If an animal looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and acts like a duck, then it is probably a duck. The same goes for books. If a piece of literature looks and sounds like gothic literature, then it is probably gothic literature. However, every piece is unique and different in their own way. For example, “The Book of Blood” is a gothic piece of literature which incorporates elements found in works such as The Castle of Otranto and others. In this story, the characters come in contact with the dead, which is a supernatural aspect because the dead occupy a different dimension than humans do. For example, “The Book of Blood” states, “The ether-faces of the dead were quite clear in front of her. She could see the profundity of their suffering and she could sympathize with their ache to be heard” (8). Then, during the course of the story, the dead begin to attack the trickster boy. In this dimension, humans do not come into face-to-face contact with the dead. Also, the dead does not attack humans. Therefore, this occurrence is not natural. In the supernatural aspect of “The Book of Blood” relates with Dracula. This story relates to Dracula because this book is centered on a supernatural being. For example, in Dracula it states, “But my very feelings changed to repulsion and terror when I saw the whole man slowly emerge from the window and begin to crawl down the castle wall over that dreadful abyss, face down with his cloak spreading out around him like great wings” (Chapter 3). This statement is not the most supernatural aspect of Dracula, however, it gives a very good idea of the supernatural features in the book.
