Pleasure is what people describe as the feeling of being happily satisfied. Many people find pleasure in different forms. Though what most people consider to be a large form of pleasure is sex. For some individuals, abnormal sexual behavior can be described as an issue and can eventually lead to hypersexuality in a person, which can increase the chances for addiction. Psychologists also, often describe hyper sexuality and sex addiction as compulsive sexual behavior, which is a disorder where and individual experiences high amounts of sexual urges or activity, fantasies, and other uncommon behaviors sexually. There are a variety of causes of sex addiction, whether it is biological, psychological, or social. In addict’s genes they could be susceptible to impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, depression, or anxiety. Hormones can be a driving factor to cause sex addiction. High levels of testosterone and estrogen can increase the libido. Environmental elements from early-childhood, like abuse or exposure to sexual activity or sexual content. Sex addictions are often caused by someone’s state or mind, or mental health. Anxiety, depression disorders of the personality, and lack of impulse control. Also, people who suffer from bipolar disorder tend to take part in excessive and precarious sexual behaviors while having their “manic” episodes. Rejection from past relationships can cause unhealthy ways to satisfy oneself sexually. Social isolation can increase the chances of a person finding unusual ways to sexually please themselves. Lastly, sex addiction can be caused by learned behavior. Children and adolescents watch and learn from others; mainly their parents. If a parent or close group of friends frequently views pornography or shows an excessive interest in certain sexual activities, then they can learn the unhealthy behavior and can lead to a possible addiction. Sex addiction is also not in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM-5. “Gambling disorder” was eventually changed from an impulse control disorder to a behavioral addiction, but sex addiction is considered to be a sexual behavior that goes beyond the normal sexual behaviors in society by many researchers. These researchers claim there is no evidence to support that the term “sex addiction” has any relevance or proof that sex can be an addiction. (Griffiths. 2015.) But, these people are far from right. Sex addiction has similarities to people addicted to drugs. The similarities between the two addictions is that they both effect the brain and rewards the brain with dopamine. Dopamine is released when people satisfy their needs for survival or reproduction. Drugs can stimulate an individual with the release of dopamine; this acts like one of the satisfying needs, causing a person to become addicted. Sex can also, stimulate an individual each time they engage in the unusual or excessive sexual behaviors, causing them to rely on these sexual acts. Dependency is also, a consequence to both addictions which can ruin someone’s life in countless ways. (Sex addiction symptoms.

Sex addiction is a behavioral addiction that I consider to be a true addiction. According to our textbook, addiction is characterized by the following: compulsion, loss of control, continued use despite adverse consequences, and distortions in normal thinking (p. 359). I think that sexual addiction falls under all of those characteristics. Sex addiction involves compulsion, whether that means having sex with multiple partners or just having sex with one partner excessively, it can be classified as a compulsion because the overwhelming desire to have sex is there and there can be obsessive behavior associated with seeking and obtaining it. Sex addiction involves loss of control because the person that is obsessing about sex may become so enthralled by the notion that they go out and have sex with someone or something that they would not normally do. Sex addicts continue to involve themselves in risky situations even with adverse consequences,
There are three levels to sexual addiction as described by Carnes in “Out of the Shadows”. The three levels are as follows:

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s introduction to “The Scarlet Letter”, The Custom House introduces the reader to the narrator who bears a likeness to Hawthorne himself. Similarities between the two include their occupation in the custom house, being descendants of Puritans, having an interest in writing, and also being native to Salem. The narrator in the introduction describes the custom house, his work there, the employees, writing in general, but the most significant event in this introduction was his discovery of an unusual package, the contents in it being the scarlet letter an “A”, and records that date back to the seventeenth century in the Puritan community. After being dismissed from his job the narrator felt compelled to write about this discovery. Bringing the commencement of the tale, the first

Prior to venturing into the depth of sexual addiction, defining addiction seems like a logical step. Working through various dictionary definitions and real world applications, a working definition of addiction; a repeated and continuos behavior demonstrated despite negative outcomes (Hyman 1994). Behaviors that can also be a result of one or more neurological impairments (Hyman, 1994). Sex addiction becomes an overriding power in a person's life and takes it out of their control. Their behavior deviates from the norm, but in such a way that it is unnoticeable by relatives or loved ones because it is so secretive. Typical actions of a sex addict include: compulsive masturbation, multiple affairs outside of a marriage, consistent use of pornography, practice of unsafe sex, sexual anorexia, multiple anonymous partners, phone or cybersex, sexual massages, escorts, prostitutes, and prostitution (2). There are also manifestations within the act of sex itself
Prior to the death of Mr. Collins father, his consumption of Internet pornography and sexual chatting was not considered remarkable. He appeared to be able to function sexually while masturbating and during sexual intercourse with the partners in his life prior to this life-altering event. Mr. Collins expressed a relatively normal desire for sexual contact as a teenager as well as desire to couple with partners his age in traditional ways, but after the death of his father, what normally produced the arousal necessary to ejaculate while masturbating and having sexual intercourse, no longer appears to have had the desired effect. It is at this time that it appears that the symptoms of depression began to manifest in Mr. Collins life, depressed mood, decreased interest or pleasure, change in sleep, change in activity, and concentration. As these symptoms manifested, it appears that the indicators of Hypersexual Disorder began to develop; excessive masturbation, obsessing about sex to the point that it interfered with his life, spending significant time planning their sexual activity, frequent viewing of pornography or use of sexually explicit websites or other online services including adult chat rooms, frequent one-night stands with strangers, staying emotionally detached from sexual partners, frequently engaging in paraphilias, and inability to stop despite the consequences.
In this time period, there are many different disorders and illnesses that go unnoticed, and unknown. Society creates stereotypes about illnesses such as obsessive compulsive disorder, clinical Depression, and many other mental afflictions. Another that seems to remain controversial and misunderstood is sexual compulsive behaviors. Many see it as an excuse to act a certain way, or think a certain way; in reality it is a serious mental disorder that can cause devastating effects on the people that are consumed by them and the people who are around them. Something that is however, known about sexual compulsive behaviors is that there are certain things that can emotionally damage a person and cause them to have these behaviors. The three

“Addiction is a brain disease expressed in the form of compulsive behavior,” says by Alan Leshner in his article, “Addiction Is a Brain Disease” featured in the book Drug Abuse: Opposing Viewpoints. Addiction has a variety of meanings depending on what your viewpoint of addiction. According to dictionary.com, the concrete definition of the word addiction is, “the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.” Basically various doctors and therapist consider addiction to be a genetic disorder. “Provocative, controversial, unquestionably incomplete, the dopamine hypothesis provides a basic framework
