Biomedicine Personal Statement

When I first entered college, I had thought that I wanted to major in Biomedical Sciences. The reason being, I was diagnosed at the age of 7 with Type 1 Diabetes. I was tossing around the thought that I was interested, possibly, in having a career that involved my disease in it. From being a part of this compass program, I have learned about many careers. Even though I learned more of what I do not want to do, it has helped me narrow down to majors that I am more interested in. I was thinking of still having the possibility of entering the medical field, but I am unsure. Learning about the different careers in the medical field and visiting labs has shown me that it isn't something that I am interested as much as when I first enter college. While I do want to be involved with my disease, I’m not sure if I want to have a career with it, but it could still be a possibility.

Science is a field I am particularly passionate about and am pursuing as a career. This is because I believe the profound knowledge and insights science offers can best equip me to serve others through a career in health care. I came to this conclusion after taking my first college level biology course. For the first time, I became aware of the unimaginable dept and complexity of the world and ignited a burning fire within me to understand it all. As I continued to take additional biology and chemistry courses, I discovered the thrill that comes with deciphering the governing laws of life. This understanding has taken on a greater, personal meaning as I have learned how to apply science to daily life and share its benefits. Moreover, working with various masters of this admirable field has encouraged me to apply my own skills and what I have learned in health care.

When I think of medicine I think of diversity. The medical field contains a multiplicity of individuals, culture, and exchange; exposure to the Guatemalan culture offers a plethora of experience that allows me to build on personal growth, educational enhancements, and the opportunity to make a difference. The availability of this program through the Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine is a blessing as well as a prayer answered for the prospect to experience the world beyond the borders of the United Stares.

I decided to pursue medicine while I was attending high school in Kolkata, India and fell in love with biology. I enjoyed engaging with people and developing meaningful relationships. I was looking for a path that would provide me with the skills to help others, both in my home country India and abroad. I felt that medicine can offer me an enriched career with the perfect balance of scientific challenge, intellectual stimulation and personal collection. Surrounded by the Himalayas in West Bengal, India, medical school further inspired my intellectual curiosity and cemented my professional identity.

Biomed Academy at my high school will be the most contributing factor to attain my goal. This academy has changed my perspective about medicine career. I have gained tons of knowledge from BioMed academy in these high school years. This will help me to attain my goal, because the knowledge gained from this academy will help me to be a successful medical professional. The principle of Health Science, Health Science, CNA, psychology, Biology, and anatomy and physiology are classes that prepared me to be an eligible Pre-Med applicant. I have learned from the basic structures of the body to the complex structure of the body, and from classroom to hands-on experience at the rehabilitation center. Exploring various research opportunities on campus and summer internships have allowed me to shape what I want my future to look like. When the time approached to set my personal and professional goals, I made a conscientious decision to enter a field that would allow me to leave a positive impact on mankind, while adding to the current body of research. There is more that can be done by combining research and medicine, and additional steps I can take to enhance scientific advances. These convictions, coupled with my passion for medicine and science, were significant factors in my interest in becoming a physician-scientist, pursuing an MD-PhD. Picture opening up a box with over 1000 pieces belonging to a jigsaw puzzle, emptying the contents out on to a tabletop, and then being tasked with putting those pieces together to ultimately create a beautiful picture of the human anatomy. One can imagine the eye for detail, patience and thoroughness that would be required to complete such a task. As with any puzzle it is critical that the wider picture is envisioned at all times, as focusing on only one piece would effectively hinder any progress towards completion.

Myar Dandash Personal Statement Volunteerism and the passion of science reflect my interests in biomedical science. My interest in Medicine began in high school where I studied biology and chemistry classes that focus on many topics. I intended to continue studying biology in college as an undergraduate student. Everything I learned from these subjects brought my attention to continue studying biology in a detailed way. Applying to the biomedical science program at Rutgers University because it combines both concepts I like to study the most, which are science and the application of science in medicine and other health-related fields.

I have chosen pre-medicine because I have always wanted to work in a hospital helping people. I was first exposed to the possibility of working in a hospital because of my mother, who is a nurse. Whenever she would take me to work with her, I could picture myself working there, helping others.

Since I was a child, I’ve always had a strong interest in science. I remember receiving a telescope and microscope kit for my birthday one year, and it was the best gift I’d ever been given. That’s what truly sparked my passion for the field of science and, more specifically, the medical field.

My interest began in healthcare and science at a young age of around 22 years. I became interested in healthcare because of my curiosity and fascination with how the human body functions. I found myself seeking a gratifying career that would make a sustained positive difference in people’s lives. My first healthcare position was as a surgical technologist. I later obtained my associate's degree as a registered nurse through an online program approved in California.

My determination to study biomedical science originates from my resolve to help these people in need. One way I could do this is by combining my interest in engineering which stems from my father, as well as my interest in medicine to enter the field of biomedical science and work in a research laboratory, developing new techniques that enable medical workers to explore the different pathologies of diseases

My interest of learning and having a career in the health field started since I was a very young age. When I was growing up my parents and their friends had some type of job in the health field. I remembered seeing my mom and her friends come out of the hospital in their scrubs wanted to be like them. I also remembered seeing pictures of my dad interacting with patients on holidays and listening to the stories that my mom had working in a pediatric center. During my childhood, the more I saw all of my family members and friends accepting jobs in the health field, the more I wanted to be like them. In high school, I began volunteering in hospital departments such as obstetrics and gynecology and in nursing homes interacting with the elderly

My interest started in elementary school, because of the teachers who enhanced my passion for science. In elementary school, I never thought about turning my passion into an actual career; that didn’t happen until high school. Science always intrigued me, from the never-ending science fair projects to research projects. Georgetown University’s Masters’ program in Biotechnology/ BioScience will continue to enhance my passion for science, but will also enhance my other passion in health related professions. Throughout my life, I loved science and health, but more so, the satisfaction of putting someone’s well being before my own.

One of the crucial moments in my life was the decision I had to take; as to what I was going to do next in life. Having completed my Advanced Level in 2013, I realized that it was not the end of my career as a student. I needed strong academic foundation along with other soft skills to meet the challenges and survive in this commercial world as a successful individual. In view of these thoughts, I was unable to make a firm decision as to what my career direction would be. After a month or so of various discussions with my parents, friends and other learned people I was able to reason out the best choice for me.
