Throughout the years there has unfortunately been several instances of genocide and one of the most horrifying and tragic genocides was with the Nazi Holocaust that took place from 1938 until 1945. Another one of the horrifying genocides in history was the Bosnia-Herzegovina genocide that took place from 1992 until 1995. A genocide is essentially a systematic murder. Genocide is basically an attempted murder on individuals based on social or political reasons. Bosnia-Herzegovina was responsible for 200,000 deaths and the Nazi Holocaust was responsible for 6,000,000 deaths! Just because the amount of deaths between the two are drastically different does not mean that they did not both do a tremendous amount of damage and take a great deal of …show more content…
He blamed the Jews for all of the economic hardship that Germany was facing as well. He put out a majority of theories about Jews and blamed them for conspiring against the “master race” which were in his eyes people with blonde hair and blue eyes and fair skin. There were many, many years of hatred that went toward the Jews and the Holocaust finally broke out. When Ernst vom Rath died, the Nazis decided to use this as an excuse to make actual State-run attacks on the Jews. Immediately, 90 Jewish people were killed and then 500 Jewish synagogues were burned. Almost every Jewish shop had windows that were smashed thoroughly. Massive arrests also occurred against Jews… 25,000 Jewish men were actually forced to go into concentration camps. The St. Louis was a ship that had over 930 Jewish people crowded onto it and it was turned away from very many countries including the United States and Cuba. This means that the ship was sent right back to Europe and overpowered by Hitler’s control just like the rest of Europe had been. When the new world war started to break
A genocide is a horrible kind of war. It is a mass killing and torturing of innocent people who do not deserve any of it. There are many stages of genocides, which may or may not go in the same order. The Holocaust, being the largest genocide and a horrible point in history, is similar and different to the Bosnian/Croatian genocide. Although many aspects lead up to these genocides and other similar wars, there are possible measures that could have been taken to prevent all of this. No human should have to endure the pain of a genocide, especially as horrible as the Holocaust, or Croatian/Bosnian war. The Holocaust and the Bosnian genocide both consisted of many stages that led to a variety of horrible events, both similar and different, which could have been prevented if certain actions were taken into consideration.
The Bosnian-Herzegovina genocide or “ethnic cleansing” went on from April 1992 to December 1995 around the end of the Second World War. When Bosnia became its own independent nation on April 5th 1922 it wanted to “cleanse” its country of any non Serbian residents. The killing of Bosnian Muslims during this time was stated by international tribunals to be an ethnic cleansing however the events that took place in July 1995 in Srebrenica was so horrific it was deemed a genocide. The United Nations should have intervened a lot sooner than they did and should have sent more than just peace keepers to protect the human beings that were being slaughtered.
The Jews were starved to death, shot down for the most pointless reasons, were put through all different kinds of torture. Those who survived were forced to work in labor camps, all because Adolf Hitler had a bone to pick with Jews. Adolf Hitler was a dictator who had 850,000 Nazis under his hand. He despised Jews, and used his forces to take Jews hostage and force them to work in concentration camps. Ironically enough, it is believed that Hitler may have had Jewish ancestry. He wanted to rid the world of Jews, creating what he believed to be a perfect civilization.
Bosnian Genocide was a terrible act of murder which started when Muslims and Croats voted for independence in referendum that was boycotted by Serbs In 1992.When the European Union recognized Bosnian’s independence the war broke out and Serb’s occupied the country.
Nearly eighty years ago, Ukraine, “the breadbasket of Europe” suffered an awful famine caused by the Soviet Union. The starvation affected nearly every part of Ukraine, but it was most murderous in the south and east regions of the republic. On January 5, 1930, the Communist Party started Collectivization, the most inefficient agricultural system in existence, which is when trouble began to brew. This process forced all peasants to live on different food surrogates. Because they endured communal farming in their past, the Russian peasantry did not revolt against Moscow. The Ukrainian peasants, on the other hand, were used to an independent and individualized farming tradition, so the Russian communism was completely foreign to them, and they opposed Moscow bitterly. The slaughtering of their livestock before joining was one way the Ukrainian farmers showed disapproval to collectivization. The government later passed a death penalty for this kind of action. Although the Holocaust in Ukraine had been just as cruel as the rest of it anywhere else during World War II, many history books overlook the terrible genocide
They occur and we neglect to notice the unearned inequity. Even though genocide is difficult encounter as actuality it is. The Bosnian genocide was a heartbreaking event that caused misery and loss of lives to 100,000 with 80,000 being of the Bosnian culture (Bosnia-Herzegovina). March 1, 1992-December 14, 1995 35 dreadful months for the Bosnians. If you think of all the terrifying things done to them they would sometimes rather be dead than alive. Could imagine being in so much agony you would wish you were dead. The perpetrators, the Serbians were making an effort to exterminate the Bosnians. They were stopped by the Bosnians who fought for their lives. This would be recognized as genocide because it shares several characteristics with
Discuss and Analyze the similarities and differences between the genocide committed in Rwanda and Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
The Ukraine is known as the breadbasket of Europe. So, it is difficult to picture a continent such as this having people who would starve to death. But by the order of the dictator Stalin this is an event that indeed took place---a “silent holocaust” which caused the death of more than 10 million Ukrainians. This was a mass killing without bullets, guns, or executions but by slow painful starvation. This event called “Holodomor” literally means “death by hunger.” While the definition of genocide would come many years later, this atrocity surely fits the definition.
The genocide started on 26th March,1971 with the initiation of OPERATION SEARCHLIGHT which was begun on the mid night. It was an arranged military operation did by the Pakistani Army Bengali individuals from military administrations were disarmed. It was one of the biggest genocides in the current known history. Before doing this operation , Bengali individuals from military administrations were disarmed.Targets of the operation included Jagannath Hall which was a quarters for non-Muslim understudies of Dhaka University, Rajarbagh Police Lines, Pilkhana which is the base camp of East Pakistan Rifles.Hindu territories all over Bangladesh endured especially overwhelming
In simpler words, we people are evil and automatically judge others by their characteristics with absolutely no mercy. Of course not everyone goes as far as performing mass killings, but people do evaluate others on the most minute and basic features a person obtains. Classifying others by their appearance is what eventually leads to massacres and ‘ethnic cleansing.’ ‘Ethnic cleansing’ is a softer term used in replacement of ‘eliminating a portion of an ethnic group to get others to evacuate.’ Bosnia is one country guilty of committing this act. “(...) genocidal acts were used to attempt to instill the fear and devastation necessary to get the Muslims to leave their land and take refuge elsewhere, but that complete extermination was never the goal,” said by Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University. Another wicked performance of genocide was the ‘Tutsis in Rwanda’ debacle. The Tutsis is one of the many ethnic groups that are located in Rwanda. Basically, if you were just chilling like a villain and a government official thought you were Tutsi, you would need to present an identification card representing you as a Tutsi or not. If you were Tutsi or regretfully not carrying your card, you were generally killed on the spot. Overall, people are cruel and brutal for killing numerous people based on their ethnicity, but
He labeled the Jews as "foreigners" who invaded their economy and took away jobs. The Nazis created a Jewish genocide, also referred to as the Holocaust. Over six million Jews were brutally murdered by the German Nazis. They were shot, stabbed, beat up and sent to concentration camps. All survivors were forced to go into hiding. By 1945 only one third of the Jewish population was still alive. Though the Jewish nation was the most affected the Nazis also killed millions of Freemasons, Jehovah witnesses and any other political party members. The Nazis committed crimes against humanity though, to their benefit, they did provide prosperity for their nation.
The war in Bosnia and Yugoslavia in 1990 was deemed as an “ethnic cleansing” aimed at the Bosnian Muslims. These were considered large scale crimes in killing 7,000 Bosnian Muslim boys and men at Srebrenica. In Croatia and Bosnia in 1992 the war lasted seven months killing more than 20,000 people and more than 200,000 fled the country. More than 300,000 became displaced because of the war. In 1995 “Operation Storm” was on the rise and when Croatian Military forces retook the Serbs territory over and in doing so began an “ethnic cleansing” during this time they burned more than tens of thousands of homes and killing more than 100 civilians. More than 150,000 Croatian Serbs fled their homes. This was the single largest “ethnic cleansing” during the entire war in Bosnia.
Hitler had shown unwillingness to tolerate the Jews and once he was appointed Chancellor, he started to take elimination measures like deportation, forced emigration, and isolation to enforce his belief. He took advantage of Germany’s weakness in World War One, then used it as an opportunity to blame the Jews for Germany’s defeat. Hitler’s political party was the largest political party in Germany thus allowing them to draw very large crowds to gatherings. He had very good oratory speeches with hand gestures that easily manipulated people to adhere to his views. Hitler constantly targeted the Jews because he knew people believed in these speeches. People in Germany were already anti-semitic but Hitler made it worse by constantly consuming them in his speeches. From the way he spoke about the Jews, we could clearly see the possibility of genocide. Hitler wanted Germany to be free of any humans that anyone other than his ideal master race so he personally selected bodyguards to be part of a group called the SS. Hitler was responsible for ordering the SS to carry out the extermination of anyone who did not fit this ideal. The SS handled oppositions using force and as a result of which people were forced to give into the idea of violence. Sometimes people purposely went along with this Holocaust ideal due to the fear of getting killed. These terrors allowed the holocaust occur
strongly against the Vance-Owen plan. If Clinton was not bounded by the NATO alliances, it would have been rational for Clinton to dismiss the alternative. Lifting of arms-embargo also demonstrates how Clinton was bounded. By the time the United States government came to a consensus for military intervention, lifting of arms-embargo seemed to be the most rational actions. It would give Bosnian Muslims ability to defend themselves. This way, not as many American troops would be needed in Bosnia (Ullman, 1996). The United States could not enforce ‘lift and strike’ plan because there were British and French peacekeepers in Bosnia. If arms embargo disappeared, the peacekeepers will be put into higher danger. Once again, the need to keep the European alliance limited the United States from carrying out the most rational decision.
A genocide is a intended killing upon a large group of people, especially upon a certain ethnic group. The genocide in Bosnia, also known as The Bosnian War started in 1992 after Bosnian government declared independence from Yugoslavia. Bosnian Serbs did not like the idea of a free nation with majority of the citizens being Muslim. Serbs killed approximately 100,000 croats and muslims. The Genocide in Bosnia-Herzegovina is similar to the Holocaust because both involved the murders of certain cultures. This was the largest massacre in Europe since the Holocaust (Bosnia-Herzegovina).
