Book Review “Rising through the Ranks,” written by Mike Wynn is one of the popular books on leadership, which explains the importance of leadership and the ways to become an efficient leader. Wynn describes the expectations of an organization from a leader. A leader should undertake certain tasks, such as “short-term, long-term, operational and administrative and ensure the completion of tasks through people” (Wynn, 2008). If a supervisor fails to employ a leadership stance, instead employs a management stance, there are higher chances of risk to lose the effort and loyalty of the people. Personal courage expects a leader to be accountable for the health, education, well-being and development of his subordinates. Loyalty is a critical characteristic possessed by a leader. Being loyal to the people and looking out for their best interests; helps to seek training, education and opportunities for them (Wynn, 2008). Loyalty to the organization sometimes interferes with loyalty to the people. However, it is the responsibility of a leader to maintain a balance between the two. An effective leader must lead his people by example, which involves high level of professionalism. A leader must set a standard for his subordinates. Leaders must be passionate about their role of leadership as well as their profession (Wynn, 2008). Mike Wynn gave a detailed interpretation of the journey of leadership through simple and understandable vocabulary. The author explained each concept of leadership by illustrating a practical example from his experiences, which inspires the readers. Wynn dedicated each chapter of the book to a totally different chapter to ensure he does not miss out the important information. The author does not miss to mention the fact of how one can lead the subordinates as well as the bosses, which interests the readers. The book is a guide not only for the students, but also for professionals who wish to master their skills of leadership.
