Gates saw himself spending most of his time on a computer. Allen had spent two years at a university, but he dropped out. Allen had gone to Boston, Massachusetts, to work for Honeywell while still staying in touch with Gates. When Gates dropped out from Harvard University, he joined Allen in Honeywell.
During this time, Allen showed Gates an article on a mini computer kit by Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS). Later on, they contacted MITS and told them that they were working on a BASIC software program that could run the computer. MITS was interested, so Allen and Gates spent two months finishing the program. MITS accepted it and Allen and Gates formed a partnership called Micro-soft. Later on, they got rid of the hyphen and called it Microsoft.
After a while of working for MITS, Gates noticed that only 10 percent of people that are using the BASIC software program paid for it. The program was being pirated. He sent a letter out saying that developers would not spend so much time and money on quality software if people keep pirating it and not paying for it. The computer business was rapidly transforming at this time, and so was Bill Gates. He saw the real profitable side of computers was not their hardware. Rather it was the software end of the business. Good software is what makes a computer exciting and easy to use. Bill Gates grabbed this concept and ran with it. The result: As of 1993 AGates was personally worth more than $2 billion@, and his company, Microsoft, was Avalued at more than $7 billion.@(Manes, 2)
After reading the January 1, 1975 issue of Popular Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800, Bill Gates called the creators of the new microcomputer, MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems), offering to demonstrate an implementation of the BASIC programming language for the system.[22] Gates had neither an interpreter nor an Altair system, yet in the eight weeks before the demo he and Allen developed the interpreter.
