In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo, Maria, and Joaquin have been the best of friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths, one thing remains unchanged. Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that a battling god and goddess have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle's outcome. The Book of Life is a wonderfully animated film about Dia de Los Muertos. It combines both Mexican folklore, ancient mythology, and pop culture. I believe this a brilliant film and that children of the ages 4 and up should be allowed to watch. Monola is a great example of, the courage to be yourself and follow your dreams, one of the many themes the movie possesses. Culture is very prevalent
Sandra Cisneros’s short story “Never Marry a Mexican” deals heavily with the concept of myth in literature, more specifically the myth La Malinche, which focuses on women, and how their lives are spun in the shadows on men (Fitts). Myths help power some of the beliefs of entire cultures or civilizations. She gives the reader the mind of a Mexican-American woman who seems traitorous to her friends, family and people she is close to. This causes destruction in her path in the form of love, power, heartbreak, hatred, and an intent to do harm to another, which are themes of myth in literature. The unreliable narrator of this story was created in this story with the purpose to show her confusion and what coming from two completely different
In an Author’s Note, an anonymous author figure explains that he traveled from his home in Canada to India because he was feeling restless. There, while sipping coffee in a café in the town of Pondicherry, he met an elderly man named Francis Adirubasamy who offered to tell him a story fantastic enough to give him faith in God. This story is that of Pi Patel. The author then shifts into the story itself, but not before telling his reader that the account will come across more naturally if he tells it in Pi’s own voice.
What is wrong with society? And what can people do about it? Society is plagued by hate, discrimination, and selfishness but it can be overcome by love, cooperation, and applying the concept of mind over matter. These questions and answers are provided by the ‘’I AM’’ documentary, where the director Tom Shadyac asked different religious leaders, authors, and historians to find solutions. Through the whole documental he uses these positive qualities of human beings as the three key themes as a cure to an unscrupulous society and to show humans have the power to change the world and make the planet a better place. The three key themes that seem to resonate throughout the documentary are the nature of humanity, the world’s ever-growing addiction to materialism, and human connections.
At the beginning of the story, the protagonist, Cleofilas, had an illusion that all romance is like the ones she had seen on television. However, she soon realizes that her relationship with Juan Pedro was

“What would I do, if I were Pat? How would I feel?” I kept asking myself while reading In Search of New Life chapter. I can only imagine how shocked, terrified and guilty she must have felt when Mohamed disappeared. Others were consumed with anger and embarrassment wondering whether they should support Mohamed’s decision to stay in the U.S. illegally or report him. How did Mohamed feel? Some threads in the chapter indicate that he had been planning to escape – making such a serious decision must have caused incredible anxiety and fear, but the discomfort he felt when he thought about coming back to his country was probably even greater. He was strong and courageous to make such a decision – the life in Sierra Leone didn’t spoil him, he had
Chapter one in the book Constructing a life Philosophy shows a variety of opinions on life philosophies. From what I understood from reading all four of the views was that they believe it wise for people to be flexible in the way we live our lives. I would like to discuss further what each of them had to say.
In 1983 Aharon Appelfeld published a work of fiction titled Tzili that closely resembled his own personal Holocaust experiences. This work of fiction revolves around a maturing teen who is alone and on the run during the Holocaust. In Tzili, Appelfeld brings to life his characters, which include Tzili, Katrina, Mark, and Linda. Throughout this literary analysis Appelfelds’ memoir Story of a Life will be used to access the parallels that exist between Appelfeld’s own personal experience and his fictional work Tzili.
Due to Pi’s devotion to all of his faiths, particularly Hinduism, not only changed how he thought about his current situation, but also changed how he would think about every single situation after in Martel’s Life of Pi.
In the novel life lessons:two experts on death and dying teach us the mysteries of life and living. The novel talks about many lessons such as
Life of Pi shows that humans and animals should do anything necessary to survive whatever challenges they face to live instead of just accepting death. Whatever ways that help one to survive are necessary, even if they compromise personal values, are vicious, or are wicked. Pi, a human; a hyena, and a blind man all fight to survive in a variety of ways that are examples of this thesis.
Karanvir Dhami Ms. Yu ENG3U March 7, 2011 Symbolism in Life of Pi In Life of Pi there are many literary devices used to present the different themes in the novel. The main literary device used in Life of Pi is symbolism. Symbolism is often used to represent an object to something else, either by association or by resemblance. Most of the names of animals, objects and even humans in this novel have a symbolic meaning. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, symbolism such as pi’s name, the colour orange and the algae island, are used throughout the novel to provide Pi with protection to help him either survive or overcome his emotional pain. The mathematical pi is undefined, infinite and unable to be understood, just like Piscine Patel.
The abstract idea of life cannot be explained by such simple ideas as being animated, breathing, or speaking. Ordinary machines in this century can perform all of these basic functions. The quandary with defining death is not as abstract and elusive as that of life. The problem of defining life and death has plagued philosophers and the religious bodies for thousands of years for one reason; each philosophy or religion has tried to define the meaning of life and death from only their certain perspective. The seemingly appropriate approach to this problem would be to understand the ideas presented in various philosophies and religions and through this knowledge create a new definition for each idea of life
2. Why is this rickshaw driver from India so happy if he barely makes enough money to survive every day? The main reason I think this man is as happy as the average American, is because he does not know any other way of living. For example: people were happy before Ethernet existed, but now what happens if you take the Ethernet away from someone that has used the Ethernet? They will probably go mad. It doesn’t surprise how happy this person is, and I think hes the envy of a lot of people. He is strong, healthy and has a family that supports him. I have seen a lot of rich people that have all the money in the world, but they don’t have health, and they say they would give all their money for health if they could.
