Ultima’s owl is a special creature with certain amazing powers. Ultima’s owl is a protector, a guider, and Ultima’s soul. The owl is seen almost everywhere in the story protecting Tony and Ultima from Tenorio and helping Tony with new challenges. The owl is one of the must important pieces in the book Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya.
The protection Ultima’s owl give Tony and Ultima is very important the owl gives an early warning. As it is Ultima’s soul, and relays messages and warnings. Especially when Tenorio was coming to take Ultima the owl Tony, “heard Ultima’s owl hoot a danger cry outside” (133). The owl was warning Ultima about Tenorio, and is like Ultima’s watch dog. The owl also attacks threats such as Tenorio the owl is a portrayer of the soul and “hurled itself on Tenorio, and the sharp talons gouged out eye from the face of the evil man” (140). The owl attacked Tenorio since he was a danger to Ultima and the whole family. The owl is the protector of the family, and helps Tony out especially in times of protection or need.

Ultima’s owl calmed Tony down especially when he saw Lupito’s death. Ultima’s owl sang a song, and tony, “listened for it’s song. My heart was pounding and my lungs hurt, but a calmness had come over the moonlit night when I heard the hooting of Ultima’s owl” (25). The owl relieves Tony of his fear and guides him back to his home, and his normal senses. Ultima sends the owl to guide Tony and is really watching over him. The owl also encourages Tony and helps him in times of worry or fear. When Tony was going to his first day of school he was worried and fearful of going to school. He was not confident, but when Tony heard and saw Ultima’s owl sing, “whoooo, whoooo. I took confidence from its song” (59).
