Book Summary: The Woman In Black By Susan Hill

I read the first chapter in the book and immediately Ms Thompson came to mind. I worked with Ms Thompson my first year as a intern.   She had a group called Dolls and Dolls, that consisted of the most troubled young black girls.  The girls Ms Thompson worked with were a mirror image of the characters in the novel Pushout written by Monique Morris.  A lot of what Ms Thompson used to communicate with her  girls were very same as the book.    When I read  the  the line written by Manning Marable, “Freedom is the fragile flower that must constantly be protected-not from those at the bottom of the social order but from the whims and desires of those at the top”.  I remember these girls would get in trouble and Ms Thompson would say,” Remember you are a rose”.  Black girls are being criminalized by beliefs, policies, and actions that degrade, and  marginalize black girls in their learning environments and their humanity- relegating many to an inferior quality of education because they are perceived as defiant, delinquent, aggressive, too sexy, too proud, and too loud to be treated with dignity in their schools and  leading them to conditions  that is pushing black girls out of schools and render them vulnerable to even more harm.(Morris)I was blessed to have a great support from my mother.  My mother was very strong and believed in education.  She grew up in North Carolina when schools were segregated, and  all of her teachers were african american.  In her final year of school

I was particularly interested in Camille Dungy’s “Tales from a Black Girl on Fire, or Why I Hate to Walk Outside and See Things Burning” which we read from the book Colors of Nature Culture, Identity, and the Natural World. I thought that our discussion in class of her poem was quite good, and realized it was something I wouldn't mind thinking a little bit more about. As I reread the poem, I found a few sentences that I still didn't quite understand what she meant by. In light of this, I have decided to write on what I believe to be her meaning. I wasn't sure why the fear of walking outside didn’t hit her until she moved to an old plantation sate. Why would it take up until then if she had been hearing her families history her entire life?

Barthelme uses repetition to show how the narrator’s mind is deteriorating while being confined in a small space, isolated from everyone except someone he does not know, with very little instruction about what to do. A lot of what the narrator repeats throughout the story are what makes us, as the readers, believe that his mind is deteriorating. For example, when he repeats that they have been there for one hundred thirty-three days, Barthelme is showing how the narrator is counting the days to keep himself reminded. Although, it starts to make him question how long he and Shotwell will be in isolation and it starts to make him think differently about his situation and he starts to realize and focus on about how they are both unwell. In Darren Grant’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005), it illustrates a woman (Helen) who was married to a successful lawyer (Charles) for the past 18 years. While his law practice is extremely successful, their struggling marriage is far from perfection and it results in a messy divorce. Sadly, the two main characters used to be happy in their marriage, but 18 years of lacking communication skills turned to be psychologically damaging to Helen. While the movie is aimed at being comical due to the odd family members of Helen, it clearly shows avoidance of intimacy and John Gottman’s theory of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse.

In Killing the Black Body, Dorothy Roberts describes the history of African-American women and the dehumanizing attempts to control their reproductive lives. Beginning with slavery, to the early beginning of birth control policy, to the sterilization abuse of Black women during the 1960s and 1970s, continuing with the current campaign to inject Norplant and Depo-Provera along with welfare mothers, Roberts argues that the systematic, institutionalized denial of reproductive freedom has uniquely marked Black women’s history in America.

Throughout history, many people have been oppressed because of their race, religion and gender, resulting in the loss of their rights and freedom. Despite the fact that freedom is an inherent rights of any human being, many examples have proven that these rights often require rebellious acts to obtain said rights. Although human rights have evolved over the years, humans still fail to learn from their mistakes, resulting in history repeating itself. Through storytelling and novels, people show depictions of history to honour those who have died and to educate younger generations to prevent unfortunate events from occurring again. In this same vein, Lawrence Hill and Alice Walker display oppression through abuse, structural inequality and gender stereotypes. Although the novels, The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill and The Colour Purple by Alice Walker were written in different time periods and revolved around different cultural influences, each demonstrates the theme of oppression throughout various events.

Susan Hill introduces Arthur Kipps as an Old man. Living tucked away in a nice house in the countryside with a large loving family around him Kipps is the image of a man who has had a comfortable life with no bumps in the road. He is a man of habit and finds pleasure in knowing that everything is how it should be, under control. He looks back at himself as a young man and his experience in Eel Marsh House.

Threatre Review of Woman in Black The play I will be reviewing is called the Woman in Black, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the novel by Susan Hill. I viewed it on September the 17th at the Fortune Theatre in London. The Woman in Black is a Gothic ghost/horror story set around the Victorian period in which Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway.

Historically, Black women are depicted as the big black smiling mammy; the over sexed deviant with distorted body parts; and the angry sapphire. Within the male dominated comic art world, Deborah Whaley’s Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphics Novels, and Anime offers a countervision on the Black body. Women, especially Black women may welcome the book as a confirmation that their story is recognized and represented. For this audience, Whaley will explore the historical, racial, and sexual representation of Black women in sequential art pointing out the imagined Black body through interracial relationships, African fetishism, cultural politics, financial gains and transnationality.
