The health and well-being of our nation’s young people is not a matter of luck. It is not a chance or random event. It must be a planned outcome. The case for well-designed, well-resourced, and sustained health education in the nation’s schools is compelling.
Health education builds students' knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes about health. Health education teaches about physical, mental, emotional and social health. Through health education students are motivated to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky behaviors.
Health education curricula and instruction help students learn skills they will use to make healthy choices throughout their lifetime. Positive changes in behavior that lower student risks are a by-product of effective curricula. …show more content…

The objective of a revised elementary health curriculum is based on the vision that the knowledge and skills acquired in the program will benefit students throughout their lives and help them to thrive in an ever-changing world. Students will acquire physical and health literacy, and develop the comprehension, capacity, and commitment needed to lead healthy, active lives and to promote the benefits of healthy, active living. Helping students to build physical literacy (the ability to move with competence in a variety of physical activities) and health literacy (the skills needed to find, understand and use information to make good decisions for health) is key to the curriculum but, more simply put, curriculum is about helping students develop the skills needed to make healthy
