Hidden Apparatus
Body cameras worn by police officers on patrol are a new trend in the law enforcement community. The small recording gadgets are being encouraged to be worn to help protect both the officer and the suspect or public. If for any reason something happens to the responding officer or if there is a conflict in stories between the suspect and officer, the small hidden device could possibly have video regarding the incident. If the officers’ camera does document something useful, then the video could become evidence and may even be a tremendous help to the trial.

The study revealed that excessive force incidents and complaints dropped fifty percent, and from the twenty-five excessive force complaints that did occur during the trail, seventeen of them occurred with an officer that was not wearing a body camera. The executed use of the apparatus has helped with a dramatic drop in accusations towards law enforcement, although it does not help eliminate the problem completely. The cameras are merely used for documentation of a situation and for giving the officer piece of …show more content…
The public wants to know where the data is being documented and any data should be deleted after a situation has been resolved. The documented material of victims in domestic violence or sexually abused minor should be erased and destroyed, or not be recorded at all. Some police departments during the trial of the body cameras asked the responding officers with body cameras to keep the camera off for certain situations. Although, in many circumstances, there have been many situations that should have never been documented and they should keep the footage confidential or delete it all together. Many people post things on their social medias, but if you think about it, they are being watched either way, with or without body cameras. In my opinion, we have no

In today 's society, one highly debatable topic is whether or not law enforcement agents should wear body cameras. Most cameras used by law enforcement agencies across the country record audio and video, therefore, the cameras see and hear nearly everything a law enforcement officer does. There are many advantages to law enforcement personnel using body cameras while on duty because it holds the officers accountable, is used to document the contact made between the officers and the victims and/or suspects, supports the “use of force” action, keeps the officers and citizens honest, and the videos can even be used for training for other officers.
Video Footage has the potential to expose officer misconduct and exonerate civilians whose actions have been falsely accused by officers. In the case of John Crawford III, going into his local Walmart, just wanting to spend quality time with his family roasting s’mores. Officers had over 200 video cameras showing he wasn’t doing anything wrong, but they refused to look at them. Even though he had an unloaded pellet gun that he picked up off the shelf. Why shoot, instead of tasering him. (Harvard Law Review N.A., 2015). Even with some witnesses around that still didn’t stop New York Police officers from using excessive force on Eric Garner. His death was recorded, and the officers were indicted. There are many cases where officers are accused of excessive force such as PEOPLE vs ATKINSON. In cases such as this, there are officers stating force was necessary and defendants saying that unnecessary force had been used. The use of cameras helps to determine without prejudice and protect all

The body worn camera has benefited both police officers and the general public.
Body Cameras in Modern Society Body cameras are a serious debate in modern society. They provide insight to a crime scene, and without them police brutality is common. Police body cameras are very important to provide a just jury system, and justice for those who have lost loved ones especially. Body cameras, in certain cases for the jury, could have been the difference between winning or losing the court case. Consider yourself as a family victim of assault, in a fictional scenario, the court would likely not be able to make a good judgement as to who is responsible for what, there was a police on the scene.
Body cameras can lastly, justify lethal force made by police. A man got his job saved after shooting a man and having a body camera filming, but first his bulletproof vest had to save him, this man would have lost his job if he did not have a body camera to justify the use of his gun. If someone tries to lethally harm you, you should have the right to retaliate against them, without losing your job. A cop got to keep his job after shooting a black teen as the teen tried to reach for the cops gun. All in all body cameras should be used to keep police safe and be able to keep their jobs.
Often throughout society police abuse their use of force. Police wearing body cameras were found to have had an seventy-five percent decrease in incidents of use of force. Body cameras are defined as “Tiny cameras that can be worn on the chest, shoulder or head” (Kon). Moreover, body cameras can increase “accountability on part of the police” (Kon). Body cameras help increase trust in police.
Body cameras in policing are still new, but more and more agencies are beginning to implement this technology into their line of work. At first police officers were very hesitant to wear these body cameras because they were afraid they would infringe themselves and give away their own privacy. Later, as body cameras were beginning to see more use in the work place, officers began to realize that these very own body cameras that they once thought would only cause themselves harm would actual prove to be useful in a variety of situations. Some of these situations can be citizen complaints, to even backing up an officers use of force. Body cameras can be the one sole thing that can give
Over the years there have been a large number of police brutality incidences reported in the United States. Unfortunately, there have been a large number of cases where the law enforcement officers have been at fault, but in turn, there have also been cases where the law enforcement officers have been falsely accused. In order to increase the public’s faith and trust in law enforcement, footage needs to be made available to, not only the press, but also the public eye with body cameras. Not only will these body cameras help prevent violence, but it will also show positive footage of good working law enforcement officers, and also hold law enforcement officers liable for their unjustified actions by being recorded.
It is alarming that 61% of officers say they do not report serious abuse that has been directly observed by fellow officers (“42 Shocking Police Brutality Statistics,” 2017). 84% of police officers have stated that they have directly witnessed a fellow officer using more force than what was necessary (“42 Shocking Police Brutality Statistics,” 2017). It is important to lower the amount of deaths caused by those who swear to serve and protect. Police body cameras will improve officer behavior by ensuring each and every officer is
Thesis statement: Though some might argue that the wearing of body cameras violate privacy, in fact the use of the cameras will minimize violence, show accountability, and a human side of policing.
