Martin Luther King JR once said “It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one destiny, affects all indirectly.” The future is uncertain and the career path might shift, however, currently I am thinking about getting an economics degree. With an economics degree I am working closely with factors of production, distribution, consumption of goods and services and other money related matter. With a degree, I can get a job that can vary from products to services, and it can be in private or public sectors. One private sector job is Big Data Analyst offered by PowerAdvocate. The company helps other companies increase profit, manage suppliers and optimize business efficiency. The primary clients for the company are associated with power generation, transmission and distribution, and oil and gas. Despite the fact that PowerAdvocate is working in the financial side of the market, it is still part of the energy sector. Although the clients are not given, energy companies have one of the worst ratings. Based on Business Insiders written in 2009, 13 out of 15 companies are energy based. In addition, a news story called “The Environment's Worst Enemy? Energy Companies AND Environmentalists” states that “energy companies resisting even modest carbon management schemes to reduce emissions” (David McLaughlin, 11/24/13). Macroeconomic principles come into play when the whole market or more outside factors are involved. Examples of this in the video game industry, which I work in, would be when the rating system for games are under scrutiny, or when a new console is put on the market as competition. These outside factors affect not only the company I work for, but every other company in the industry, from the hardware manufacturers such as Microsoft and Sony, but also the game studios such as Activision, EA and Rockstar Games. Microeconomic principles are caused by and effect only my company in particular, such

In 2014, Hewlett Packard’s (HP’s) headquarters in Palo Alto, California partnered with SolarCity, a clean renewable energy solar provider, to outfit their headquarters with over 4,000 solar panels (Canales, 2014, para. 1). HP, a 75-year plus veteran of international technologies, understands the importance of creating and investing in sustainable solutions throughout its value chain. HP states: “We set bold targets to lead the IT sector. We are committed to sourcing 50% renewable electricity for our operations by 2025 and reducing operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25% compared to 2015,” (“Living Progress,” 2017, para. 5). This commitment is not limited by HP to their products and services, but extends to, literally, their work environment. A small, but significant step to demonstrating this belief, is their project of installing solar panels over the heads of their top decision makers. “… [The] 1 megawatt system… is expected to offset more than 20 percent of HP’s current power usage onsite… [the] installation is expected to help HP reduce its utility power costs by approximately one million dollars over the next two decades,” (Canales, 2014, para. 1). To a company that earned a net income of 3.1 million in 2016 (“Cash Flow,” 2017) one

Meanwhile, leading officials and shareholders have been attempting to push against Exxon’s misleading statements, and two Harvard researchers have recently proven that Exxon was deliberately attempting to deceive the public with the wording of their advertising and public statements. They say that while Exxon Mobil has attempted to frame itself in a positive light by contributing to climate change research, they are ultimately causing the worst kind of damage by continuing to publicly promote unscientific thinking which could negatively sway future policy making in the United States and other countries. The beliefs held by the people working against Exxon Mobil are essentially environmentalist, if more about wise use than deep ecology- they believe that the public, in particular shareholders, have a right to know about the ethics of what they might be investing in so they might choose more environmentally sound options when it’s logical and beneficial both for themselves and the

Our planet faces serious problems, ranging from high emission rates, to extreme waste, we are using the equivalent of approximately 1.6 planets to provide us the resources we require to produce and absorb our waste (“World’). The result of this radical overuse of resources is less forest cover, global warming, air pollution, depletion of fresh water and the overall buildup of pollutants. "Nearly two-thirds, 63%, of all industrial carbon dioxide and methane released into the atmosphere since 1854 can be traced to fossil fuel and cement production by just 90 entities" (‘Largest Producers”). All 90 of those entities are big businesses with even bigger data. Many companies have started using big
