The Blue Period in the Themes of Great Gatsby

The Blue Period was during the 1900s to 10s where Picasso and other painters painted in darker colors that gave a gloomy dark feel to them. You can see dark colors and themes in The Great Gatsby after the death of Gatsby like the death of the American dream. Nick had his dreams crushed after the death of Gatsby and his views of New York and the city disappeared forever. The same can be said about Picasso and artist that same the darker side of the roaring 20s. From the prohibition and speakeasies to the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, the roaring 20s didn’t have the magic that people think.

Fitzgerald’s word choice changes after this event and Nick starts to change his outlook on his beloved city. In the film, the color changes to a dark blue and grey tint that strangely looks like a Blue Period Picasso painting. This drastically changes the film's look and feel to make the viewer feel bad for Gatsby's death. The cuts slow and the overall pacing is slowed to follow Nick and his understanding of Gatsby’s death and why no one seemed to care about him. Making the audience feel the gloom of the death of a dream.

Picasso during The Blue Period was heavily influenced by what happens around him. Right before the beginning of The Blue Period, Picasso heard of Carlos Casagemas suicide. Carlos was a good friend of Picasso and recalled “I started painting in blue when I learned of Casagemas's death”. Nick and Picasso share an interesting parial with the death of one of their friends.
