The Child Called “It”, a book by David James Pelzer is a story of Dave's horrible childhood. Born December 29, 1960 in Daly City, California, David's life was wonderful; until, his mother started to drink. David's story is one of mistreatment and perseverance through tough times. Dave is now 56 years old and speaks to troops and other person's as a motivational speaker. It is his life’s goal to help others persevere through tough times.

In my book, The Slippery Slope by Lemony Snicket, I would say Sunny Baudelaire changed the most. In the very beginning, Sunny was a little baby who couldn’t speak more than one word at a time. In the book before this one, you got a hint that she could be developing culinary skills or hobbies when she decided to put cinnamon in the hot chocolate. Now, Count Olaf is making her cook them food and her culinary skills are growing. She is starting to use her resources very well. For example, she took what everybody thought was a cigarette (that was already lit), and warmed up the food with its heat. She is now transforming into a little girl not only physically, but also mentally. In the book it says, “‘I’m not a baby,’ Sunny said, and hugged her.

The Boys of Summer, a non-fiction book of baseball, written by Roger Kahn. Who tells a wonderful heart aching tale of a simple stick and ball game that helped start the development to push Americans (generally the white population at the time) to change what the country claims to be, a free and fair non-prejudice country that gives “everyone” their own rights/opportunities. Jackie Robinson, America’s first African American to play on a Major Baseball league. He was the first colored-skinned to ever make history not only in the game of baseball. Robinson ignited a spark that sent Americans (mostly the white population) dumbfounded, that a “nigga” a dark colored-skinned individual was more than just a janitor. This book transcends the generation gap as Kahn recaps his boyhood in Brooklyn, his young career as a writer following the Brooklyn Dodgers, and a follow-up of the certain members of the Brooklyn Dodgers during post-playing days. As Kahn nostalgically narrates his story of the transformation of the Brooklyn Dodgers, a dead team who came back to life to make a major impact on the country, to a becoming dead of the last time. Reveals the theme that race play a huge role on American’s reaction to the Brooklyn Dodger, Jackie Robinson, and the aftermath to letting a “Negro” into a white man sport.

A raisin in the sun is a book that explains the life of a family that is in hard times but some how gets through it. The Younger family is at the bottom of the ladder when it comes to economic status this affects the whole family and dreams and values, but the one thing they are good at are arguing and keeping their dreams alive by being a family and loving and caring for one another when nobody else does. Since the last time I wrote a journal, I had just finished Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. Now, I started and finished Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and also started Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions. There are still sixty-six pages remaining in the novel. Fahrenheit 451 is about a man named Guy Montag living in a future in which books are outlawed. Guy is a fireman whose job it is to burn all remaining books currently located in his city. However, when Guy meets a strange girl living outside of his apartment, he becomes intrigued with what books have the power to do. Instead of following orders, Guy starts wondering why he is doing what he is told to do rather than just doing what he is told. Breakfast of Champions is a science fiction novel describing the lives of two strange men. One of these men is Kilgore Trout, an unheard of novelist who will soon become one of the most famous men in America. The other man in this story is Dwayne Hoover, a wealthy man who made his fortune off of speculation on the stock market. Despite his luxurious home and fantastic job, Dwayne will soon be appalled by Kilgore Trout’s idea that everyone around Dwayne is a robot. In both of these novels, change is an essential theme. In Fahrenheit 451, focus will be brought on the change of the world in which Guy resides, and also the change of Guy as a person, while in Breakfast of Champions, the focus of change is how much America has changed since 1973.

An important character in Henry Slesar's 'Examination Day' is Dick. Dick is a 12 year old boy with alert eyes and a quick nervous manner. Dick is a creative teen who stands out among the rest, he is intuitive, intelligent and very curious. Throughout the story we are shown Dick's unusually curious nature and intellect by the cleverly formulated questions he asks, such as "What makes it green though. The grass?" And "how far away is the sun." He also shows a peculiar disinterest in unsophisticated reading material meant for kids his age, 'He fingered the topmost comic of the stack, but seemed uninterested in the colorful squares of the fast-paced action. Susan McClary is a professor of musicology at Case Western Reserve University. From the very first paragraph of McClary’s essay, I felt as though her ideas of sexual connotation in the story “Jack and the Beanstalk” were imposed on me. I felt this way because her language was very performative as she uses words such as “thrust”, “climax”, “erect”, and “penetrates” to illustrate the essence of the story, when the original story of “Jack and the Beanstalk” was intended for children who arguably should not be exposed to this language. For this reason, I believe that her methodology in this essay was very hermeneutic, or interpretive. As far as the tone of this essay, it feels very blunt and aggressive because the language feels forceful.

The movie, The Breakfast Club, is a movie about five students who get Saturday school and become friends as a result of it. The characters were: Allison, the quiet girl who would sit in the back and refuse to talk; John, the troublemaker who always talked back to the teachers; Claire, the popular girl who always got what she wanted; Brian, the nerdy student who only cared about having good grades; Andrew, the wrestler who was only focused impressing his father. While watching the movie, I mainly related to Brian. He is pressured to have good grades by his parents and is labeled as the nerd because of it. I am also pressured to have good grades; however, I am labeled as the smart kid in many different classes, but I’m not classified as a nerd.
