Big Brother is Watching
When George Orwell wrote "1984", he wrote about a world where not only the words you spoke, but also your movements and even your facial expressions could be monitored. You weren't safe in the streets, work or even your own apartment. Does this sound familiar? Big brother IS watching you. The question now is what this information will be used for.
In this essay I will argue that the Internet of Things (IoT) will be the downfall of our privacy. Internet of things is the anticipated future! A future where everyone has dozens of very small, very low-power devices with CPUs, sensors and radios. This leaves room for a lot of interesting work to be done, but nobody seems to have asked the question "Do we really want an Internet of

While IoT devices holds much promise, there are still many security issues that need to be addressed. These security issues can have a significant impact on everyday life, such as causing damage, disruption to business operations, and in some cases even loss of life. Having all your devices interconnected using IoT such as lighting, thermostats, doors, and elevators, seems convenient but in fact this poses a great security risk. If these risks are exploited it could disrupt power or lighting which could lead to a loss of life if it were something like a hospital. Addressing these security risks will lead to more efficient and safer to use IoT devices but companies will have to identify them in their devices first (Tankard, 2015).
George Orwell's fantasy novel “1984” predicts the future in terms “Big Brother” is watching you!” His book, “1984”, was considered a visionary and futuristic novel that presents itself in an imminent society. Many people believe that a society like the one in 1984 is authentically impossible. However, the world has transformed over the years and become more controlled by the regime which is precisely what was transpiring in the book. With big brother overlooking us, and vast advertisements all over our technology that has influenced our society, and the crazy surveillance technology that is implemented into our everyday lives, a society like 1984 is not far from impossible. Our present world is commencing to become 1984 by our world control, mass surveillance, and propaganda
Many Americans do not realize that at any time of the day the government could be observing their “private” lives. On the other hand, some individuals have predicted the government would develop a form of constant surveillance, like George Orwell who forecasted a futuristic government, which used technology as a relentless eye on the members of the society in the novel 1984. 1984 was correct, to an extent, in predicting that the government would increase their usage of technology to constantly observe their people, whether in public or their private homes.
Everyone has always wondered if people were ever watching them. Our technology today is capable to eavesdrop in on anyone’s conversations even if their phones are turned off. In the novel, “1984”, the party INGSOC uses telescreens to watch over the people and always know what they are up to. This denies the people’s rights and privileges to go about their business as they please. The technology we have today is almost exact to what big brother uses in George Orwell’s novel by taking over the public and private parts of our lives.
“Big Brother is watching you” – the haunting phrase remains relevant today; however, it is modified to our society as “The government is watching you.” George Orwell’s impactful 1984 novel greatly emphasizes a dystopian civilization, in which a totalitarian government has complete control over every citizen. The novel, written in 1949, reveals profound political awareness for future generations to not impose such oppressive objectives. The society of 1984 reflects many similarities to our society today in the United States such as mass surveillance, enemy-changing wars, and the influence of the press and media.
Orwell’s 1984, paints the picture of a society that is gripped strictly in the hand of a totalitarian government. In this world, the government utilizes a complex surveillance system, known as “Big Brother”, to monitor the everyday activities of citizens. The cameras
Attention Getter: As the George Orwell writes in his book 1984, “Big Brother is watching you.”
In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, the main character Winston along with several others are under constant surveillance by the government also known as Big Brother. The use of technology plays a major role in the government's control of the citizens in the society. There should be a system put in place in order to avoid a totalitarian government from having dominating control. In 1984 there are parallels with the world we currently live in today when it comes to the government watching its citizens and monitoring what they do and who they do it with.
The foreshadowing between the world today and 1984 is prevalent on surveillance. The monitoring that is depicted in todays news, shows the population an insight of the capabilities people have in surveilling an individual. Although in George Orwell’s novel ‘1984’ it takes surveillance to an extreme, there are correlations between our world and the dystopia described by Orwell. It is amicable to compare ‘1984’ to our world today, from recent revelations revealing the ‘truth’ behind our current government.
The novel "1984", by George Orwell, is based on the assumption of “Big Brother” and how he is watching everyone. In the book, he shows a dystopian world where there is no freedom and citizens are constantly being indoctrinated. To accomplish this, the politicians in “1984” suppress people’s thinking and take away their freedom by creating fear through propaganda, strict laws, and regular surveillances.
“Big Brother is Watching,”(2). This quote is a famous line in George Orwell’s novel 1984, that is one of the main factors that allows readers to classify this novel as a science fiction novel, including the ideology of mindless humans. 1984 also contains forbidden love and passion, technology that is not usually found in that time frame, and the examination of how society is run and because of this 1984 can also be considered to have sub-genres of romance and commentary and anachronism. 1984 qualifies under these sub-genres because while it may not follow the direct standards of each sub-genre it does have key exponents that fit under each in a unique way. Romance is one sub-genre that some people may not consider 1984 to include, however
1984, a novel by George Orwell, represents a dystopian society in which the people of Oceania are surveilled by the government almost all the time and have no freedoms. Today, citizens of the United States and other countries are watched in a similar way. Though different technological and personal ways of keeping watch on society than 1984, today’s government is also able to monitor most aspects of the people’s life. 1984 might be a dystopian society, but today’s condition seems to be moving towards that controlling state, where the citizens are surveilled by the government at all times.
Section 3 will show many different examples about how many different businesses are using the Internet of Things to improve their business and provide the specifics in which they are using the devices. An example of a company that will be used in this section is Tesla. Tesla uses the Internet of Things to have their vehicles drive by themselves automatically. Tesla has many other examples of using the Internet of Things to help their business and the rest of them will be covered in that section. This section goes in depth to five different companies and explain how they have used the Internet of Things to their advantage. The five companies mentioned are Tesla, IBM, SAP, Facebook, and Comcast. Facebook has been looking into making a couple of new devices that could rival companies such as Amazon and Google with the way they plan on implementing the Internet of Things. The specifics of those devices will be analyzed more in depth in section
Imagine a world, where everything you do, say or even think is monitored. A world where everyone is being monitored 24 hours per day and seven days a week. A world where the inner circle of the government is being represented by one picture, picture of a man, The Big Brother. Welcome to 1984 by George Orwell.
The concept of the internet of things abbreviated as IoT was introduced as early as the late 90’s by Kevin Ashton, the Executive Director of Auto-ID Labs and a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Now, “the Internet of things is already a disruptive technology capable of determining fundamental changes that are happening in everyday life, and it is considered the fourth industrial revolution.” (Hucanu) The Internet of Things (IoT)
