The image of a woman’s body has always been the center of attention to society all over the world. Globally, anyone who thinks of a woman’s ideal body, immediately thinks of a thin body with no cellulite and no imperfections, a small waist and soft skin, between other descriptions that are considered “hot” and “good looking”. Females often feel pressured to attain society’s highest expectations because it is easier to fail them, rather than meet them. The music and other industries, like advertisements constantly portrays an ideal and beautiful body for women, in most cases thin. Once their body image is not good looking enough, society begins to look at them differently or try to “help” them by telling them to get fit or make an effort to look better and in other cases they decide to make fun of them. Piercy says, “She was advised to play coy, exhorted to come on hearty, exercise, diet, smile and wheedle” (13). This implies that society only thinks about the expectative they have about a woman’s body and refuse to accept another different than theirs. The author claims the girl was advised to exercise and diet as if they had any control over her body image. Comments like these would make anyone feel insecure about themselves. Usually when people tell a person to go on a diet or exercise, it is because they are saying a person looks fat and are not meeting their beauty standards. The poem helps us see society’s body’s expectation of a woman can be extreme and can make a female feel insecure and maybe not a part of society for not fitting in their body standards. Likewise, in “Silenced Beauy: An exploration of culture, beauty and the therapeutic alliance” the authors of the article manifest their feelings about their body image and other beauty standards and how society made them feel left out and insecure. “Never Just Pictures” by Susan Bordo, is about how today’s society is influenced by the mass medias unrealistic ideas of how they are supposed to look. In this essay, the author breaks down the images being showcased by today’s culture concerning the aesthetics of the female body. Bordo also talks about how what was considered ‘beautiful’ or ‘perfect’ before has changed. Lately, the world has been on a craze to look like the air brushed model in the picture. Bordo explains how a lot of people are becoming more obsessed with their physique, and depending on looking thin to make them happy, instead of focusing on being happy and healthy.
The book Low Fat Love addresses a variety of sociological issues, one of which is body image (Leavy, 2011). While an individual may hold his or her own personal body image, that image is often shaped by social forces outside the person’s control. That is, standards set by society about gender, also known as gender ideals, influence how individuals view themselves. Gender ideals become internalized through the process of socialization. It is when individuals accept the messages of what it means to be a man or woman in their society and learn the associated norms that they begin to acquire a social identity (Ferrante, 2014).

This is because the physical shape and image of male bodies have not changed over the history. From the ancient Greek until the modern era, the masculinity is the predominant stereotype for men. Masculine traits include courage, independence and assertiveness (Judith, 2001; Murray, 2000). In contrast to the male body, the female figures have been varied over time and across culture. According to Positive and Negative Body Image, a negative body image develops when a person feels his or her body does not amount up to family, social, or media standards. Many people feel as if they don’t measure up to the belief of others. People who have accepted the way they look often feel good about their image and would be considered to have a positive body image. One’s appearance may not be measure up to how their family expects it to be or how it is perceived to be in the media, but once people learn accept and be proud of the way they look they’ll be better off in the long run. When a person is measured against the standards of the beauty seen frequently in the media and it doesn’t compare to how they feel about themselves it become discouraging. Having said that, long-lasting negative body image can affect both your mental and physical health which could lead to eating disorders down the road.
