9. Immigrants choose to migrate to the United States for many reasons such as poverty or blight. Some of these immigrants were forced out of their homes while others simply felt attracted to America for its ideas and freedoms. However, not all immigrants were welcomed like the Irish who held no crafting skills or any skill at all.

The United States is a nation built on a strong foundation of immigrants. People have come to America from many parts of the world, for a variety of reasons. Some have been pushed out of their homeland because of poverty and oppresion. Others have been pulled towards a new life in America, due to opportunities to improve their future. In 1840-1950 Swedish Immigrants were pushed out of their country or wanted to leave because of the way things were there.

There are also other reasons for immigrants coming to the United States such as reunification. Immigration to America is often a decision made in order to discover a better life for a family or individual. America’s founding ideals are usually what compel foreigners to move to the US. The stories of America being the “Land of Opportunity” have continued to persuade people to immigrate. Although immigration in the 20th century is much different from recent immigration, the underlying reasons for moving to the US are usually quite similar.

It is important to understand “cultural accessibility” which includes “understanding, appreciation, and affirmation of values and beliefs that are held by the communit (Delgado, 1999, p. 34). Nonverbal communication is also an aspect of cultural associability due to the communication to the client in a way they understand (Delgado, 1999,). This is an important aspect because it allows the social worker to be available to learn from the client in order to build competence at the time of face-to-face contact. The United States is known for the freedom of speech and economic opportunities. The biggest reason why such a large number of immigrants settle in America each year due to the poverty in their own country. Due to the poor salaries and wages, the workers prefer to relocate so they offer a better lifestyle for their families.

It is imperative that social workers become knowledgeable about their clients’ cultures and are culturally sensitive. In learning about their clients’ cultures, social workers need to be aware of how powerful and significant culture is in relating to clients’ behavior, values, and beliefs. Becoming culturally competent requires the ability to integrate awareness, knowledge, and skills while maintaining a positive working relationship with the client (Sue and Zane, 1987).
