Beowulf had 3 fights with different monsters : The Battle with Grendel, The Battle with Grendel’s Mother, and The Battle with the Dagon. In each fight, he used different weapons, methods, and techniques. He was rewarded with different trophies in each fight and was given more respect from his people.
Grendel was a descendent of Cain, murderous creature banished by God. He haunted the moors, the marshes, and made his home in a hell not hell but earth. Beowulf went into battle with no shield or weapons. He used his hands to rip Grendel’s arm off. Beowulf let Grendel escape knowing he wouldn’t survive from the mortal wound. Grendel died in his lair. Beowulf’s trophy was Grendel’s arm that was hung in the mead hall.
Grendel’s mother was a monster
First, Grendel is an angry demon who has been attacking Hrothgar’s Kingdom and hurting the villagers for twelve years. Some people refer Grendel as, “Grim demon”. Beowulf is informed about Grendel destroying the kingdom and hurting innocent people. One night Grendel had struck Beowulf’s men with his brutal strength. After Grendel slaughtered all the men, Beowulf walked up to Grendel tried to grab, but Beowulf grabbed Grendel’s arm and held onto him with a firm grip. Grendel was trying his best to escape Beowulf because of his brute strength. For example, “you could hear Grendel’s claws cracking.” Beowulf through Grendel’s urge to rip Grendel’s whole arm and part of his chest off. Beowulf watched as Grendel died slowly from the amount of blood loss.
Beowulf is a warrior more by reputation than what he actually does throughout the duration of the text. Although he defeats Grendel fairly quickly after being introduced to us, and after that Grendel’s mother, fifty years pass without much detail of Beowulf’s triumphs.
Grendel to gnaw the broken bones of his last human supper. The monster’s flight, fastened those claws in his fists till they cracked clutched Grendels closer. Screams of the almighty’s enemy sang in darkness. The tears torn out of Grendel’s and defeat.
The battles scenes are similar in that they all add to the progression of Beowulf’s complex character. In the fight with Grendel it seems as if he has this godlike power when he goes after Grendel. “The captain of evil discovered himself in a handgrip harder than anything he had ever encountered in any man on the face of the earth,” (lines 750-2). When battling Grendel’s mother however he seems weaker because he needed a weapon to kill her. He had said earlier that he “… placed complete trust in his strength of limb and the Lord’s favor,” (lines 669-670). It indicates that Beowulf isn’t as immortal as everyone thinks he is. In the last battle, against the dragon, Beowulf is dressed in full armor and brings a small army with him implying that his enemy is stronger than any others he has faced before. “… I shall be meeting molten venom in the fire he breathes, so I go forth in mail-shirt and shield,” (lines 2522-24). These battles provide Beowulf with huge responsibilities, each getting bigger. Each showing that his mortal being can’t win against the most immortal being. Heroes can have their moments, but in the end they can’t win all the
Beowulf was in several different battles using many techniques to come out victorious against his opponents. Throughout the story Beowulf has 3 major fights with 3 different monsters and encounter with a king. He’s a strong warrior even in the face of danger he stands tall and doesn’t back down. Beowulf deals with a king named Hrothgar and his henchmen which either he wounded or killed his men. Quote from page 51 “Killing as often as he could come alone bloodthirsty and horrible”.
In his three major battles, Beowulf fights for many different reasons. His motivation varies, and as he grows older and wiser his attitude toward these battles also changes. Throughout the epic, Beowulf bradoshously beats Grendel, then more methodically murders Grendel’s mother, and with his last breathes humbly hollers for help to slay the dragon. This shows that Beowulf’s early focuses of glory and riches changes as he becomes a weathered warrior acknowledges that he cannot defeat his enemies alone and must utilize the resources provided to him such as armor, magical items, and companions.
In the story Beowulf, Beowulf the hero of the story had to battle with monsters and in the three battles had was a part of he had different methods and techniques, and weapons to beating the monsters and they are Beowulf’s strength and hands against Grendel, Beowulf’s will and sword against Grendel’s mother, and Beowulf’s sword, shield, Beowulf’s determination, and Beowulf’s bravery against the dragon at the end of the story. To start off the battle with grendel. Beowulf used his smarts to know that grendel would see all of the warriors and try to attack and kill all of them one of Beowulf’s men died but he was the next one that was pick and as soon as Grendel picked him up Beowulf woke up from his fake sleep the is a method that got Grendel
No one before him was able to give them that sense of confidence. Beowulf rips Grendel ’s arm out of the socket and returns with it to the mead hall as a trophy for everyone to see. The average man would not have been able to defeat Grendel. Grendel had been attacking Heorot for years and Beowulf was the only one brave enough to face him.
The first battle was his hand to hand battle with Grendel at the Mead Hall after playing the music to lour grendel to where he would kill him. This is where intelligence and supernatural strength comes into play. Beowulf knew the only way to get Grendel to attack was to play loud music. He was a fair warrior and decided to not use a weapon when he became aware that gGrendel didn't have a weapon, so that the fight would be fair and even match. Beowulf was the only man on the island that had the will strength and will to fight grendel with his bare hands. When gGrendel arrived, Beowulf watched one of his men die. After seeing this Beowulf attacked gGrendel and with his super strength he managed to rip off grendel’s arm and use it as a trophy to be be honored for his bravery and success. A trophy was very important in the Anglo-Saxon period, it was something that was taken during war and kept as a momento. When gGrendel is killed, gGrendel’s mother comes for revenge for her son’s killing and killed more of the king’s people over night. Beowulf keeps his word about protecting the people as a true hero would and swims through the lake to gGrendel’s mother's underwater lair and evades her home with intentions of killing her with a sword. For in return of Beowulf’s sacrifice and bravery he is given the king’s position of the island and is honored for years by his people. Only a true Anglo-saxon hero would
One of the major fights that make Beowulf an epic hero is the fight with Grendel. Grendel is a monster spawned out of slime. He terrorizes and kills the Danes every night for 12 years with their attempt of fighting back. Beowulf hears about Grendel and decides to take matters in his own hand. He chose fifteen warriors to go and battle with him. On the way he meets a king named Hrothgar. Beowulf introduces himself and they go to the hall to meet the other warriors. During the night, Beowulf stays up and waits for Grendel to come out. Grendel comes out and kills a male then Beowulf wrestles him and puts up a good fight. Grendel notices Beowulf strength and starts to panic. “Grendel knew at once that nowhere on earth Had he met a man whose hands were harder; His mind was flooded with fear- but nothing could take his talons and himself from that tight Hard grip.” ("Beowulf." : A
The story of Beowulf is one of a great hero. Beowulf is a very generous person who is always willing to help out when people are in need. Over the course of the story, Beowulf ends up in three major battles: the battle with Grendel, with Grendel’s mother, and with the dragon. All of these battles were different in their style and the way Beowulf approached them was different. Beowulf also had different reasons to participate in each of the battles.
In the fictional epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf is a hero that can defeat any monsters and he saves towns from their wraths. Although the battles between Beowulf and the various monsters may seem clear cut as good versus evil, Beowulf has a mix of both humble and selfish intentions behind each battle. In each of the three battles in the book, Beowulf does something to create a more difficult battle for himself to appear stronger and better. Against Grendel, Beowulf restricted himself from using weapons because when he would win, he would look that much better. When Grendel’s mother fought Beowulf, he kept his men from helping him and fought the beast himself. Against the dragon in his final battle, he used weapons and the help of his men and quantified it because he was older than he was against Grendel. Beowulf set the bar too high and each battle after the first made him seem weaker and weaker. But in each battle, Beowulf challenges himself unnecessarily to appear as a better warrior.
The poem Beowulf includes three battles where Beowulf has to defeat the monsters known as Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon. Although he is successful in defeating the three monsters, his preparation for fighting them, his motivation for going into battle, and the conclusions of the battles demonstrate similarities and differences.
in a fierce struggle he rips his arm off, and Grendel flees, mortally wounded. Beowulf proudly displayed the hand "high up near the roof: the whole of Grendel's shoulder and arm, his awesome grasp" (Beowulf 334-335). The claw is a symbol of Beowulf's victory, and the fact that it is hung high means that he wants everyone to see it. Beowulf made a boast that he would destroy the monster, and the claw shows that his boast is fulfilled. Grendel's mother sees this as an offense, and retrieves her son's arm. Beowulf and his men follow here to a mere where she lives. While underwater Beowulf is captured by her and the two fight in a battle in her underwater cave, which is filled with various treasures. Beowulf defeats Grendel's mother and then finds the corpse of her son, Grendel. Beowulf proceeds to decapitate the corpse as the ultimate act of vengeance. Beowulf decides against taking the vast amounts treasure and instead takes the best prize: Glory.
Grendel's claw and head are another important symbol. After Beowulf defeats Grendel, he rips his arm off, and Grendel flees. Beowulf proudly displays the hand to show his accomplishment for defeating evil. The hand is a symbol of Beowulf's victory, and the fact that it is hung high means that he wants everyone to see it. Grendel's mother sees this as an offense, and retrieves her son's arm. Beowulf later defeats Grendel's mother and then finds the corpse of her son. Beowulf decapitates the corpse as the ultimate act of vengeance. Once again, good prevails over evil. Beowulf’s victory over Grendel and his mother shows the power of goodness can defeat the evil forces. Even though Beowulf is killed by the dragon in the end, his heroic death fulfills with courage and glory. He is selfless and sacrifices
