The article of my choosing that express American spirit is the Boston Marathon Bombings and how the city of Boston came together after a terrible terrorist act. Boston Stronger is written by David Ortiz Boston Red Sox Designated hitter. The Boston Red sox and David ortiz had a major part in helping the city come together as one.The Red sox won the world series in october six months after the bombing. David expressed that something like this should never happen especially on a day that represents sports so well. David had trouble understanding why the terrorists choose this event where people run for such good causes like raising money for cancer . Ortiz came was born in the Dominican republic and came here for baseball so he didn't know to much
This chapter provided information from the trial of Captain Thomas Preston. The chapter asked the question, “What really happened in the Boston Massacre”. Chapter four focused on the overall event of the Massacre and trying to determine if Captain Preston had given the order to fire at Boston citizens. The chapter provides background information and evidence from Preston’s trial to leave the reader answering the question the chapter presents. Although, after looking through all the witnesses’ testimonies some might sway in Captain Preston’s favor, just the way the grand jury did.
The Boston Marathon bombing was a shocking and devastating event in the history of the United States. In the middle of what was supposed to be a very happy and cheerful event, three people lost their lives and 264 others were injured when two pressure cooker bombs went off near the finish line. Even though this was a truly horrific event, the initial response of the Boston Police Department to the explosions was incredible. Within minutes, additional Emergency Medical Service teams and the Boston Fire Department were rushing to the scene, hotels were evacuated, and police closed down a 15 block area around the blast site. The remaining runners were also redirected to a different area away from the explosion. It was truly impressive to see how well prepared everybody was in the case of an
A well-known sense of community for the United States is the annual Boston Marathon. April 15th 2013 the city of Boston prepared for its race, but there was no way that it could have prepared for the tragic events which would rattle the entire country. Two pressure cooker bombs were detonated at 2:49 pm near the finish line amongst hundreds of spectators and athletes. The attacks resulted in six losses of life and over two hundred fifty injuries. Many questioned who the evil mastermind was behind this harrowing attack since it was the first terror attack on US soil since nine eleven. The two responsible for the slaughter are Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The term evil is often used to describe one who commits an outrageous and morally corrupt act,
A few hours after the photos were released the suspects shot an MIT police officer multiple times killing him. The two of them then carjacked a Mercedes-Benz in a neighborhood of Boston where they took the owner of the car hostage. They then forced the hostage to withdraw money from an ATM (Shallwani, 2013). The car’s owner was able to escape when the suspects stopped at a gas station. His cellphone remained in the stolen vehicle, allowing police to focus on Watertown (Shallwani, 2013). On April 19th shortly after midnight the brothers were spotted by a local police officer in Watertown (Arsenault, 2013). Within minutes the area was a standoff between the police and the brothers. As many as 300 bullets were exchanged between police and the brothers in the firefight (Arsenault, 2013). The suspects threw pipe bombs at the police when they were surrounded as well as a copy of their pressure cooker bomb, an exact duplicate of the Boston Marathon bombs. After several minutes of tense gunfire and homemade bombs going off the elder brother, Tamerlan, walked towards the officers until he ran out of ammunition (Arsenault, 2013). The cops then tackled Tamerlan but had to quickly scatter when the younger brother came in the stolen SUV and ran over Tamerlan (Arsenault,
The day was absolutely beautiful, sunny with decent temps which made for perfect running condition for the runners during the 117th Boston Marathon, and event held on Patriot’s day to commemorate the battle of Lexington and Concord that had started the Revolutionary War in 1775. 23,000 runners lined up at the starting line in the city of Hopkinton, the first wave of runners started at 9:32. At approximately 2:49 p.m. is when 2 bombs went off, at least 5,600 people still racing towards the finish line at the time of the explosion (History).
Terry Nichols received life in prison. “Until September 11, 2001, the Oklahoma City bombing was the worst terrorist attack to take place on U.S. soil.”A bomb carried in a Ryder truck exploded in front of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City at 9:02 a.m. on April 19, 1995. “The blast killed 168 people, including 19 children. More than 500 people were injured.Timothy J. McVeigh and Terry L. Nichols was convicted
What Boston did right following the bombing is attributed to what Boston did prior to the bombing. Twenty years prior to the bombing, in 1993, then police commissioner, Ed Davis, began to develop a culture of collaboration and transparency that facilitated trust, social capital, and communications among the various agencies and organizations in Boston (Davis, 2014; Williamson, 2014). As Davis indicates, transparency came through community centric policing, which fostered the environment for collaboration and increased communications and the cultivation of social capital grew. Davis was driven by the stated goal of prevention, which he learned was best achieved through problem solving and partnership.
Two terrorist attacks, both at different times, and both unexpected occurred. One being before the 1960’s and the other after. In the early
Whether or not information was shared on the brothers, the larger question remained: why did the brothers radicalize and kill and injure scores of people who were attending the Boston Marathon? Those who make the leap towards terrorism experience varying levels of, anger, passion, or frustration in support of their beliefs. In recent years, rising expectations, fueled by images of affluence and democracy spread by the mass media have provoked feelings of deprivation among many populations, particularly in Africa, Asia, and parts of Eastern Europe. Individuals who become terrorists oftentimes do so because they feel unheard, insignificant, unheard, or not important. Still others follow a cause or group that is misguided and can lead to violent
After two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon in 2013, former President Barack Obama stressed the event as an act of terrorism on America (Boston Marathon Terror Attack Fast Facts). The Boston Marathon bombing has played a significant role in reshaping the American views on terrorism. The American views on immigration, gun control, and police actions have been influenced by these bombings.
On the covers of newspapers and on the screens of many, the story of the Boston marathon hits the ground. Twenty six thousand eight hundred thirty nine people from all over the world came to run in this awe-inspiring marathon. Until the tragedy strikes right in their faces. The explosions, injuring scores of people, effected the lives of innocent civilians. Cheers were replaced with screams, sirens, and the first responders providing aide to the citizens. This was a brutal event just like the one on September 11, 2001. Instead of using seclusion towards political and economical reasons for events, the mass medias perceptive towards incidents involving the religion Islam has created the stereotypical thought in society in which we live in today.

In 2003 a man by the name of Iyman Faris who was a naturalized citizen of the U.S. made a plan with Al Qaeda (the terrorist group responsible for 9/11) to use blowtorches to take down the Brooklyn Bridge. Due to police surveillance and tips from the public, the police department was able to intercept this attack and he is now facing 20 years in prison for terrorism (Zuckerman, Bucci & Carafano, 2015).
