Breathless by Lurlene McDaniel is a book where cancer destroys the dreams and future of Travis Morrison. Travis was the best diver in his town, and one of the most popular kids in school. He was sure that he would be a professional diver one day. An injury to his leg brings him to the hospital where he finds out the worst news of his life. Travis has osteosarcoma, bone cancer. The doctors have to cut off his leg in order for him to survive, which means he’ll never dive again. Travis knows that he isn’t going to get better, after several failed treatments. Travis wants to decide how and when he dies, but his parents won’t let him control that. It can occur at any age, but is most common in teens. It is usually found in the long bones of the legs and arms. Sometimes, the situation requires amputation. Cancer forms when cells start to grow too quickly and overproduce. The cancerous cells usually form a tumor. Cancer is very powerful because cancer often travels to other parts of the body, and forms new tumors there. With osteosarcoma, if the cancer doesn’t spread, the survival rate is about 75%. If it spreads, the chances of survival are around 30%. Treatments can help in some cases, but other cases are fatal. Cancer is very powerful, and can kill humans because no cure has been found
