by twenty percent and to keep greenhouse gas emissions at a level amount. Some of the ways
The community, business partners, customers/guests, and employees all have low power, high importance. The community expects a high level of quality products and services that provide significance to their area. This includes having both involvement and support towards the community growth. The protection of the environment and a conservation of natural resources is a concern of the
The original proposal for the site was four skyscrapers and it was approved by the City of Miami, however in 2008 with the recession the project was cancelled.

Sustainability is a topic that has become very important in recent years. Sustainability is defined as, “the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely.” ("Finding and Resolving the Root Causes of the Sustainability Problem", 2014)
