When I was a freshman, I took an engineering class not knowing anything about engineering. My teacher, Mr. Chubb, was also a mentor. He asked us to research the different types of engineering to see which field interested us. When I read about biomedical engineering, I knew that was the type of engineering I'd like to do. It includes designing robotic prosthetics to help people with physical disabilities overcome their challenges. Mr. Chubb encouraged us to join our school's robotic team to design and compete with robots. Competing was fun and exciting. From then on, I knew engineering was for me. This will be my 4th year in robotics. Engineering teaches me new ways to solve problems. San Antonio is home to many retired and wounded …show more content…
They paid with their own money to help anyone in need. My parents always taught us not to take what we have for granted and to appreciate our family, friends and possessions. I now serve through different organizations I am a part of. As a Girl Scout, I help clean unkempt cemeteries. Through H.I.S. Bridge Builders, I help feed and clothe people in underserved communities. I have also served as president of the junior sorority of the San Antonio chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho. As Rhoers, we make care packages for the elderly in nursing homes, visit homes for teenage mothers, partner with other organizations to feed thousands of people with Thanksgiving dinners, and do Christmas performances for disabled children. In our robotics club, I visit elementary and junior high schools demonstrating and telling students about robotic engineering. I have big goals. I will succeed.
Before I was even born, the odds were against me. I was supposed to have disabilities but look how I am doing. I'm making A's and B's and in the National Honor Society. While my family always believed in me, I now have teachers and counselors who do too. I want to help others with disabilities lead a normal life. In college I want to help research and design robotic prosthetics that provide more natural movements and the sense of touch. I have big goals. I will achieve them
Some family have stereotypical ideas about disabled, but for Amy Purdy and her family that motivate them to live their lives beyond their limits. Although, she lost some parts of her body. For example, she lost both her legs below the knees, the spleen, kidneys. Unfortunately, she became unable to hear in her left ear. Another person who born with disability, Maysoon Zayid which is cerebral palsy. However, she did not give up for this so she worked hard and persevere to get a scholarship which was from Arizona State University. From Amy Purdy and Maysoon Zayid, we learn that facing problems forces us to get creative, and we should be optimistic when we want to change a critical situation.
I am very much interested in the field of engineering and hope to pursue a career in engineering sometime in the future. Although I haven’t decided which branch of engineering I want to pursue yet, my experiences as an engineering magnet student at Wheaton High school and the different engineering programs I am a part of have ignited within me a passion for engineering.
I have been interested in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) for as long as I can remember. In school I received many more opportunities to broaden my horizons. As soon as I found out about it, I joined the Robotics team. My experience being a part of this team has been quite crucial to my decision about what I want to study in college. Robotics made me realize that Engineering is a very exciting field. The countless problems and the time crunches are quite invigorating. I was the Programming Captain in my junior year and I am currently the Robot Manager of the team. The courses I took throughout my high school career have also been crucial to my decision. I
Throughout my entire life I’ve gone through numerous troubles & tribulations. Certain people take pity on me & think that my quality of life is lesser than their own. I believe that my disability barely hinders my life. And if it does interfere with my life, then I perseverance & then achieve my goals. I believe that through hard work & persevere anyone could achieve their goals.
When I first found out about Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), I believed it would be a perfect opportunity for me. TJHSST is a magnet school to improve academics in science, technology, and mathematics. Science and math have always been my favorite subjects. I enjoyed having tasks to analyze and comprehend challenging questions. I was also interested in the fields of technology since I liked working with electronics and finding out about new robots that help make our lives easier. Ever since I joined after-school robotics programs, I desired to become a robotics engineer. I have enjoyed watching videos on robots, as I found them appealing since kindergarten. In addition, my father is an information technology
Overall, people with disabilities can be just as successful as you and me they may just need a little more assistance and time to do it. This goes with physical education and normal classroom education. Their goals may be different than ours, but they are still valuable and can achieve their own goals. Our society may have preconceived perception about people with disabilities but with many of the individuals I have worked with prove this
My love for programming and engineering began in 6th grade, the year I joined the robotics club. Ever since then, I’ve been building and coding robots and designing a couple of games. Now, my interests have grown to a point where I see it as a potential profession. I intend to get more engineering experiences and to get a surplus education at the Governor’s STEM academy at Landstown. I am applying to this academy as there are so many different programs to use skills and feed interests. Competitions and clubs will give me more practice in teamwork, troubleshooting, and the entire engineering and design processes. As a result, I hope these will prepare me for my career, if I continue with it. To be a good programmer, you have to know what you’re
Hi Charlotte: Despite your physical disability you are an inspiration to many. Even though you are limited in mobility, you make it up in your motivation to achieve. I believe you should start to gather information for your
I had not thought much about people with a disability. But, once I read Cycle of Hope, I realized my life can change in an instance. People with a disability are very determined and strong-minded. People with a disability that are confided to a wheelchair can carry out anything that they put their mind too. Just because someone has a disability, it doesn’t mean they can’t leave their life to the fullest. They can live a normal life just like me, even though they are in a wheelchair. With today’s technology, they can drive a car, live own their own and enjoy their everyday life. Disability people can hold down a full-time job and live on their own. I think someone with a disability is very strong-minded and they are determined to carry
To be a biomedical clinical engineer there a lot of things that has to be accomplished. The roles of being a biomedical clinical engineer is that you design and build sensor system that can be used for diagnostic tests, such as the computers used to analyze blood, develop computer systems that can be used to monitor patients. There are some programs that I can attend such as a master or bachelor’s degree program. During this job there are some non-educational requirements that you have to inhabit for instance, you have to stay focused, and your hands need to be clean as always. I choose this career because I get to work in the hospitals or any health care facilities and I get to work with medicine. Some required personality traits is to be
How my Career Path Affects People with Disabilities . I have always dreamed of being in the medical field. Throughout my high school years I have looked into many jobs in the health field. My senior year I finally decided that I was going to major in Nursing, so I could become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I will strive, and I will reach my goal of becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.
Self-determination for all people is important, and some overlook this fundamental right when individuals experience disability, potentially only seeing the disability, not the person who experiences it. I am passionate about person-centered support, believing that person who wants or needs services has the most important voice when developing care plans. Individuals experiencing disability have the right to choose the life they would like build and have the supports they need to do so in a healthy and safe manner just as any other member of the community would. This includes choosing where they would like to live, the people they want surrounding them, and the vocations or interests they enjoy. In my professional life, it has been a fulfilling
As a highly motivated and hardworking individual, who has recently completed their SQA Highers. Seeking a place within the biomedical and medical courses to build upon a keen scientific interest and start a career as a pharmacist. At an early age, I have embraced commitment, dedication and perseverance, I experienced various challenges, instead of moving towards fear and anger I learned to appreciate the responsibility to move in harmony towards the truth and diversity. I have a compassionate personality which is complemented by a genuine love of science and discovery. I am a self motivated, determined individual and I look forward to the social and academic challenges of university. I am aware of the demands of a biomedical career but my
Don’t let your disabilities tell you that you can’t. Yes, disabilities make things a little harder, but there is nothing that can stop you from doing what you set out to do. By now, you probably guessed that I have a disability, but it’s not the kind that you think it is. My disability is special. It took me a long time to realize that, but I couldn't image my life without it now.
There is no one I admire more than someone who strives to overcome their disabilities, as these individuals often achieve feats that are higher than those who do not have any disabilities at all. After starting college, I discovered that I also have a passion for researching cures and genetics, which was partially due to my Biology class. On one occasion while watching a movie where genetics research improved the vision of a woman with macular degeneration, I became so moved and touched that I began to cry. Researching and finding cures that improve the quality of people’s lives would be my ultimate dream. Although, I am not entirely sure which career to pursue, I do know that I will be the happiest in a position that helps others, whether that is merely assisting someone to open a door, showing someone I care, or in some small way bringing a smile to someone’s
