Gandalf represents the use of power for good. Gandalf does everything to help Middle Earth, but while he is doing it for the greater good, Gandalf still uses his powers for control in many instances. In the scene when Bilbo is trying to give the ring away, he struggles, and Gandalf starts to influence Bilbo by first using their relationship against Bilbo, saying that Bilbo “owes [him] something” after all these years of friendship (33) and for Bilbo to “do as [he] promised” (33). When Bilbo continues to resist, Gandalf says that “it will be his turn to get angry soon” (33) with the text describing that Gandalf “grew tall and menacing” (33). While Gandalf has not held down and forced Bilbo to give up the Ring, he is still influencing and controlling
It’s not just the ring that gives him power, it is his overwhelming strength and courage he possesses. He defies all odds and takes on a daunting evil force with nothing but an army of dwarfs, a tiny sword, and a ring of invisibility. Many believed such a small, feeble creature could not do such a task, but throughout his quest he had companions that tested his boundaries and unlocked his power. The courage and leadership he took on brought him from the Shire, to the land of the elves, to the land of mortals, and to the land of the dwarfs. He fought ogres, trolls, goblins, and a dragon with just his courage and wits. The power he had was unmatched throughout the whole story, even when the strongest of the strong and the biggest of the big faced against him, Bilbo still prevailed victor. He didn’t use his size or strength to fight, he used his own unique abilities to fight. The power he weld was not with a sword or magic, but with his wits and courage. This is the most important lesson Tolkien wanted the reader to learn, whenever you are up against hardship courage and wits prevail against brute strength and
Although hard at times Bilbo still perseveres, but with help along the way. Gandalf was Bilbo’s mentor or supernatural helper. Gandalf guides Bilbo along his journey and helps him in any way he can like when Gandalf helped Bilbo defeat the trolls. After the sun turns the trolls into stone the dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo raided the trolls cave and found Sting(as well as Glamdring and Orcrist). Sting is Bilbo’s sword that was made by elves long ago.
Conflict; the struggle between opposing forces. In the book” the hobbit” the protagonist named Bilbo conveys a struggle between his personality. His mother, born into the took family has always had an extreme thirst for adventure. Although his father was born into the Baggins family, which life consist of normal hobbit behavior. Bilbo is torn between following his adventurous pursuits or continuing to live a typical hobbit life.
The thing that would be more important at this point in the book would be either strength or intelligence. The thing that would be most important right now for Bilbo would be intelligence the reason why intelligence would be important is because it would help Bilbo and the others get through the evil they would have to face. One of the evils they have to face is a dragon and the other evil they have to face is evil wolves. The other reason I would choose intelligence is because he would be smart, brave and fearless.
In every story, there is always a beginning. The story of the ring began when “Bilbo was lost for a while in the black orc-mines deep under the mountains, and there, as he groped in vain in the dark, he put his hand on a ring, lying on the floor of a tunnel.” (Tolkien II) While Bilbo was trying to find the way out, he met Gollum, who was once a hobbit-kind of creature. “Gollum challenged Bilbo to riddle-game, saying that if he asked a riddle which Bilbo could not guess, then he would kill him and eat him; but if Bilbo defeated him, then he would do as Bilbo wished: he would lead him to a way out of the tunnels.” (Tolkien II) Later, Bilbo won the game and escaped from the tunnel by the help of the power of the ring. From there, the story of
In this paragraph we will be talking about who Gandalf is, how strong Gandalf is, and what side Gandalf if fighting for. Gandalf is an angelic being who used to live in the Undying Lands of Valinor where the elves called him Olodrin. When Gandalf first came to Middle-Earth he was part of a group of five Istari but only three stayed to help Middle-Earth. When Gandalf befriended the lord of the elves, Cirdan, he was bestowed with the Elven Ring of Fire, one of the 20 rings of power, that was called Narya. There are other people with rings of power, including Gandalf, but in the fight against Sauron the ring's powers can’t be used to directly attack Sauron. With the powers of Narya, the Elven Ring of Fire, Gandalf has enhanced powers of
J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel, The Hobbit, explains how the good, the evil, and the humans affect with society today. This is because of important virtues and vices that define people. For example, a good person has traits of love, courage, and respect towards humanity while a bad person has traits of hatred, violence, and malevolence against humanity. A good person symbolizes an innocent nature where people care for others, speak kindly to people, and can be trusted in tough situations. However, a bad person walks in an evil nature which the enemy harms people with violence, speaks violently against people, and makes deceitful plots against people.
In J.R.R Tolkien’s fantasy novel “The Hobbit”, Bilbo Baggins likes to keep to himself, safe and sound in his cozy home, until Gandalf pushes him to go on an adventure with the dwarves. Bilbo is very insecure about himself, and is very uncomfortable-but Gandalf sees potential in Bilbo that Bilbo himself cannot. Like Gandalf pushed Bilbo, it is important to have a “Gandal” in our lives. It is important to have a “Gandalf”, because they push us to our full potential, they believe in us, and they help us to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. If Gandalf had not seen potential in Bilbo, then he would have never pushed and encouraged him to go on the adventure.
An Unlikely Hero When people think of a hero or heroic traits they think of someone who is tall, strapping, courageous and handsome. They tend not to think of some like Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, who desires nothing more than to stay put in the comfort of his hobbit hole. J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit challenges this stereotype by taking Bilbo out of his comfort zone and onto a quest like none other. Heroism would not be a trait attributed to Mr. Baggins, but over the course of his journey he abandons his hesitant nature and demonstrates how he can be a hero. After losing Bilbo in the tunnels the dwarves are upset that he even came along, but Bilbo, invisible, says, “And here’s the burglar!”
By putting his life in danger Bilbo shows a true example of heroism. Though the dwarves were still skeptical of his abilities, they were starting to take into consideration of what Gandalf had said about this little hobbit. Continuing their adventure the group is attacked by goblins where they are eventually saved by Gandalf. Throughout the turmoil of the attacking goblins Bilbo gets lost in the caves and finds himself alone in the darkness. It is in this event when Bilbo finds Gollum’s ring. Gollum was a sickly looking creature that had been dwelling in the caves for many years. Bilbo used his wits to outsmart the creature by playing a riddle game with him and eventually made it to safety. Having Bilbo win the riddle game shows that his smart and witty mind aids him in becoming the hero. Bilbo wasn’t some tough strong stereotypical super hero, he used his smarts to outwit his foes and to triumph over evil. Though Bilbo at the time did not know the power of the ring that he had retrieved from Gollum’s lair (the power of invisibility), it was his heroic fate that he found it as it assist him in becoming the hero of the story. Fate has it that Bilbo will become a hero, but Bilbo also has the courage on top of his fate to get the dwarves out of life threatening situations.
Knowledge is Power The quintessential well-rounded life is one full of knowledge, as a life laden with knowledge is a life with direction, and power. This concept is not only present in the real world, but also in literature. J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit especially reflects this idea, for without the guidance of knowledge, it is unlikely that Bilbo and the group would have ever left Bag End.
Gandalf is wise and intelligent, and he shows that whenever he encounters a . He has the ability of reading peoples insight; he can analyze their character and sculpt to the best of what it can be. This makes him invulnerable to all the lies he hears from his enemies, makinghim choose the right path. One of his choices was when he assigned Bilbo to Thorin’s as an ally and an assistant, since Gandalf believes that Bilbo has trustworthy and bright minded; he didn't someone else knowing that there may be risks.
Applying modern theoretical lenses to historic works can lead to an alternate understanding of a text - perhaps one the author did not intend. Novels, like George Orwell’s 1984, can be analyzed through multiple lenses. The strongest analysis, however, can be conducted through the lenses of Marxism and psychoanalysis. Through these complementary lenses, readers gain an understanding of social constructs (Marxism) and the effects of these constructs on human behavior (psychoanalysis). Relating these lenses, then, to the life of Orwell’s Winston Smith, readers can assess his place in society and understand how his role in the re-writing of history affected his life.
The Vietnam War raged on from 1954-1975, taking over three million lives with it. Conflicts rooted in the cold war resulted in the United States sending troops to defend South Vietnamese democracy. However as the war became more lengthy and expensive, many civilians began to protest the United States participating in the war, creating the Antiwar Movement. Though the movement had lasting effects on society, it did not immediately cause the United States to retreat from Vietnam. The antiwar movement of the 1960’s, which is deeply connected with the transcendentalist belief of Civil Disobedience, protested the involvement of the United States in the infamous Vietnam War, and has had numerous effects on the American Military and Government to this day. However, the movement that strived for peace did not completely accomplish its goal of ending the United States’ involvement in international armed conflict.
This quote show what Thorin thinks of Bilbo and his role in the group. He is doubting his abilities and thinking he would only come in the way of their plan to steal the treasure from Smaug the dragon who is guarding it at misty mountains. Gandalf who lead them to Bilbos house and took his side which got the dwarves to agree on adding him to the group as the 14th member. This quote show that tomorrow they will be starting on their journey.
