Body Image "Just Be" is a familiar slogan to the current American culture. It is the slogan of a well-known designer, Calvin Klein, who, in his advertisements, supposedly promotes individuality and uniqueness. Yet, Calvin Klein, along with all known designers, does not have overweight or unattractive people on his billboard ads, on his runways, in his magazine pictures or on his television commercials. Moreover, the movie, music and the mass media corroborate with the fashion industry in setting and advertising a certain standards for a physical ideal of a human body. Therefore, the commendation of such look and shape commercializes unhealthy body image and procreates eating disorders. Unfortunately, at present the commercialism of a perfect body is encountered by almost everyone on everyday basis. The media group that retouches images skews the “normal” body image of people through many of its outlets, including models in advertising and magazines, and actors in TV and movie productions. “The average model portrayed in the media is approximately 5’11” and 120 pounds. By contrast, the average American woman is 5’4” and 140 pounds” (Holmstrom, 2004). This statistic shows how the media manipulates consumers into believing that because they are not what the average model looks like, they are not living up to a certain standard which implies that they need to look like that to be beautiful. Bordo mentions celebrity names like Alicia Silverstone and famous dieting products like Citra Lean to introduce the “thin” trend in today’s popular culture. In a cross–sectional survey, “Exposure to the mass media and weight concern among girls,” participants reported how often they need fashion magazines; it was proven that those who read fashion magazines were twice as likely to diet and three times as likely to try to lose weight, than infrequent readers. The evidence suggests that exposure to unrealistic and unhealthy body images can influence young children’s perceptions of their body and therefore cause body dissatisfaction and low self esteem. In a meta– analysis of 25 studies, “The effect of experimental presentation of thin media images on body dissatisfaction,” revealed that viewers were more negative after watching thin media images than after watching average sized or plus sized models. The authors were trying to explain to the reader that viewers are heavily affected by what they watch on television. A study by Katzmarzyk and Davis, “Thinness and body shape of playboy centerfolds from 1997 to 1998,” show that there was a massive decrease in models’ body weights and measurements, with 70% of women being underweight and greater than 75% of the women being 85% of their ideal body weight. Because idealistic standards of beauty are raised, kids may grow up thinking that they have to look a certain way to be accepted. For the longest time, people have been worrying about the way they look, it's a feeling or occupation we were all born with. Whether it's male or female both genders have insecurities about themselves. Along with the fears of oneself, people also have to worry about the opinions of others. Today's society is all about the media and lately, people have been feeling really brave and aren't scared to tell people their opinions. You would think that women would be supporting each other and complementing one another, but instead they body shame each other and unfortunately, it's the same thing with men. Having this said what problems do men and women face throughout their life because due to body image issues?
Under society’s customs for decades, young women have found themselves immersed in the pressure and anticipation to have exemplary bodies. Nearly every young woman prefers to be slim, have a perfectly shaped body, that is beautified by applying pounds of makeup to their face but does not appear ridiculously overdone. As if keeping the perfect body wasn’t hard enough, our culture also forces girls into the forever expanding world of composition, however, body image is a surging subject for young girls. Advertisements and pictures of lean female models are all over. Young women are measured and perplexed by their physical appearances with attire intended to raise their physical structures; social media, magazines, the society, marketing campaigns, advertisements, and the fashion gurus add to a strand of excellence.
“A smile is the best makeup any girl can wear.” (Marlin Monroe) I had recently seen a Mattel commercial about a Barbie digital makeover mirror. The commercial showed a young girl with the digital mirror. In the mirror showed this young girl with makeup. Though the girl was not wearing makeup but it shows the young girl how she would look with makeup. My question to Mattel is what are they trying to show this generation? The Barbie digital makeover mirror appeals to young viewer’s appeal to desire to feel that wearing makeup well make them feel beautiful. It does this successfully, but it affects our next generations of young girls because it shows that with the digital makeover mirror girls will feel better about themselves.
To begin with, the media industry has the power to decide what reaches the public’s eye; therefore, they present to the public their versions of what “beautiful’ women should appear like. Accompanying unrealistic images of women, the media spends billions of dollars yearly to advertise the various techniques that eliminate body discontents such as dieting pills and exercising machines, and exploits female magazine reader’s insecurities. Whether magazine advertisements aid in the gradual depletion of body image or fail to impact it at all will be the purpose of this investigation, supplemented by a literature review and organized by a theoretical framework, to support a firm analysis.
“City officials cited evidence in The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing that more than 80 percent of 10-year-old girls are afraid of being fat, that girls’ self-esteem drops at age 12 and does not improve until 20, and that is tied to negative body image”- (New York Times) Teens everywhere are believing that they aren’t in shape or don’t look good enough towards others. These factors then create bad decisions towards social or health problems which are really bad. Adolescents shouldn’t allow social media’s pressure to define their perfect body image due to a detrimental perception. Everyone on this earth goes through puberty, is very unique in his or her own ways, and changing a body image could lead to harmful health problems.
Body image may be viewed as the way people see themselves and even imagine how they make look based off how they may feel about themselves. Yet it could also be viewed as the way other people see you. Body image, in medicine and psychology refers to a person 's emotional attitudes, beliefs and views of their own body (Positive and Negative Body Image). According to Positive and Negative Body Image, a negative body image develops when a person feels his or her body does not amount up to family, social, or media standards. Many people feel as if they don’t measure up to the belief of others. People who have accepted the way they look often feel good about their image and would be considered to have a positive body image. One’s appearance may not be measure up to how their family expects it to be or how it is perceived to be in the media, but once people learn accept and be proud of the way they look they’ll be better off in the long run. When a person is measured against the standards of the beauty seen frequently in the media and it doesn’t compare to how they feel about themselves it become discouraging. Having said that, long-lasting negative body image can affect both your mental and physical health which could lead to eating disorders down the road.
