Pierre Fauchard, a French dentist, revolutionized the dentistry world in the eighteenth century. The origination of the modern dentistry can be linked back to his career and home life. Notable contributions had been made to the development of the dental profession. In the 18th century, Fauchard published a textbook, Le Chirurgien Dentiste, which detailed several dental techniques and dental procedures. Fauchard was recognized as the leading center for the dental field, the father of modern dentistry . Although Fauchard was of French origin, most of his ideas emerged in America and greatly impacted the establishment of dentistry there. He took away the older views of hidden secrets and engendered a epoch of accessibility and knowledge-based research. Pierre Fauchard made several contributions to the dentistry field in the 1700’s which caused him to be named the father of modern dentistry
Fauchard made several contributions towards the dentistry field, especially through the advancements in dental instruments. In the 1800’s, there was an uprising of palatal defects. In the human body, the soft palate helps produce the sound required for speech and language. Several issues such as speech problems and nasal regurgitation was resulting from this oral malformity. This caused functional, beauty, and societal distress for patients. The blueprint and invention of oral device to restore sections of the palate missing due to congenital defects or lost through or trauma, has been a

I have seen it every time I have gone to the dental office. I have had this artifact used on me but I’ve never used it myself. Every time an air-driven handpiece is used on me, I feel a very uncomfortable sensation in my tooth. This artifact reminds me of a drill and is also known as a dental drill. Dentist uses this “drill” in order to remove cavities, tooth decay, and plaques. I personally believe the people who invented the air-driven dental handpiece created it in order to remove
1. In the articles "Where Are All The Dentist"? and "History Of Teeth" by Kristin Lewis proves that there were many problems with dentist over a long period of time. The first quote proves that having bad dental care caused deaths. "Dejed died of a bad tooth" (Lewis 13). This proves that having bad teeth in history caused many deaths to people. Bad teeth caused deaths because dentists back in time did not have the right tools to fix a tooth problem so the dentist could not fix the problem. So they patient had to live with the bad tooth witch later then caused deaths. Another quote from Lewis also proves that money was a big issue witch caused bad dental care. "Many Americas cant go to the dentist because of the cost" (Lewis 17). This also proves
Although modern dentistry dates back to the 1700 archeologist have provided evidence of dental treatment from thousands of years ago. A French dentist, Pierre Fauchard also known as the “Father of Modern Dentistry”. In 1728, he published a book, The Surgeon Dentist, which emphasized the importance of healthy teeth. He developed the first orthodontic treatment methods and devised a more advanced, less expensive technique for making dentures. Throughout the 1700s dentist thought it was best for diseased teeth to be and dentures be imbedded. Revolutionary War hero Paul Revere made dentures from gold and ivory. Former President of the United States, George Washington was said to have wooden teeth. While Dentures remained expensive for one-hundred and fifty years after Washington,
Although oral problems have been around since the “beginning of mankind” (SB 1), the work in the dental field is still changing today. Efforts of treating tooth decay date back to 2700 B.C in Egypt and ancient China. Archaeologists examined the jaws of skulls only
My interest in dentistry was sparked at a young age through my volunteer activities in Egypt, where I was raised. At 12 years old, through the Egyptian Federation for Boys Scouts, we visited a village in North Egypt. There I met people my age who were underprivileged, including Youssef. Something was wrong with Youssef's mouth, but I was afraid to ask him. When I returned home, I kept wondering what was wrong with Youssef and couldn't figure it out. Two weeks later, my mother took me for a dental checkup. I brought Youssef's picture, hoping the dentist could provide me with answers. He told me Youssef had a cleft lip and palate. He said it needed surgical intervention to be corrected and that these procedures are only performed in major medical centers, not in rural villages like Youssef's. I was intrigued by his explanation and asked him questions about the scope of
Health care has been an issue for the United States of America for multiple years. Dental care, a topic that does not get much attention because people believe it is trivial, plays a major part in people’s lives, particularly children. Gerard van Honthorst’s The Tooth Puller shows a dentist pulling a patient’s tooth with five observers watching. Van Honthorst shows how in awe or scared people are of the dentist. There is a negative outlook on dentists and dental care: people are afraid of the dentist giving them their negative connotation, while dental care only causes pain in many people eyes. There is a problem in the health care system and improvement in the system is needed because health care is a right for every citizen, especially dental care. The United States of America’s government should allow dental therapist to conduct the procedure that normal dentist conduct for free for children under the age of twelve. The government should fund the teaching, training, and employment of dental therapists to care for underserved people.
At the end of their service people were much aware of the oral health. They now know the importance of taking care of their oral health is very important to them. They can prevent getting cavities by brushing, flossing and taking sufficient amount of fluoride to reduce dental caries and other health diseases. They knew what was excepted of them at the dental office, and what to ask their
The field of dentistry has history dating back to 7000 BC and has continually changed and improved overtime through the influence of many intelligent people. The ancient cavemen of Pakistan received credit for the first documented drilling of teeth. Studies show that Pakistanian cavemen used asphalt and other creative treatments to fill cavities (“Dentistry”). This act of improving oral health laid the basis for further development and innovations in the field. Following the Pakistanian cavemen, the ancient Egyptians contributed to dentistry by creating the formula for one of the oldest recorded toothpastes. This mixture consisted of rock salt, mint, dried iris flower, and pepper. Scientists believe that this formula for toothpaste may have worked better than toothpastes developed during the 18th century (Monson). The French, the next
Our teeth are some of the most overworked bones in our body. We use them to grind, gnaw, crush, and pulverize food every day. Despite this workload, we still expect our teeth make us look fabulous when smiling for the camera. Imagine life without teeth. Imagine life with false teeth. Would we smile as much? Would we still enjoy our favorite foods? Let’s explore these questions further as they have played major role in my short career as a registered dental assistant.
Restoration of missing teeth, and fabrication of partial or complete dentures is the main objective of prosthodontics. However, in order to accomplish the task, the occlusion of the patient is necessary to be able to fabricate a successful prosthesis that suits him/her best. Since keeping him/her attached to the dental chair is not possible every time a record is needed, a device that could represent the patient was crucial. That’s how in the 19th century the concept of the articulator was given birth, and the first articulator was fabricated.
Jumping forward many years we come to World War II, the end of the war came due to Adolf Hitler committing suicide by shooting himself and his wife Eva Braun biting into a cyanide pill. Many believed that this was a cover-up and they had actually escaped. Pieces of Mr. Hitler’s mandible were found soon after investigation had started and his dentist confirmed that Adolf was in fact deceased. Finally there is the infamous Ted Bundy case that involved the examination of a bite wound on a woman’s rear that matched Mr. Bundy’s dental profile. Along with the cases that furthered knowledge man has in the field of odontology are the technologies and the advancements they have went
The history of orthodontics has been intimately linked with the history of dentistry for more than 2000 years.[1] Dentistry, had its origins as a part of medicine. According to the AAO (American Association of Orthodontists), archaeologists have discovered mummified ancients with crude metal bands wrapped around individual teeth.[2] Malocclusion is not a disease, but abnormal alignment of the teeth and the way the upper and lower teeth fit together. The prevalence of malocclusion varies,[3][4] but using orthodontic treatment indices,[5][6] which categorize malocclusions in terms of severity, it can be said that nearly 30% of the population present with malocclusions severe enough to benefit from orthodontic treatment.[7]
Dentistry has a long and complex history, with the earliest evidence of it being performed being dated back to 7000 B.C. from the Indus River Valley Civilization. Later, an ancient Sumerian text mentioned “tooth worms” around 5000 B.C., and from 2900 - 2700 B.C,Egyptians began drilling teeth to drain abscesses. Etruscan and Greek physicians further progressed dentistry by pioneering dental prosthetics and writing texts that contained information about dentistry. The Roman Empire later conquered the Etruscans and absorbed some of their culture, including dentistry. In fact, the Roman medical writer Celsus wrote on many topics pertaining to dentistry. In Asia, although the Chinese did use silver amalgam fillings as early as 200 B.C., a proclamation from the Qu’ran that prohibited body mutilation prevented the advancement of dental surgery for many years. The first book to focus solely on dentistry, Little Medicinal Book for All Kinds of Diseases and Infirmities of the Teeth by Artzney Buchlein was published in Germany in 1530. Known European dental achievements were mostly French and English in the 16th and 17th century, with James Hunter, an English surgeon, pioneering the idea of teeth transplant. When the English began settling the United States, many of them brought along their dental practices. Notable American dentists during the colonial period include Isaac and John Greenwood and Paul Revere. In the 19th century, America was a hotbed for dentistry related
With fondness, I will always remember when I first began to consider dentistry as a future profession. My childhood mentor Dr. Spigner was having a weekend workshop for his patients, at this moment, I was exposed to dental education at its full capacity. While there we learned how to properly brush and floss our teeth, the benefits of tooth hygiene, and how fillings are applied to adolescent teeth. After learning these helpful tips, I wanted to share my newfound information about the importance of
