What is an anxiety disorder?
As a Year 12 student in today’s society, anxiety disorders are notably problematic and an increasing issue. Anxiety is a crippling feeling of apprehensiveness and powerlessness; sometimes there is a sense of impending danger. Anxiety can interfere with an individual’s ability to carry out or take pleasure in certain aspects of their life. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorder in Australia.
Almost one in seven people will experience some type of anxiety disorder in a year. One in four people will experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives (Australian Bureau of Statistics (2008)). Right

The following is a statement of their purpose ‘beyondblue takes a public health approach, which focuses on improving the health of the whole population, across the whole lifespan. We tailor approaches when working with specific population groups, and we work in a range of settings – including educational settings, workplaces, health services and online – in order to be accessible to as many people as possible.’ [1]
beyondblue was established in October 2000, the purpose of creating this community was a response of depression. It wanted to provide services and information for people with depression and anxiety disorders. Back in 2000 there were limited countries that had attempted a national response to depression; other national programs aimed at changing attitudes to mental health were met with limited success. [2]

According to beyondblue, LGBTI people are at least two to three times more likely to experience depression and anxiety than the wider community. Identifying opportunities is the first step of advocacy (Rapp, 2012), as these opportunities may present beneficial changes for the individual suffering from mental health issues. There needs to be an advocacy to change the mental health system to better suit the needs of modern society, and especially the youth. The development of mental services on an online platform is already a big step towards making positive changes, however that only tackles the issue of accessibility. The practicum project conducted for CONR 643P_B included an internship for 7 Cups of Tea (7COT), an online support service for individuals in need of social, mental and emotional support. Services were provided through the process of active and reflective listening in an anonymous computer-mediated setting. On the 7 Cups of Tea website, active listening provides a podium for providing support, fashioning a community and instituting a network of constituents dedicated to destigmatizing mental health and providing unbiased support to anyone in need.

For instance, one begins to undergo a feeling of failure regarding specific class. Nevertheless, sometimes, the emotion, keeps us motivated and school work-orientated. Yet, now and then, anxiety can take a hold on one when intense fear and distress becomes too overwhelming; it can prevent one from doing everyday thing. As a result, anxiety disorder can be the cause (B. T. Anxiety Disorders, 2016). According to National Alliance of Mental Illness, known as NAMI (2016), anxiety disorders are a common mental health concern in the United States. Roughly, forty million adults in the United States, and eight percent of children and teenagers face some sort of a negative impact of an anxiety disorder. Consequently, people develop symptoms of anxiety disorder before the age twenty-one.

Two separate programs are also run, one for early childhood and primary school students called, ‘KidsMatter’ and the other a secondary school students program called, ‘MindsMatter’. These programs aim to identify personal support networks within an individual’s immediate environment i.e. home or at school. Beyondblue also strives to create supportive environments within the workplace through the ‘Heads up’ program4. This program involves targets sociocultural and political factors that aggravate depression. For example, beyondblue place significant identification of emergency first responders, by specifically releasing a ‘Good practice framework for Mental Health and wellbeing in the first responder’s organisation’5. This framework aims to improve the mental health of first responders such as police, ambulance, fire and SES workers by suggesting measures which can be undertaken by senior officers or individuals to protect employees and their own health in hence reduce suicide amongst these professions.
