The epic poem Beowulf is considered the oldest long poem of Old English which survived through many years, but also one of the major works of English literature. However, the author of this great work remains unknown since it was written a long time ago, sometime between the eighth and the early eleventh century. It was first written to be told orally, and that is one of the main reasons why this poem is still known by today’s society; people in those times told the story to their tribe and it went on from generations to generations. What is interesting in this poem is that the society is idealized, which influences the people to act like those in the epic poems. One of the most important messages present in Beowulf is to make people understand that they should not fear anything, or if so, they should be able to overcome their fears. In Beowulf, the hero fights a terrifying monster, saves and protects many people even if they are not part of his tribe, which is a mark of great courage. While everyone fear the monster, Beowulf is the only one who succeeds to defeat Grendel. Also, being part of a group or a community is seen as something good in Beowulf. Indeed, when one is part of a group, this person is not alone and then, should feel secure and happier. It is written in the poem: “Where Hrothgar’s men made merry with mead/ Harp-strings would sound, and the song of the scop/ Would recount the tales told of time past.” This quote reinforces the fact that it is important to stay in a community all together. People are having fun, they drink alcohol and they tell stories, which confirms that they are happier when they are part of a group. Moreover, another thing that is important, unless good relationships within a society, is keeping good relationships with others societies.
