The question that may cause many people to think about itself is the relation of race and sports. My younger brother was not an exception. Today he came to me and asked why there are many black people in specific fields of sports, and here is my answer to his question. Due to evolution, Black people have some difference in their physiology compare to other races. These differences can cause them do better in sports. Some of the biology differences that black people have are Black people have narrower hips, shorter torsos, broader shoulders, smaller ribcages and longer limbs. The narrow hips will enable them to push the locomotive forces close to their center of body and this will put great amount of force into locomotion and will be less wasted …show more content…
Also black people have low body fat that also can be helpful for them in running. According to Sailor article “Muscle and tendon physiology also contribute to black “athleticism.” It is well publicized that blacks have a higher percentage of fast twitch muscle fibers and higher levels of glycotic and phosphogenic enzyme activity levels, when diet and activity levels are controlled for, which would provide an advantage in explosive, short-duration muscular exertions.“ Black people have short bellies as well; this is a great help for them for running. Since the muscles can be stretched and store energy that can be this energy can be retransferred during running that will cause them lose less energy. These are some physiological reasons that black people can do better in sports. Due to these biological advances they got with time, because of their genetic material that has been changed in evolution, they can do better in sport competitions in specific fields of sport compare to other races. However they do poor in some other sports such as swimming because of these differences as …show more content…
Many sports such as tennis and horse riding are expensive. However, running and soccer is more affordable for people to do. This enables kids all around the world from different races be able to participate and practice some sports. That is why there are many Africans who are running. For instance there are many poor people in Africa that cannot afford paying for their child to join different sport activities. As you can see there are many African athletes in soccer and running compare to other sports. Beside this, as we mentioned above, culture and physiology can help them get above other competitors in these sport
In a film of “Race the Power of an Illusion, Part I The Difference Between Us”, it talked about the differences of races such as skin, eye, hair color. However, in our genetic, the human is not very different than we think but we had a similar genetic code. In the 1950s, the athlete champions were all black, and they were much better than any other. Maybe because of that some people think there are different structure bodies than other races. In this case, I think it could make sense that black people have better body structure than white. However, it is the wrong stereotype about skin color. The skin tone is continuously changing, and the reason why a human has different physical appearances is that of different genes we have. Depends on the
In Odessa, an oil-rich town in West Texas, there is a line that separates the two races of blacks and whites. They called it “the American version of the Berlin Wall – the railroad tracks that inevitably ran through the heart of town” (Bissinger 91). The tracks are the symbol of the barrier, tension, and attitude that stand between the two races. To the Odessan whites, African Americans are often considered extraneous, with few hopes and dreams to follow. It is also a common part of everyday language to blurt out the word “nigger,” without ever categorizing it in a racist context. To escape the predisposed perception, the football stadium, where the night lights shine, is the solitary premises where blacks accepted as an identity, as well
In the article, "Between a ball and a harsh place: A study of Black Male Community College Student-Athletes and Academic Progress," by Horton, Horton, Jr, research was conducted about how black male community college student athletes and the relationship between their ability to do well in school, compared to other non-student athletes. In this article, I will be discussing the different parts of the research process that is used throughout the reading. In the following, I will be discussing; the research question, variables, review of literature, methods and design, results, and further research.
Like many Americans we watch sports on any day of the week football, basketball, tennis, soccer, hockey and golf and we root and shout for our favorite team. But what really stands out to me in sports is there are a dominate number of minorities playing professional football and basketball which is not a problem what people have to understand that most minorities in professional sports come from a long childhood of violence drugs, bad neighborhoods and tough living situations and as an African American living in poverty growing up its our goal is to play a professional sport and earn a huge salary playing the game we always wanted for a living.
Being able to see an African American athlete on T.V sounds unbelievable. A high percentage of the youth go through their entire childhood hoping and dreaming of becoming a legacy just like the people on T.V. Unfortunately, not everything they see on T.V is true and becoming like those people on T.V is nearly impossible. Therefore, the representation of African Americans in professional sports has had a positive impact in the trajectories of black adolescent’s academic readiness and pursuits. This is due to professional athletes serve as an example to young African American men. In addition, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) requires players to maintain a certain grade point average (GPA). Furthermore, African American athletes
Big time football happens in the south. A great deal of student athletes are recruited by predominately Caucasian institutions. Three of the biggest names in college sports Alabama, Auburn, and LSU are located in the south; these schools are all about recruiting the bigger, faster, stronger players which tend to be African Americans. Which brings me back to the quote stated previously “In the South they don’t care how close you get, as long as you don’t get too high;” because just like they went and grabbed the bigger, stronger Africans to come help build and work their plantation, they go and recruit the African Americans to play for their teams and build a legacy for their football teams. With modern day sports, they offer scholarships to
Sports such as footy and soccer have a special place in the national conscience, but following the recent event where a Port Adelaide fan was photographed wearing a Nazi swastika with his Power jersey, it is clear to be said that more work is required in order to stop racism in all sporting events by the Australian Government. This isn’t the first time where this kind of incident has happened though. Non-white footballers face racial abuse regularly on the pitch. Surely you big footy fans still remember the incident in 2013, where aboriginal footballer Adam Goodes was called an ape by a 13 year old girl as he went near the stands in a match against Collingwood. These kind of people do not deserve to be called a footy fan.
When looking at the topic of academic success of African American student athletes you need to look at all the factors involved. The problems that African American student athletes face are much the same that all African American students at higher education institutions face but the student athletes have other stressors that the normal students do not have. Such as In addition to the daily student routine (attending classes, going to the cafeteria, and participating in social events), student athletes also have their sport-related activities (practicing every day, visiting the athletic trainer for injury treatment, traveling for away games, studying team plays) (Watt, Moore 2001).
I like hard data and numbers. While I certainly enjoy theories and the beauty of being able to have different opinions, I also tend to lean towards the side of what seems to make the most sense. This topic we just discussed is not over with. Nothing is proven. Solid answers are not given and much more research still needs to be conducted. In my opinion, though, I don’t see how anyone could argue with the facts given and proven thus far. As Gideon Ariel, biochemist and former Israeli Olympic athlete said “I know that the American system is very sensitive to statements of black and white. But you cannot defy science. You cannot just say that day is night and night is day. These are facts. And I think it's to the advantage of the black athletes to be proud that God was on their side” (Entine, 2000). I don’t think that there is anything ethically wrong with believing this way. The color of one’s skin does not come into play here. I cannot help but to recognize the biological differences between black and white athletes. The problem is, too many people view these differences as a bad thing. There is beauty in being different. There is beauty in being innately gifted. God has given these people gifts. The gift of athleticism is not something to be ashamed of. Just because one is given these gifts, doesn’t make them lazy. Just because a person believes that one is born with the biological makeup to be athletic, that doesn’t mean that the
Ethnic Origin: Ethnic origin is a clear cultural influence on sports participation. The influences which this chosen cultural influence has on sports would be the amount of issues there are in sport surrounding racial hatred and discrimination. This group of people tends to participate in most sports these days but the sport black people for example would tend to participate in would be sports which require explosive speed and power and also height. Sports which require these things may include sprinting events such as 100m, basketball and boxing as these sports require a balance of speed, power and height. The reason black people participate in these sorts of sports is because they are genetically superior to most other humans with a different ethnic background in general at the specific sports. This may influence decisions in sports participation as other people of different ethnic backgrounds may become intimidated by the large amount of black people taking part in whatever sport they are participating in. People may not think they have much chance in their sport if
The location of a person 's center of gravity affects the speed that their feet are moving when they reach their final destination, the ground, thus resulting in either a faster or slower end time.(Rowan, 2010) Each step a runner takes is basically like falling except the athlete breaks the fall when their foot hits the ground, and they repeat the process again. The faster they are able to repeat the motion, the faster they reach their destination, which in most cases is the finish line. So the feet of an athlete with a higher center of gravity will hit the ground a lot quicker than someone with a lower center of gravity- a longer torso. (Rowan, 2010) The reason black athletes are so much faster, is in their belly buttons. The navel, or belly button, is the center of gravity of the body, and given two runners or swimmers of the same height, one black and one white, what matters the most is not the total height but the location of the belly-button, or center of gravity on the athlete.(News One, 2010) A black athlete’s shorter torso benefits them on the
N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Nov. 2015.) Furthermore it has been debated that African American are naturally more “athletic” than intelligent in comparison to white
There is a big social problem in the Olympic Games for Racism. They say that blacks dominant most of the sports at the games more than the whites. There have been studies shown that the genes in African Americans make them jump high and become fast sprinters. When there are eight blacks lined up in the Olympic 100 dash meters or play in the NBA all-star game they talk about their speed and natural jumping skills.
The course Run, Africa, Run! will outline the physiology of African people and students will compare the muscle composition of Africans to people of European, Asian, and Hispanic descent. Students will divulge into the eating habits, cultural customs, and landscapes of specific African nations and discover how their cultural landscape is interrelated with the speed and endurance of the people. Students will also conduct specific case studies on the political and geographic history of African countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, which produce some of the world’s fastest runners. The course will also focus on
The last couple class days we had, we went over racism. I am very familiar with racism, but hearing the lectures in class made me think deep about racism. The comments, questions, and all the concerns left me wondering how people get by everyday teaching people that racism is okay. Hearing that being a Caucasian and being racist is considered bad, but if you are a Caucasian that is racist that has friends that are colored then you are looked at is good just kills me. There is nothing good about being racist no matter what you classify yourself as.
