After attending the “Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Ecosystem Sustainability Conference,” I learned about the ecological issues that Native Americans faced when individuals outside of their community appropriated land towards other means of production. Similarly, the speaker Delphine Jackson had discussed how her community was being disturbed by the construction of dams and highways, which destroyed the environment where animals lived and thrived. Additionally, the speaker Valeria A. Small explained the issues of their culture being impeded by an invasive plant that was established by non-native people. Getting their voices heard was not an easy task, for many of the people who created the newly developed roads and embedded the invasive plant species were seeing reality differently than the natives in the sense that the land was meant to be used

As president of the Theta Theta chapter of PTK, my role called for the need to work in cooperation with the City Of Laredo Environmental Services Department. Meetings and paperwork were necessary for me to receive permission to work, as an organization, on the courtyard of the public library. I contacted several 4-H groups and other organizations, such as the TACHE, to have more community involvement in the project. As for project action, our first step was to remove all weeds from the ground and later turn the ground in order to enrich the soil. Specific plants were also planted in order to attract monarch butterflies; however, milkweed was also necessary to plant since this weed is crucial for monarchs to lay their eggs. Although our

On May 15, 2016 me and around 20 other University of Washington students volunteered to remove invasive plants from Yesler Swamp. We started the day by meeting in front of the Yesler Swamp trial sign. After that, our guides started to introduce themselves there was three of them. Then, started walking on the trail to reach our designated spot that we are going to on. While we were walking Carolyn, one of the guides, started explaining what we are going to do. She started inform us about the different type of plants and which ones we should take out, invasive plants, and which we should leave, native plants.

In our Change Project, we collected a sufficient amount of data and learned information on a endangered species, the Ridgway’s Rail. This environmental issue is not very well-known, which explains the lack of help and volunteering. In this service project, our Change group went to Don Edward and help improved the habit of Ridgway’s Rail. Throughout this project, we tried to spread awareness about endangered species and find ways we can enhance their surroundings. My Change group used this opportunity to not only help prevent the extinction of Ridgway’s Rails, but also to help other species that are living in the same habitat. In order to help the Rails, we tried to figure out the reason behind the destruction of the marsh. Through an experienced volunteer, June Smith, we learned that invasive plants are the culprit of the extinction of the Ridgway’s Rails.

I am going to be going to attend Big Morongo Canyon Preserve to volunteer a day on September 30th. I am a 10th grade student that is currently going to Yucca Valley High School. First task I need to do is receive permission from my guardians to go to the preserve. I have discussed with my parents today September, 12 what I am doing and they are one hundred percent on board. My parents are willing to be my transportation there and back.

I agree with Anderson’s idea of making use of restoration techniques used by California natives because it focuses on conservation through action rather than a “hands off” approach. The California native techniques may be useful because it can help caretakers actively participate in restoration of flora and fauna while learning about their habitat and what makes them flourish. The natives were also concerned with “a sense of respect which consequently promoted habitat heterogeneity, increased biodiversity, and a well maintained vegetation system” (Anderson 2005). If caretakers can take native management techniques and combine it with their background of sciences concerning the natural world they can come up with a whole new technique of restoration

With help from the Wildlife Preservation the design aspects of my engineering design team will be able to implement a design that shows how the species will be protected and precautionary manners that will be taken if the plan fails. Public representation is a must-have for this project because you don’t want to seem as angry people who are mainly trying to use the government money for the wrong reason. This is not what I support. I want to be able to research these flowers and understand how they evolve and how there adaptions help them maintain their environment. Many citizens don’t know about the endangered species or think that only animals have the ability to be endangered. I want to change that viewpoint even if I have to jump over hurdles to get through it. My team and I are ready to make that decisions even if we have to jump over milestones to get our message

“invasion of non-native plant species” (Diversity and Distributions, 2004). This can be extremely harmful to the native plants and can cause serious damage in the long run. There are precautions that can be taken, but there’s only so much people can do to protect it. Naturally, other plants are going to pop up and try to take over. This is why it’s important to keep watch over stuff like this to minimize the damage the new plants will do. Preservation of the park is a number one priority, so for future generations they’ll also be able to witness the beauty of the park. It can be hard to try and protect it from dangers like this, but with effort and being cautious, it’s very possible. People can do a lot of damage to the earth without even realizing it. There’s plenty of warnings and posters spread throughout Yosemite reminding everybody to be respectful of nature and everything else. Doing little things, like not littering, really makes a difference in maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of the park. On September 30th, I will go the Morongo Canyon Preserve. September 30th is National Public Lands Day. My entire process will include five steps all completed by September 30th. My first step is planning. Not only will I need transportation -my second step- but I will also need to call the preserve. Since I have already done that, I’ve gotten more information. My third step is safety. I plan to volunteer on September 30th at the preserve and they will provide me with gloves, tools, water, etc. My fourth step is the actual volunteer work. This is my main step, and the most important. I plan to volunteer from 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. My fifth and final step is once again transportation. This is my last step because when my volunteering is over

Biodiversity boots ecosystem productivity where every little species plays an important role in maintaining a healthy community. Maintaining a viable habitat requires lots of efforts, determination and frequency. Invasive plants are a major threat to our natural environment. These invasions change the natural diversity and balance of ecological communities. They threaten the survival of many plants and animals. They are excellent at surviving and reproducing which out-compete the native plants. Understanding these huge consequences let us understand why volunteer activities like this are so helpful and needed. They play a huge part in contributing to our environment in many positive ways. Removing these invasive plants are helping a lot in restoring the habitat and giving native plants greater chance for survival. Humans are faced with the issues caused by invasive species and must make a decision. What should we do? Should we step in and rid the ecosystems of these harmful species? Or should we let nature solve its own problem? I believe humans must take action in stopping these invasive plants from destroying ecosystems, attracting more invasive animals, and harming the native wildlife.

Noxious weeds affect many things: Farmers, ranchers, consumers, tourists, animals, and environments. More specifically, noxious weeds affect anything. The weeds can damage a crop to the point that the farmer is unable to sell any of it. Livestock can be harmed negatively either through nutritional defects or physical attacks by these weeds. Consumers of products may increase in demand, but noxious weeds can lower the supply causing economic imbalance. Fans of state parks and public land are losing the beautiful lands that once existed due to the tyranny of noxious weeds. By understanding the affect noxious weeds have on one’s life, better management processes will be developed and put to work. Each individual can do their part by becoming educated in noxious weeds, even if it is a basic knowledge.
