The earthquake in Borah Peak, Idaho occurred on October 28th 1983. According to USGS’s website it marked as the largest earthquake recorded in Idaho by magnitude as well as in terms of damage. Caused by an impressive surface fault ranging about 34 kilometer long not associated with a plate boundary, the earthquake was assigned an intensive to IX due to the surface faulting but only ranked at a 6.9 on the Richter Scale. The biggest area of breakage occurred in an 8 kilometer crack between West Spring and Cedar Creek (USGS website).
The earthquake was not the only hazard to damage the area of Lost River Ranger. Hazards such as rockfalls and landslides. As a result of water fountain and sand boils fluctuated and raised the water table making
