Hollywood does a great job with making movies and making the viewer believe that, that is what actually happened in real life. Even though some parts of a movie is correct about what actually happened, they like to exaggerate or add certain things that didn’t actually happen in real life. It makes the movie better or more interesting to the person who is watching the movie. In the movie “Black Mass” they do an exceptional job of sticking to true events. The movie shows how the most notorious gangster in America got away with so much and why the police never did anything for an extended period of time. Johnny Depp who plays the protagonist in this movie, and his name is James “Whitey” Bulger, who is a extremely aggressive person and also a …show more content…
The Winter Hill Gang is an Irish mob and was first created in the 60s by Howie Winter who was later arrested for horse fixing and bookmaking. At first the gang focused on horse fixing, loansharking, and bookmaking, but once Whitey became the leader they shifted their focus onto having more territory and making money. During the film the Irish mob didn’t like the Italian mob. Gennaro Angiulo was the leader of them, both gangs wanted territory and more vending machines. John Connolly who was a childhood friend of Bulger tries to convince Bulger to become an informant and Bulger says no, but then Bulger realizes all the good things that could happen if he did become an informant. Soon after Bulger becomes one he takes down the Italian mob and gains all the lost territory and he is able to do whatever he wants, because John Connolly would hide everything and do the best he could to not get Bulger in trouble. A lawyer named Fred Wyshak came in and started investigating Bulger’s file and noticed that there were accusations that were expunge. There’s finally a warrant arrest for Bulger and he goes on the run for years, but the rest of the gang ends up getting caught and arrested for their crimes that they had done. Bulger was caught in San Francisco on a tip someone gave to the FBI. The Winter Hill Gang diminished in numbers and still in active and doing illegal things today but not to an extent of what Bulger had been
The movie “Black Panther” is a little bit different than most superhero movies produced by Marvel Studios. This movie is about a colored superhero named T’Challa from the African country Wakanda, who, after the death of his father, returns to claim his rightful place of king, but gets mixed up in a conflict that puts the fate of his people as well as the world at risk. This movie was released February 16, 2018, and has grossed over $400 million in the first two weeks becoming only the fourth movie to gross over $100 million in its second weekend, as well as becoming the fifth highest grossing Marvel movie ever (Izadi). Lots of this has to do with the fact that the movie is not the same as other superhero films that have come before it. Since
was held on July 23rd, 2014. This trial was held at the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse in Boston, MA. The trial was a jury trial, meaning that the people that decided if James was guilty or not were people brought to court by the United States of America. The judge of the trial was Denise Jefferson Casper, who at the time was forty-five years old, and worked for the court of law in this particular Boston district. The defense attorney for Mr. Bulger was a man named Hank Brennan. Hank Brennan was court appointed to Mr. Bulger, which means that he did not get his own attorney, but rather the state had to pay for him to have an attorney which is a law in the Sixth Amendment of the United States Constitution. The prosecuting attorney was Brian Kelly. Brian Kelly is now a very well known attorney in the country most notably for this trial. There were seventy-two witnesses called in against the like of James “Whitey” Bulger. One of the key witnesses against Bulger was going to be Stephen Rakes. This was a man that had seen Bulger commit his crime so he would have been a key witness. For some mysterious reason Stephen Rakes was murdered the day before he was going to get called in for the prosecution. Most of the evidence that was shown during the trial were murder weapons, about eight hundred-thousand dollars, more guns. The jury then found that only eleven of the nineteen deaths were due to him. The jury was unanimous and
It’s the beginning of the 1950’s. The citizens of Chicago are awaken by gunfires of mobsters of the “Chicago Outfit's,” lead by Al-Capone. Al-Capone was one of the best mobster kings in America, he got away with multiple murders, bootlegged alcohol during the prohibition era, along with numerous other court cases.
On September 3rd, 1929, James Joseph Bulger Jr. was born in Everett, Massachusetts. He was born into a large Roman Catholic, Irish-American family with five other siblings. It was not until later, he found himself at home in South Boston-- a place he would later reign with a bloody fist. The Bulger family was one of the low income families that was eligible and selected to reside in the Old Harbor Village projects. This area of Boston was dominantly made up of Irish and Italian low income immigrants. At this time, the Irish received a great deal of alienation and quickly found themselves piled into South Boston, or otherwise known as “Southie”.
Bootlegging, the distribution and dealing of an illegal substance, was becoming increasingly popular with liquor outlawed. Bootleggers would go to great extents to bring in liquor to their customers, prymarily speakeasy owners, as well as making sure they did not lose their customers to the other vaious gangs in the area. To ensure this threats were made to owners, gang wars began, and many murders occurred. (“Prohibition”) Those who became successful bootleggers became emmensly rich and powerful resulting in the expansion and flourishing of organized crime. Most organized crime leaders, gangsters, were wealthy and lived, at least on the outside, a sophisticated and exuberant life. In fact durning the Prohibition Era many people idolized bootlegging and gangs because it was a fast way to get rich and powerful. This would lead to an increase in the population of gangs. These gangs could be extremely dangerous and would kill many, ultimately causing an increase in homicide rates by 13% ("Organized Crime and Prohibition”). The reasoning behind the homicide rates going up is simple; as different mobs became more powerful in their areas and their range of illegal activities expanded they got more attention and this attention caused for rivalrys between different mobs and a higher police involvement in attempting to end the
With regards to Goodfellas, the film starts off by stating that the main character Henry Hill from as far back as he could remember always wanted to be a gangster, which is another term for mobster. Particularly, he started off working at the cab stand across the street at just about ten or eleven years old, and the cab stand was a place where mobsters worked. His parents who were working class citizens, and made lousy money were happy that he had found a job because his father had always believed that American kids were spoiled rotten. Furthermore, as he progressed into the field of a mobster living he was
One argument made by Structural Functionalists is that society should be a meritocracy. People should be rewarded based on their abilities. (Class notes, SOCI 201, Winter 2010)
These gangs came in from European countries through Ellis Island. They stayed in New York until they had enough money to move and then went to different booming cities across the United States. One of these gangs was a group of Jewish immigrants who realized that with the enhanced technology in Detroit and the booming industry that it would be a perfect place for a gang. This gang was the “Purple Gang”. Many gangs like the “Purple Gang” were just a group of immigrants who were all the same race who wanted to make money (the easy way). Most gangs were all related to each other or they new someone in the business. The had no education, didn't know how to speak English and still made violence and havoc among booming cities. But unlike the “Purple Gang” and other foreign “gangsters” there were people like Al Capone. Al Capone was an American born Roman Catholic who realized during the Prohibition Era with the rise of gang violence that he could control the whole industry. He became a co-founder of the Chicago Mafia and became known as “Public Enemy Number 1”. He truly started and was the head of gang violence throughout the country. He would kill people, people would
Imagine living in a world where crime ruled. A world where gangsters were more powerful than politicians, owned the police, and ran the city in whatever way they felt. They robbed whom they wanted and killed when they didn't get their way. Now stop imagining and realize that this happened here in the United States of America in the 1920's. It was run by an organization made up mainly of Italians called the Mafia.
We may not see this group but the mafia was big back in the day. The mafia was the leading group in criminal activity in the 1960’s(Darity). The mafia was a group that would make tons and tons of money off of drugs, robberies and murders. They would sometimes pay off cops to look the other way and if they didn’t get what they wanted they would use their firearms. With stronger and more enforced laws, many lives could have been saved.
How would you describe your inner mind? crazy? genius? They say that both are two sides of the same side. Through my experiences, I shape the world around me, developing a unique perspective from my worldview. When it comes to how I perceive reality I just summarize it in these six concepts: culture, meaning, self, self-fulfilling prophecy, and scripts, and self-serving bias. My culture defines me down to my very genetic core. It explains why I drive the way I do, how I talk, what is socially acceptable, why I react to things the way I do , why I attend LIU, etc.
La Cosa Nostra Perhaps one of the most poignant moments in American cinema is the closing scene in the film “The Godfather” when Don Vito Corleone’s son Michael takes over his father’s position... and one of the most unforgettable moments, a severed horses’s head lies bloody in a man’s bed. It is this tradition and brutality that characterizes the Mafia, a secret Sicilian society that lives and functions just as much today on American soil as it did and does still in Italy. To understand this organized crime, one must begin to understand how it came to be organized in the first place. During the medieval times in Sicily, Arabs invaded the land and native Sicilians fled and took refuge in the hills. Some of these refugees formed a
The brutal 1998 movie American History X, directed by Tony Kaye, follows former skinhead Derek Vinyard while he is trying to prevent his younger brother, Danny, from going down the same path Derek was led down. While leading a violent white supremacist cult and being a large part of many racial crimes throughout the L.A. area, Derek was sentenced to three years in prison for killing two black men who attempted to break into his truck. Throughout the three years, Derek learns that there are good and bad people in every race and becomes more open and friendly to those he believed he was superior to. After getting help in prison, Derek is released on parole and tries to cut ties with his old “brothers,” it is then that Derek realizes how much
According to Durkheim, Social fact or social phenomenon are the main subject matter of sociology. He said in one of his pieces that social fact must be studied distinct from the biological and psychological phenomenon. Social order is the trend of behavior being used to exercise power over another person. It has become rules and regulations that have been set up by some authorities to be obeyed by another group of people who are being undermined in a society, it is a situation that oppressed people and limits them from their liberties. When people go through these situations they cannot function the way they are supposed to function because they are limited by their freedom. These social orders are not only laws but rather certain norms created by the authority to put a whole race into a situation where they are very far from freedom of speech, movement, and knowledge. African Americans are an example of a race that has been through discrimination at workplaces, schools, community etc. They are one race which has been a label or put in a class where the situation will never permit you to climb the ladder of success. Although you might have all the certification, qualification, the best schools, etc. but the fact that you came from the poor class or the lower class, it becomes very difficult for the Caucasian people to give you the opportunity you deserve, because of this, the citizens of American have been grouped into different classes which are upper, middle, working,
The movie ‘’ black mass’’ is an action crime movie based on true story about Whitey Bulger, a drug dealer at the southern area of Boston. Whitey Bulger is the tangled criminal of the history of Boston. He was once sentenced to Alcatraz, but then released. When he came out of the prison, he formed a small gang called it the winter hill mafia. He wasn’t satisfied with just being small and in charge of drug dealing and organized crime in a small part of the city. He wanted to control the whole city. Soon he met one of his childhood friends who was an FBI agent, with whom they made a deal to give him immunity in exchange for information about the Italian mafia in the city. For him this was a win-win situation where he got the FBI to fight his enemies and protect him while he running his gang. After the mafia leaders were taken down, he was in control of the whole city and his crimes increased. A new FBI agent was hired to investigate Whitey Bulger. He found out about all of his crimes, his cooperation with the IRA and his murders. Soon he was ordered to the jail. Everyone was caught and sentenced by the FBI except him as he escaped for 12 years before he was finally caught. His brother was the mayor of Boston. He was not aware of his brother’s business and soon after Whitey Bulger was ordered to be caught, he resigned as the mayor.
