This organization has to be an influential community leader that can help increase the likelihood of their nonprofit’s success by engaging in advocacy. As well, the organization personnel need to make a public commitment to support and strengthen the volunteers as me by providing leadership, expertise, and influence to advance the organization’s mission and impact. The women’s breast and hearth initiative organization complete all my expectations and more. They provide us with a free t-shirt, breakfast and lunch. The most excited part was when board members educate us, the volunteers about breast and heart health. For instance, they give us the opportunity to be involved in the community, speaking, teaching and
Each year, students orchestrate THON, a Penn State student-led philanthropic organization that raises money for Four Diamonds and Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Throughout the year, students coordinate fundraisers and a 46-hour dance marathon to cover costs that insurance companies will not cover and attain funding for pediatric cancer research. At Penn State, I intend to be a part of this phenomenal organization. Within THON, I plan to continue my leadership through becoming a committee member. Fundraising is an essential component in any kind philanthropic organization; therefore, participating in canning weekends, becoming a committee member, and raising money. All of the money raised through THON benefits Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital for groundbreaking research in pediatric oncology and medical support for families battling this devastating disease. Over the past 40 years, THON has raised over $127 million dollars to find a cure for pediatric cancer, the leading cause of fatal disease in children, which will impact the lives of those dealing with the effects of cancer and improve the overall quality of life for the
California Highway Patrol officers on Thursday were investigating a carjacking after the driver of a pink tow truck dedicated to an Arcata breast cancer center was forced to pull over along Highway 96 and robbed at gunpoint.
Charity Navigator has awarded Feed My Starving Children a top 1 percent rating for the last 10 consecutive years (Charity, 2015, p.1). The ranking of Feed My Starving Children with Charity Navigator is an extremely symbolic representation of our leadership and goals throughout the organization. This also gives way to the symbolic leadership theory which is defined as, leadership which refers to and based on the idea of meaning (Winkler, 2010, p.59). While many people donate their time and money to a verity of organizations the goal each person has is to effectively help a cause they are passionate about. When individuals donates to Feed My Starving Children they understand that the organization uses the donations to specifically further the mission of the organization. While other charities seem to represent a good cause they actually put little financial effort towards the mission and focuses more on the awareness of an issue. By explaining how Feed My Starving Children uses the donations and having the support of Charity Navigator we are able to our volunteers with accurate information which makes them more willing to donate to the organization and keep donating to further our
I would like to introduced Susan G Komen and Nancy Bricker. These two girls are sisters and they are also best friends. Susan got diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33 and lost her battle at the age of 36. Before Susan had passed Nancy had made a promise to Susan that she would end the terrible fight of breast cancer. Nancy her sister said this, “Her journey began with a simple promise to her dying sister, Susan G Komen that would do everything possible to end the shame, pain, fear, and hopelessness caused by this disease.” (Brinker, 2016) Nancy tried her hardest and during that trying period she created a foundation which is called the Susan G Komen Breast cancer foundation. Which was created in memory of her loving sister. Later
I received a letter from my dentist, Dr, Thomas Seerveld, DMD, stating that he is retiring. He has been skillful and considerate of mine and my mother's entire health concerns. During my search to find another dentist, I visited the Holistic Dental Association's website and saw your name listed as an active member.
For Cause, I will be looking at The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) as the sponsee and General Nutrition Centers (GNC) as the sponsor. Janelle’s Journey a breast cancer savior herself founded NBCF in 1991 (NBCF, 2015). The NBCF focuses on helping woman beat breast cancer. They do this through any resources and information. After beating breast cancer, it is important that woman live a healthy life style. GNC motto is “Live Well” (Centers, 1997). Strategically this is a great fit. Once woman have picked up the pieces and are back to a somewhat of a normal life style it will be important that they maintain their health. Part of that will be to take the proper vitamins and supplements. Why not get them from the very place that helps woman
The growing need for better quality cancer care (IOM, 2001) requires the understanding of the interacting factors (e.g. screening) and outcome (Lemon et al., 2003). Disparities in breast cancer care exist (Goss et al., 2011), moreover, patients with this disease fail to receive high-quality end of life care (e.g. pain and symptom management, end of life decision-making) (Katz & Hofer, 1994). Leaders in the care field need to create new strategies for the organizations in order to increase the care quality through the cancer treatment while maintaining the increased performance (Lemon et al., 2003). The IOM (2001) offer quality areas, dimensions to consider.
I never thought my Great Grandma would have died from breast cancer after she had beaten it three years before it came back. When it did come back in January of 2014 it was very scary because she was already 90 and had beaten once before in 2011 but now she was older and much more brittle because she had had a heart attack in between 2011 and 2014. We didn't really expect her to live much longer but we didn't expect her to leave so fast.
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, gravity, and decreased skin elasticity can affect the shape and firmness of the breasts. Women who are generally satisfied with the size of their breasts, but not the shape are best helped with a breast lift, also known as a mastopexy. The breast lift raises and firms the breasts, resulting in a more youthful breast contour. Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Dr. Charles Hsu, helps patients who are unhappy about the sagging of their breasts with breast lift surgery. If there is too little or too much breast volume, a breast augmentation or breast reduction might be recommended in addition to a lift.
Breast Cancer accounts for more than 20 percent of cancer in women, and is the primary cause of cancer death among women globally.1 Despite extensive scientific research on the disease, the outlook on a cure arguably remains poor. While some breast cancer survivors and women at high risk remain hopeful that soy intake will reduce the risk or even cure cancer, the recommendations are conflicting. For decades, the relationship between soy foods, supplements, phytoestrogen intake and cancer has prompted considerable debate for scientists and clinicians. Patients with breast cancer are frequently advised to avoid soy foods.2 And, the American Cancer Society recommends “breast cancer survivors consume only moderate amounts of
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of high mortality and morbidity in women population worldwide. Up to date, no effective breast cancer treatment has been developed and this has motivated academic scientists for the quest for alternative drugs and the discovery of drug targets. Increasing evidence suggests that carotenoids, which are micronutrients in fruit and vegetables, reduce breast cancer risk [1]. Previous findings suggest a protective role of α-carotene, β-carotene, lutein/zeaxanthin and lycopene in breast cancer risk [2, 3]. Lycopene, a known major carotenoid detected in human plasma, is known to hold the most robust anticancer and chemopreventive properties as demonstrated in clinical trials and animal models of various cancers including mammary cancer, prostate cancer [4] and brain cancer. In vitro and in vivo studies have reported that lycopene prevents the growth of different cancer cells of different organs and inhibits chemically induced carcinogenesis in animal models. Although the excellent antioxidant property of lycopene is most likely the basis for its preventive role toward cancer, the direct anticancer activities of lycopene through multiple mechanisms are disclosed, including regulation of growth factor signaling, cell cycle arrest and/or apoptosis induction, and changes in antioxidant and phase II detoxifying enzymes. The anti-inflammatory activity of lycopene is also considered as an important determinant that suppresses the
Breast cancer (BC) is a world health problem which is known to be the second most deadly malignancy in women (Veronesi et al., 2005;Alvarez.,2010;DeSantis et al., 2014). In 2010, annually worldwide 115 million patients have breast cancer resulting in 410,000 deaths (Kennecke et al., 2010) according to world cancer research fund international in 2012 nearly 1.7 million new cases diagnosed. This represents about 12% of all new cancer cases and 25% of all cancers in women. (Ferlay J et al., 2012 ). In 2014 Egypt represent the highest rates in the Middle East and North Africa around 18%.
Breast Cancer is on the fore-front of modern tumor research and scientists are continually seeking for new ways to treat and prevent cancer progression. Current treatments by hormone-dependent drugs like Tamoxifen and Raloxifene focus on estrogen receptor inhibition in mammary and endometrial cell lines. This group of drugs are known as selective-estrogen receptor modulators or SERMS, which are effective in estrogen-receptor positive (ER+) and hormone-estrogen receptor 2 positive (HER2+) breast cancers . Currently , researchers have turned their attention to retinoids – materials similar to vitamin A, which control cell proliferation and differentiation, apoptosis, and gene suppression in both normal and cancerous epithelial tissues. Specifically, fenretinide, a synthetic retinoid, is of particular interest for treating epithelial breast cancer after yielding positive results in inducing apoptosis in in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials. Fenretinide’s exact functions in the cell for chemo-preventative use are still being discovered, such as its supposed relationship with the nuclear retinoid receptors RARɣ and RXR β, which control cell growth and apoptosis, and its effect on insulin-growth factor (IGF) receptors, which are high risk factors for breast cancer. Fenretinide has been discovered inducing cell death by other novel means through receptor-independent mechanisms . Combination therapy of fenretinide and Tamoxifen together has shown greater effect on
In the maximization of its impact in the community, McKesson has aligned its signature volunteer programs with the funding area of Company’s foundation. Both of the programs’ main focus is cancer management, specifically giving non-medical direct services to needy cancer patients. The area is of great need, and it is linked closely to the core competencies of the Organization as a healthcare company (McKesson, n.d.). The McKesson Company has community days, which is the symbol of yearly all-employee volunteering event. In the community days, the workers take part in coordinated groups; volunteer their objects at the Company’s website being led by the volunteer
For metastatic outgrowth extravasation of tumor cells and secondary seeding are important. In secondary organs fibronectin expression is upregulated by primary tumors via resident fibroblasts, which serves as a docking site for VEGFR1+ hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) clusters and secondary seeding. During metastasis of breast cancer to lung, interaction of VCAM-1+ cancer cells with VLA-4-expressing macrophages, activates PI3K/Akt signaling in tumor cells, protecting them from caspase-induced apoptosis. Bone metastasis is also facilitated by interaction of VCAM1 with different integrin partner, α4β1, in osteoclasts. Thus, we can conclude that disruption of adhesion signaling between stromal cells and tumor cells can
