“Comedy is a distortion of what is happening, and there will always be something happening.” Comedian Steve Martin said those words in his book Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life. Chris Rock is a perfect example of a comedian that mixes jokes with social commentary that can and will make some people uncomfortable. His style is crass in your face jokes about sensitive subjects that will make you squirm in your seats one minute and then laugh uncontrollably. Rocks’ 1996 Comedy special on HBO Bring the Pain infiltrated the air with his infamous quotes that cashed in on societal contrast so prevalent during the mid-1990s. A reviewer from the website Variety stated: “The language is crude yet dead-on; as he crawls into the minds of the lazy, women, blacks and whites he uncovers driving forces and attitudes that are far too real in modern society.” Millennials can enjoy his unexpired comedic style now despite the decade lapse.
The show starts with a slideshow of old time albums covers featuring the most important comedic voices such as Redd Foxx, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson appear by way of prelude to Chris Rock’s groundbreaking, 1996 routine. The stage is completely bare with the exception of a huge display of his blue monogram initials. Chris Rock appears on stage with just a microphone. His material is focused, and his stamina is surprising as he does not pause for a sip of water, yet is full of life pacing the stage. The stage lights shone on him as he walked
The power of comedy is that it takes contemporary issues and stretches them to the extreme and then puts the exaggerated picture of who we are as a society back in our faces. Back a while ago, comedian great Mike Myers played Pitka in the movie flop "The Love Guru". During a number of scenes, Pitka would make comments, realize that they were catchy, and then quickly tack on and little "TM" to his statement. The idea was that he was trademarking everything clever that he said. Ridiculous? That's why it's comedy.
Cartoonists were protesting everywhere, screaming out, standing on top of soapboxes. They gave shouts of, "DISNEY UNFAIR!" . Cartoonists held up placards that included phrases such as "ONE GENIUS AGAINST 1,200 GUINEA PIGS", and a picture of Pluto the dog with the phrase, "I'D RATHER BE A DOG THAN A SCAB!". Strikers and non-strikers alike exchanged harsh words, "Fink", "Scab", "Commie", and the like. Gunshots were fired. A non-striker poured a circle of gasoline around the agitators and made a threat to drop a lit cigarette onto it.8 The other events that took place over the course of the nine week long strike were absolutely brutal. Walt became convinced that communists had invaded his studio and reported the dissidents to the House Un-American
I believe the subject of Mike Twohy’s cartoon is today’s culture. I say this because it shows the news reporters as lies, rumors, and innuendo to show that even in our daily culture’s news is not to be trusted because everyone feels the need for exaggeration. It shows a man walking a dog that is trying to see what is going on with the reporters, and he is seeing firsthand what reporters will do in order to get a better story. Furthermore, the subject of the cartoon is today’s culture in order to allow viewers to come to the idea that not everything in our culture is perfect and is to be trusted.
Analysis of Dave Chappelle's For What It's Worth Stand-Up Comedy Dave Chappelle’s stand-up comedy can be raunchy, grotesque, and
Even still, this super-size version of a popular Saturday Night Live skit was also a music extravaganza filled with an amazing line up of musicians who helped define rock’s identity in the early years.
As a child, I would always sit down by the television set and set the channel to my favorite cartoons. I would be entranced, watching the colorful display of silly humor and adult jokes that I could not understand. Many of them were interesting, but one show caught my attention and ultimately held a special place in my heart. This show, named Ed, Edd, N’ Eddy, became an obsession of mine that still lingers on towards my adulthood.
The duty of superheroes to others in need of help is just a minor part of this movie. (Bannon, 2013) stated some character’s lifestyles cannot even socially connect to a normal civilization and helping humankind is not their priority. It is like when The Comedian tells Dr. Manhattan that he could have stopped him using his power when he killed the pregnant woman in Vietnam (Gordon & Snyder, 2009). It can also be debated that the moral code of some may be classified as moral nihilist due to their disregard of human life in the process of their vigilante conducts. The Comedian’s view that everything is a joke clearly explains this and his deeds.
What makes this show so significant for the character? Well, for one, it established everything from the look of the Daily Planet, all the way to Superman's ability to fly.
This paper addresses the identity that is constructed of African-Americans through Rock’s language use of racial speech and taboo language. It also attempts to portray Rock’s function of the skit and the controversial attitudes that arose, including my own.
Recently Comedian Jim Jefferies, has received a lot of backlash for a joke made in his latest comedy special, Currently on Netflix, “Freedumb”. At the very start of the Special, Jim does a segment on The Bill Cosby rape allegations in late 2014. He has received massive backlash for this segment, even though he also claimed that he is an entertainer and that his jokes shouldn’t mean to be taken seriously. Even though he gave this disclaimer, people have stopped going to his shows and started protesting him, claiming that he can’t joke about rape.
This cartoon by Signe Wilkinson is from Signe Wilkinson’s Editorial Cartoons. It pictures a man holding a tablet/device while he says “All the world’s information is in our hands!!!” while standing in the palm of a giant hand; and on the sleeve of hand is the word “hackers”. It is ironic that the man standing in the palm of the hackers’ hand while saying he can hold the world’s information in his own hands. The cartoonist’s argument is hackers can gain information, money, and steal privacy through the technology that holds all the world’s information. We as a society gain a majority of our knowledge and information through technology and the Internet; because hackers have the knowledge and technological skills, it is easy for them to steal our

If a line of symmetry were to be drawn down the center of the paper, it would seem that each character rests within his environment about to collide with the other. Even without words, a vivid story begins to formulate in my mind, and hopefully I share the artist's vision.

Rock refers to the large group of people. However some of his sentences and words like; “People get mad” and “black” directly targets African Americans who boycott Oscar. At the same time, he causes white people to feel uncomfortable since white people who get prize may think that they did not deserve it. Rock also makes funny statements like “Me boycotting Rihanna’s panties.” He says that people will not able to change the current situation. Furthermore, he avoids making people nervous because of the unpleasant and problematic topic. This is the reason why he uses satiric sentences. Also, he shows racism problem as something easy to solve with the help of the humor. For example, he says “Like best black friend” after discussing having a black category like a women category. Rock sustains his
